Poll: McDonnell Way Ahead In Virginia -- Because Republicans Are More Motivated
A new survey of Virginia from Public Policy Polling (D) finds Republican former state Attorney General Bob McDonnell with a big lead over Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds -- with GOPers currently a lot more motivated to be likely voters right now.
The numbers: McDonnell 51%, Deeds 37%. A key number: 52% of respondents voted for John McCain last years, compared to 41% who say they voted for Obama -- even though Obama carried the state by 53%-47%. This is fully consistent with last week's SurveyUSA poll, which put McDonnell ahead by 55%-40% on a sample that McCain carried by 52%-43%. (Numbers on this question never add up to 100, because some respondents won't divulge how they voted.)
From the pollster's analysis: "It's not that voters are changing sides from last fall- the 5% of John McCain's voters planning to vote for Deeds is actually equal to the 5% of Barack Obama's voters planning to vote for McDonnell. But Republicans, on a losing streak in Virginia, appear to be more motivated about heading to the polls at this point three months before the election."
So the big question for Deeds, then, is whether he can energize all those Democratic-leaning people who aren't likely to vote now, and turn them into participants in future polls -- especially that one in November.

The PPP poll survey party breakdown was Democrats 32%, Republicans 35%, and "Other" 33%. That does not seem to reflect the current breakdown in Virginia which has become more Democratic than Republican.

I wonder if neither PPP nor SurveyUSA weighted their sample because the respondent numbers are definitely way different than the actual party ID split in VA. Remember, in both polls we're talking about likely voters - that measure could exclude a lot of the first time Dem voters in VA who came out to vote for Obama in November. And I think that's the point - if Dems came out the same as they did in November 2008 - or at least close - then the LV party ID split would favor the Dems and the overall numbers would probably favor Deeds a bit. But what these pollsters are seeing is that a lot of Dems may be sitting this one out.

Listen, Corzine + Deeds, one or both of you have to win! I do not want to be subjected to the endless chattering in the media of the demise of Obama and the Democrats. And lord knows I don't want Rudy to get excited and decide he should run for governor of New York.

Deeds once again proves that people will vote for a real republican over a rethuglican lite.
Deeds managed to alienate N. Virginia with his yokel appaeal and the educated aren't buying it while the GRE crowd is already in the rethuglican column.
Lesson to be learned let a real Democrat get the nomination if you want to win.

White House needs to recapture excitement, have to be for something. That we should get behind a bill that isn't written and we're not sure how it will end up is not the ticket.

I think we should take a break on both the Virginia and NJ gubenatorial elections. Let the rubes win. Let the party rest.
1) It would be a relief to see either of those governors rise to national prominence; the GOP really needs a rational spokesman. Either of these guys would be cut to ribbons by the GOP party base and they would sap funds from Romney and Pawlenty.
2) Given the problems in those states, two years of mismanagement and scandal can only help in 2012.

"Real" Democrats are a very rare species in Virginia these days. And real Democrats with the stature to run for statewide office are all but extinct.

Well, shoot, I could have sworn I clicked "Reply," but maybe not. The above was in answer to "rational".
I really hate this crappy messaging software.

This is one of the most-read "political" blogs. Trolls aside, that represents a lot of people. Each and every one of you in this country is in a congressional district.
I challenge each and ever one of you who is supporting Obama - even if you're not happy with everything
he's done - to attend any "town hall" hosted by your Representative. And to take 2 or 3 like-minded people with you.
Your task? To counter the "mob" that will be perhaps be there to disturb activities. To insist that any media there accurately report the session, including the fact that probably sane, reasonable people are there.
If you/we don't get away from our keyboards and get out and combat these people, they'll win. If we do, then we will, on sheer numbers alone.
If you don't.....well, I'm sorry for you.
