Poll: A Lot Of Birthers In North Carolina, And Few State GOPers Say Obama Born Here

A new survey of North Carolina by Public Policy Polling (D) finds that only 54% of the state's voters say President Obama was born in the United states, with 26% saying he was not and another 20% not sure.

Among North Carolina Republicans, a 47% plurality -- nearly a full majority -- say Obama was not born in America. Only 24% of state Republicans say he was born here, with 29% not sure.

It gets better, with PPP asking this question: "Do you consider Hawaii to be part of the United States?" Here it's 92% saying yes, 5% saying no, and 3% not sure. Among Republicans, 88% say Hawaii is a part of America, to 7% who say it is not, and 4% aren't sure.

There are alot of really easily lead dumb asses here in NC. They would rather yell, whoop it up and raise hell for any reason rather have a well thought reason for any political position or issue. I believe it is related to moon shining and NASCAR!

Teh stupid. It burns.

user-pic

7% say hawaii is not part of the US? Ok this is frightening. The republican party has done a great job on education the last 30 years or so. Just like mushrooms keep them in the dark and keep feeding them
sh%t. Pathetic

Is anyone asking the North Carolinians if Panama (where McCain was born) is part of the U.S.?

user-pic

Birth certificates?  Phooey!  I want DNA tests for presidential candidates born outside the USA.  And, of course, testing for the parents from whom they claim they get their citizenship.

And just so I don't appear to be completely mean, I'll support reimbursement by the Feds for the cost of having that candidate's parents' bodies exhumed for testing.

For many of my state's denizens, it's not so much about the WHERE as it is about the WHO. If the question about Panama were asked, it would get a pass - McCain's their boy, and their responses would reflect that thinking. It stands to reason that no one with an actual grade school education would doubt that Hawaii is one of the 50 states, but willful ignorance demands that some of the people MUST say it isn't - even though they almost certainly HAVE to know that it is.

These people are too stupid to be trusted with anything sharper than a sponge...

Don't mention the McCain part. Just "Is Panama part of the U.S., Sparky?"

user-pic

I really would be terribly curious to see polled, just once, what percentage of people believe John McCain was born in the U.S..

Also think it's unfortunate that DailyKos never released crosstabs for the "Obama born in U.S." vs "were Africa and America once part of the same continent?" questions.

user-pic

I think they need to include other states as a control group. You know, also ask whether they think New Mexico, or Utah, etc are part of the United States.

user-pic

Or Alaska.

user-pic

They should Hawaiians if they think North Carolina is part of the United States. And who the hell has ever heard of RHODE ISLAND???

user-pic

When you see stats like that, how can you even hope to have a legitimate debate on the issues?

user-pic

I'd like to say something snide about the citizens of my adopted state, but, to be fair, a big chunk of that 7% is quite likely to be people who know Hawaii is a state but had a brain fart under the pressure of being questioned and interpreted the question as asking them whether it was part of the contiguious 48.

People who are visual rather than verbal thinkers would be particularly susceptable to make that kind of error.

As to the birther percentage, on the other hand, it doesn't surprise me a bit. most of this state's voting Republicans get half their "news" from Fox and the rest from emails with the words "Send this to everyone you know!" in them somewhere.

user-pic

Remember when DailyKos first got R2K to poll this question and everyone accused them of having somehow liberal-biased the poll somehow?

user-pic

Only 54% of the overall electorate thinks that he was born in this country? Obama won that state 50% to 49%. This implies either that Obama won all but 4% of those votes cast by the non-lunatics, or else that there was some substantial fraction of voters in NC who thought he was constitutionally ineligible for the office but voted for him anyway. That is really nuts. It rather makes me wonder about the accuracy of the PPP poll.

user-pic

Actually, these polls have regularly showed that ~10-15% of people who voted *for* Obama think that he was born outside of the US and/or a Muslim.

For what it may be worth there is some legal discussion as to whether Hawaii IS part of the US. I just got an email from my cousin in Hawaii, who has been there since before the Viet Nam conflict began, that pointed out that the Hawaiian independent monarchy under a Queen whose name I can't spell was forcibly annexed to the US by the US marines at the behest of the Dole Fruit Co. so they could get control of the pineapple production. Since military conquest was an illegal method of acquiring territory at the time under international law, there is some doubt as to the legal status of US domination of Hawaii. Even so, since Pres. Obama's mother was a US citizen, so is he, even if he were born in South Carolina.

user-pic

It's more complicated than that. The monarchy was overthrown in 1893 by a group of wealthy American plantation owners (led by Samuel Dole), who were hoping for the islands to be annexed by the US. But the US government at the time recognized it as illegal, so Hawaii was an independent "republic" until 1898 when American colonialism finally got started in earnest.

That would be Queen Lili`uokalani, BTW.
