OFA Using Specter Of Tea Bag Shout Downs To Draw Out Health Care Reform Allies
President Obama's political outfit, Organizing for America, is now trying to entice supporters to show up at health care events in order to make sure tea party protesters are outnumbered.
Today, Vice President Joe Biden will be speaking in Michigan, and OFA wants to make sure he can. "Organized mobs across the country are intimidating lawmakers, disrupting events, and silencing discussions about the change our country needs," reads a letter from OFA's Michigan State Director to Obama allies. "The challenges our country faces are simply too great to let these debates be overrun by those angrily shouting down change"
You can read the entire letter below the fold. OFA joins its kissing cousin the DNC, along with Democratic party leaders in strongly denouncing the shout downs. Republicans, meanwhile, continue to (at least) tacitly endorse these activities.
Friend --
Tomorrow, Vice President Joe Biden is coming to speak in Detroit. I'd like to extend a special invitation to Michiganders to join us in showing our support for the President and Vice President.
This event comes at a crucial time. Special interests trying to sink health insurance reform. Organized mobs across the country are intimidating lawmakers, disrupting events, and silencing discussions about the change our country needs. The challenges our country faces are simply too great to let these debates be overrun by those angrily shouting down change.
Join us and stand with Vice President Biden -- here are the details:
WHAT: Vice President Joe Biden in Detroit
WHERE: Green space at the intersection of Woodward Ave and Burroughs StreetDetroit, Michigan
WHEN: Wednesday, August 5th11:00 a.m. Eastern Time
RSVP today:

Last fall, when Swiftboaters and special interests attacked President Obama and Vice President Biden, folks like you came to their defense. We knocked on doors, talked to neighbors, and made our voices heard.
Now, we need to do it again. This time, they're under attack by Washington insiders, insurance companies, and well-financed special interests who don't go a day without spreading lies and stirring up fear. We need to show that we're sick and tired of the fear mongering.
Join us tomorrow and show that you're standing up for the President and Vice President as they fight for the change this country needs.

I hope to see you there.
Thanks,
Organizing for America

Time to step up and but our actions where our mouths are. This Congress is our chance, perhaps our last chance for serious energy and health reform. Just think of how deflated the reactionaries that our trying to shut down our discourse will be if we succeed.
Now more than ever, there's no reason to leave anything on the court.

Would LOVE to help ... if only the town hall my Rep is holding wasn't in the middle of this afternoon out in the middle of nowhere a good 90 minutes away. Some of us have to work.
And so far it's the only one he has scheduled, according to his website. Pffft.

I'm in CT and I also missed the Dodd thing (also during the work day). And Leiberman's got NOTHING scheduled, as least as far as I could figure after scouring his website. Pffft again.

Groups like OFA and MoveOn.org need to get back into 2008 campaign mode to counter the teabaggers. They are way too late and the response by the left has been pretty weak.

Well, we just had a rally in Chicago organized by HCAN with hundreds of supporters. The dozen or so Tea-baggers who showed up were sidelined to a far-off corner across the street from us.
Their presence was a little like the people who come with pictures of fetuses and 'God-hates-fags' signs at other events.
FWIW, here are some pictures along with my (brief) account:

Went to a town hall in Oregon Aug. 3 run by our Sen. Jeff Merkley. He did such a great job of setting guidelines at the beginning--no more than one question to a person and allow that person to speak. About 80 people, a few vocal nuts ("this plan is to kill off old people like me," "Podesta and the Apollo Alliance (?!) are in charge of making this country a dictatorship," etc.) Jeff kept things calm not only by his rules but by his demeanor--never rose to any bait. At the end he took a poll of various options in health care reform and I believe a mix of private insurance/public option got the most votes. Was surprised that "keep the status quo" got so few votes, maybe less than 1/5 of those there, because they seemed so vocal it seemed like there were more of them. P. S. I looked up the Podesta/Apollo thing--turns out Glen Beck was raving about this conspiracy plot just last week on Fox.

Why is it described as a mob? If it was a progressive protest we would consider it patriotic. Remember, "dissent is patriotic"? Need to practice what we preach, folks.

If were a progressive protest, the people would be read their rights and taken away...
or assigned to "free speech zones."
And you know it.

Last time I checked, progressive protests weren't being funded and carefully orchestrated behind the scenes by corporate lobbying firms.

This is not "dissent" it is disruption. There is a difference. Townhalls public events that invite the public, are meant as a way for constituents to meet with and discuss issues with their representatives. Hindering that is un-democratic.
Code Pink's actions are often cited as an example of lefty disruption, but they are disrupting events where the public is not invited. What they are doing is Political Theater.

Why describe them as a mob? With congressmen needing police escorts to get out safely, it's not obvious? When was the last time single-payer advocates got violent?

Back to the Merkley townhall--he helped to keep it at "dissent not disruption" by defusing the opposition. When the placard guy ("No Socialized Medicine!") asked "Have you read ALL 1000 pages of this bill?!" Sen. Merkley said calmly "Yes. I am on the health committee and we've spent 15 weeks on it." When the sweet old grandmother, who first apologized for being a nervous speaker and then angrily went into Glen Beck's Podesta/Apollo conspiracy rant ("they're making American a dictatorship!" (fevered applause from the audience), Merkley acted perplexed and said he was not familiar with this but would she please come and talk to him about it AFTER the meeting. Really masterful, like watching a good teacher subtly keep control of a potentially unruly classroom.
I guess my point is we are not necessarily at their mercy.

I don't agree that this is democratic dissent. It's lies and intimidation organized by the greedy health care industry.
Democracy is about the people, not about corporations spreading fear.

All I have to say to President Obama and the Democrats is ... Welcome to the rewards phase of bipartisanship!
Like a puppy that $hits on the carpet, you've got to rub their noses in it and get your point across their behavior is not acceptable.
So when Obama decides to let the DoJ and Congress start investigating the crimes of Bu$h and company along with all the repuglican enablers, only then will bipartisanship be an acceptable diplomatic tool to offer.

One other thing too. All this talk about Democracy has me confused. I thought we were a Republic, not a Democracy. When did we change? - seems I didn't get the memo. They're really are totally distinct, different types of governing.
