How much chance does health care reform have in Arkansas if Arkansans trust Rush Limbaugh more than Barack Obama?

The new survey of Arkansas from Public Policy Polling (D) finds the state to be very conservative, very Birtherist, and very much opposed to President Obama on health care -- despite the fact that the state's Democrats are typically dominant and hold all major offices right now.

Only 40% approve of President Obama's job performance, with 56% disapproving -- matching up pretty closely with John McCain's 59%-39% victory here in 2008. In addition, only 45% say Obama was born in the United States, with a strong 31% saying he was not, and 24% unsure. Among Republicans in Arkansas, the Birther question comes up as 23%-49%-28%.

On health care, only 29% support Obama's plan, with 60% against it. In addition, respondents were asked whether Rush Limbaugh or Barack Obama has the better vision for America: Limbaugh 55%, Obama 45%. And keep in mind that this is a state where Dems have both Senate seats and three out of four House members

Statistics like this can have a real impact on politics. From the pollster's analysis: "These numbers, taken together, show why Blanche Lincoln's Senate seat is becoming an enticing target for Republicans in spite of their candidate recruitment issues," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "There are few states that have an electorate more conservative than Arkansas' and if the GOP can effectively nationalize the race it'll be close."

And if the Republicans can defeat HCR, their chances of nationalizing Blanche Lincoln rise exponentially

Maybe, just maybe, if Lincoln were to stand up for the little guy, her numbers might not be so bad.

But that's conjecture, since it's never going to happen.

How many times are you going to post poll results from that shithole commonly referred to as Arkansas? They are racist, inbred, worthless crackers who, on average, make Billy Bob Thornton's character in "Sling Blade" look like William F. Buckley, and they all hate Obama. Message received.

But they also have, what five electoral votes, and are mostly irrelevant to the national debate. Yet somebody seems to be polling the shit out of them to add support for the argument that "Real America" thinks Obama is not a citizen, and you seem happy to jump on that bandwagon. What gives?

they have two senators like every other state.

and you might have noticed that the senate is where health care reform is is bottled up.

that makes arkansas hardly irrelevant to the national debate.

much as montana and north dakota and wyoming are hardly irrlevant to the national debate.

And yet, just think how much benefit could be gained by those same people of Arkansas from a Federally subsidized system of free/cheap clinics and increased availability/affordability of insurance. It's sometimes amazing and always discouraging just how hard it is to get people to make the connection that they are strongly opposed to something that would personally benefit them.

I can attest to this. I recently transplanted to Arkansas to live with my fiance for awhile after getting out of the Army.

The lies about the Health care bill are treated as biblical truth here, and yet noone that I've asked has even fact checked the stuff they believe, muchless read the bill. They also refer to Fox News as "real news."

I've read several letters to the news paper along the lines of "get the government out of my Medicare." A response to that letter was printed stating the obvious, that Medicare wouldn't exist without the Government. The general response to that, shown over several letters, was that that belief is just what the angry, fascist Democrats want people to believe.

Yeah. This state needs help. In other news, if any sane Arkansas happen to be reading this, I'd love some rational company.

Not much has changed in Arkansas since African American children were attacked and taunted trying to attend school in 1957, and the governor called out the National Guard to prevent them.

As a liberal Democrat that could never vote Republican I do not approve of President Obama's job performance. I am sorry but we did not put him in charge to placate Republicans. We put him in office becasue we believed he was a true progressive. But it seems he is a serial bend over backwardser. I sure would love to see how Hilalry would have taken on her critics if she were president of the US. Do you think she would care what people said about her and whther they were lying about her? The woman was called every name in the book for more than 15 years and still is a battler. Obama tries to be everyone's best friend.

The only point I am trying to make about Hillary is she would rather call her opponents out for what they really are than placate them. Do you think a public option will be in the bill that Obama signs? Do you think he won't sign it if it does not include a public option? The guy, and I am glad he is the president, is a poltical neophyte that has never understood the way DC runs. At least he governs as if that is the case. When you are the most popular man in America, you don't hand over legislation duties to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. You lay out your plan and you fight your arse off to make sure it is adhered to. You can't just say, "ok, we can do COOPS instead of a Public Option if you guys stop calling me a socialist". The guy has been rolled like pizza crust on this issue and it was probably the defining issue of his campaign. Sorry but count me as someone disappointed in Obama's job performance. I want a leader, not a placater.

If our secratary of state were president the story would be about how she is screwing up the healthcare debate instead of about how Obama is screwing it up. Our president is not the problem. The Senate is.

Thank you. The forces arrayed against true health reform are formidable, and the looming crisis in our broken system hasn't yet fully manifested, so the status quo still has the better of this argument.

But can we once and for all kill the "If only Hillary" argument? It's an unprovable asssertion, and those of us who opposed her in the primaries did so for totally valid reasons.

lol. If Hillary had been the nominee, she would likely have lost the general election, but in the event that she had not, she wouldn't have touched health care reform with a ten-foot pole. Why on Earth would she consider revisiting her single greatest political defeat? All in all, though, we would probably have seen more action on prosecuting the torturers.

So you are disappointed in Obama's job performance so far? We bail out the banks but the people are suffering their rear ends off. We say we are closing Guantanamo, too bad we don't know where to take them. We say we are ending torture but rendition to other countries who torture is a-OK. We say we had an awful abuses of power by Bush officials but now we should let the past be the past. We say Health care for all but then we accept COOPS instead of a public option. We say no lobbyists will be in the White House unless we get a special waiver that oks it. We say we must have transparency but not for everything. Come on folks, being disappointed in the president's performance makes you a liberal. Being happy with his performance makes you a partisan democrat.

Take a look at the state just to the west, where the dynamic duo of Inhofe and Coburn lead the way. The state where Obama won NO counties in the entire state. Then take a look just south of Arkansas to where I live and suffer amongst wingnuts, Gov Goodhair, Big John, and the soon to leave the senate, Kay Bailey the cheerleader.

Quite frankly, fuck Arkansas. Who needs them? There aren't even 3 million of them and something like 10% work for the chicken industry. Again, fuck 'em. I almost feel like if some form of universal care passes and 56% of Arkansas doesn't want it then don't let them have access to it. Rush Limbaugh can step in to cover their medical expenses. If they don't want recession stimulus dough, fine, send it elsewhere.

And while we're all it, since they are all anti-tax, then I say they get back exactly $1 for every dollar they pay in federal taxes rather than the $1.50 they sponge off of us now. Talk about welfare states -- they are in the Top 10. Arkansas is full of dumb-ass hypocrites. It's time to cut them off. Let them live by their "personal responsibility" and see if they can't up their 10% teen pregnancy rate with more bibles and less condoms.

For those unfortunate Arkansinians that can see the BS in Rush Limbaugh, we can offer them free plane tickets to any other state if they like.

Calling us all stupid inbred rednecks (and other names I prefer to not even type) does no more to further the health care debate than the anti-Obama forces do with their "Obama is a Nazi who wants to kill your grandmother" rhetoric?

By the way, I do not listen to Limbaugh, have Fox New blocked on my television, and my husband and I watch KO and Rachel every night.

Hi. I was born, raised and currently live in Arkansas. For those curious, I can explain these weird things about my state.

First you may be wondering why so many (just over half!) people question or deny the citizenship of our president. It is racism. I'm sure that is no shock to hear. But as a non-racist, white Arkansan I have been shocked many times over at how ignorant and repulsive otherwise seemingly decent people's attitudes are over race. The racism is no longer flaunted publicly as it was just a few decades ago. Rather it is kept under the surface, only to be revealed when in the right company or talked about in code that non-racist may not understand. And these folks will grasp at anything that reinforces their prejudice towards our president due to his skin color.

Second, how can we have Democrats as both senators, three of our four representatives, every state-wide office and overwhelming majorities in both state chambers and still be so conservative? To answer this one we have to look back to history. Arkansans pride themselves on tradition, and voting patterns are no exception. The lone Republican representative from Arkansas is from the northwestern part of the state. This is the part of the state where most folks sided with the union during the Civil War. The rest of the state was solidly with the confederacy. There are literally generation after generation of voters in Arkansas that will keep voting for X party simply because their parents did.

Has a state that voted for Bill Clinton as governor and then president really become that much more conservative? LOL. No, not hardly. At least in the sense that people are now waking up to some new political ideology. Rather the people here are, in general, not very well educated. Back when Bill was getting elected we did not have Rush Limbaugh and Fox News selling conspiracy, hate and self righteousness from The Right. Unfortunately, the uneducated are exactly who are drawn into the twisted world view the right-wing noise machine pumps out.

Is Arkansas full of stupid, inbred rednecks (and other names)? Yes, this is true. Arkansas *is* full of stupid, inbred rednecks. However, the inbred thing is very exaggerated. Most are simply stupid rednecks.

Even so, there are enclaves of nice, decent progressives, too. A few of them have posted in the comments above. We are just like progressives everywhere and generally share all of the same policy views and attitudes. So when you say, "Fuck Arkansas, they didn't vote for Obama." I say, "No, fuck you. I did vote for Obama." Along with 40% of voters in this state.

So why would a progressive live in Arkansas? Aside from Republicans (which I've heard can actually live anywhere!), this isn't such a bad place. The cost of living is extremely cheap. The job market is not too bad. The roadways are not overly congested. There are nice places to go camping, hiking, bicycling, sailing, and just about any other outdoor activity (no further than a thirty minute drive from where I live). In fact, there are not many places in the US where I would rather live.

Liberals need to learn that some people will always be enemies. The goal is not to turn fascist wackjobs into allies. The goal is to defeat them and make them irrelevant. It's a waste of time trying to persuade these sorts of people. If they liked fairness and democracy, and had functioning brains, they would already be on our side. They are not on our side because they value fundamentally different things.

I just moved to Arkansas from Texas, and so was rather appalled to hear this poll reported on the local news last night. (I'm from Dallas; the county voted for Obama at least.) The local news got what this article didn't. The poll was heavily skewed toward older voters; less than 15% of the people polled were under the age of 30, and I would hazard to guess that the number holds true for those under the age of 45 or so. So, the news station went and interviewed students at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and not a single student they talked to seemed impressed with the idea of Rush Limbaugh. One visibly recoiled at the idea. They generally supported Obama. The reporter also implied that even though the poll was run by an independent organization, the pollster had close ties to Republicans.

Throughout the 70s and 80s Arkansas was among the most progressive of the Confederate States. Dale Bumpers and David Pryor were excellent Senators, and Bill Clinton is the only two-term Democratic President of the last 60 years. Instead of raging at them as redneck racists, it would make more sense for us to try to understand why things have come to this point. How is it possible that the state continues to be overwhelmingly Democratic at every level except President, but is so far out of touch with the principles the Democratic Party has espoused for the last 30 years?

Poor, uneducated, religious, non-unionized Whites from rural areas were moving toward the Republicans long before Barack Obama started running for President. I think a large part of the problem is that since Clinton, Bumpers, and David Pryor left the public stage, there has not been a Democratic leader in Arkansas capable of making the case for a Democratic view of government. Lincoln and Mark Pryor are empty suits. Maybe Gov. Beebe will be better.

Perhaps things have gone south for the Democrats in Arkansas because the people are a bunch of redneck racists, but that conclusion should be drawn only after examining alternative explanations.
