The latest national survey from Public Policy Polling (D) -- in addition to its intriguing finding that Republicans think the government should stay out of Medicare -- also supplies a complex study of the Birther issue.

The poll found that only 62% of voters said President Obama was born in the United States, 25% saying he was not and 14% not sure. Among Republicans, a 44% plurality say he was not born in the U.S., to 36% who say he was, and the remaining 20% not sure.

But if we've established a belief that Obama was not born here, exactly where did the blessed event occur? Respondents were asked in order whether Obama was in Indonesia, whether he was born in Kenya, or the Philippines, or France. Among the 38% who did not say Obama was born here, 10% said Indonesia, 7% said Kenya, 1% said the Philippines, and zero percent said France.

It seems odd that more Birthers would say Obama was born in Indonesia, given that everyone knows Kenya is the right answer. Perhaps this was simply caused by Indonesia being the first foreign country on the list.

The really odd thing is that it appears a lot of people answered "no" to all the possibilities. Maybe they should have asked about Mars or Jupiter.

I expect that is the substantial portion of the birthers who acknowledge that Obama was born in Hawaii, but that don't acknowledge that Hawaii Is (or at least was in at the time) a state.

Anyone want to bet that no one that answered Indonesia, Kenya or Philippines could find those countries on a map?

I think we need a free-response question. Just ask "where was Barack Obama born?" People may be less willing to volunteer an outside-the-U.S. location if the question hasn't prompted them with an opportunity to "be difficult".

Dumb is the new American Way....

The good part starts around the 2:40 mark.

What we need, as urgently as anything else is EDUCATION REFORM. The stats related by Maher in this clip are stunning, and are as scary as anything else I have heard about this 'effed up country in a long time.

You are kidding. You actually think that that would get through with republicans controlling the show? They would bill that one as government indoctrinating kids with liberal ideas, which is what they have been doing. Keep them dumb and stupid and they will vote republican. Call the dumbing down "no child left behind" and the stoopid masses will think that the repukes are for education reform. Where have you been? You know that people with a modicum of education vote dem.

Obama was born on the planet Bipartisan where the inhabitants solve all their problems just by joining hands and singing Kumbaya. ;)

After a long day of tending to the arugula fields, the children of Bipartisan are so tired, they can barely stay awake during Socialism class.

I actually heard a guy on msnbc who had a valid point. The king lost to gore and he barely beat kerry, or maybe not. However, he governed like he had a mandate and rammed sh*t through. Obama won a freaking landslide and he is acting like he barely won. Ram it through and govern like he has the mandate that he has. One termer so be it. Get sh*t done for pete's sake.

Medicare for all is a great bumper sticker slogan. Single payer and do an exec order waiving the age limit for medicare. Screw all this stuff.

The current political debates are the best evidence yet of the gross deficiencies of the American educational system. And these are evidently long-standing deficiencies, given the number of middle-aged and older Congressmembers who are surpassingly ignorant.

It started in 1980 with "morning in america". They wanted to abolish the department of education, remember? As opposed to abolishing it, they just cut off funding.

They did a poll and the result was uneducated people vote for republicans. People with educations vote dem. Keep them dumb and stooopid and they will vote repuke. Throw in racists and you have the workings of a repuke majority.

It is interesting that none of the polls published give "raw data" as to the actual number of respondents who say they are Republican, Democrat or Independent (other). Consider a 40% disapproval rating: If this was the opinion of 10 individuals that is only 4 people. What this poll does indicate is that 87% of those with a negative opinion are Republicans, but the PPL averages that disapproval with the admitted Democratic voters to come up with a number...that is skewed.
Until any polling institution is going to provide real numbers, they will continue to manipulate the data and it will be worthless.

Jesus Christ just because Birfers are bat-shit crazy racists doesn't mean their stories don't have an underlying coherence. This is typical of all conspiracy theories from LaRouche to Area 51 to the Grassy Knoll.

Even not crazy people know that Obama's mother married an Indonesian name Lolo Soetoro and that he has a half sister named Maya Soetoro-Ng. We also have pictures of Obama as a little boy in Indonesia. If a Birfer is going to pick from a list that includes France, Indonesia and the Phillipines OF COURSE they are going to pick Indonesia. This should be no more surprising than Trekkies being able to name Spock's mother or a tween being able to pick the Jonas Brothers favorite snack food from a generated list.

The basic Obama/Indonesian story is plausible. Totally wrong in the end, but plausible. Mostly it doesn't start with him actually being born in Indonesia, the result of the cited poll is just a spillover from the regular narrative. It goes like this.

1. Lolo Soetoro marries Ann Dunham in Hawaii in 1964 and moves with her and her young son to Indonesia in 1967.

2. While in Indonesia young Obama is enrolled in school. In an apprantly authentic copy of his school records he is enrolled under the name 'Barry Soetoro' with a religion of 'Islam' and a nationality of 'Indonesia'
http://obamaimpeachment.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/boindsch2.jpg

Okay to this point the narrative is still anchored in reality. From here on it is all speculation and misapplication of relevant law.

3. Birfers claim that the name on the records and the nationality stated prove that Lolo adopted Barack and in so doing caused Barack to lose his citizenship.

Now there is no evidence put forth that affirmatively shows that Soetoro formally adopted Barack or that under Indonesian law that would automatically grant young Barack Indonesian citizenship but no matter the Birfers are off to the races.

In response we don't have to deny the validity of the record as shown in the JPEG. After all a man legally named Leslie Lynch King went all through grade school, high school and University under a different name, becoming an Eagle Scout and an All-American football player along the way. You can just imagine the fun Birfers would have with comparing the 1913 birth certificate and the school and scouting records of the man who wouldn't become legally known as Gerald Ford Jr. until 1935.

Is it possible that young Obama was known to family and friends in Indonesia as 'Barry'? Sure, why not. Is it reasonable that his step-father enrolled him in school under the name of Soetoro? Certainly, just as young Gerald/'Jerry' 'Ford' was probably happy not to have to explain why his real name was Leslie and that his mother was a divorcee. The school records correctly list Obama's place of birth as Honolulu, Hawaii, listing his nationality as 'Indonesia' and his religion as 'Islam' might be easily explained by security concerns for a young American is a country being roiled by political violence.

So people who claim that a one point in his life Obama was Muslim and Indonesian are not crazy in the same way the Kenya Birthers are. It just turns out that none of that would matter. Children are not competent to renounce their citizenship and under the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 their parents and guardians cannot irrevocably renounce it on their behalf.

From and after the effective date of this Act a person who is a national of the United States whether by birth or naturalization, shall lose his nationality by -- (1) obtaining naturalization in a foreign state upon his own application, upon an application filed in his behalf by a parent, or duly authorized agent, or through the naturalization of a parent having legal custody of such person: Provided, That nationality shall not be lost by any person under this section as the result of the naturalization of a parent or parents while such person is under the age of twenty-one years, or as the result of naturalization obtained on behalf of a person under twenty-one years of age by a parent, guardian, or duly authorized agent, unless such person shall fail to enter the United States to establish a permanent residence prior to his twenty-fifth birthday:
If you spend any time in the weeds of Birferism you will see all kinds of dark talk about Indonesian passports, and sealed school records in Hawaii and California, and kids named 'Barry' but you can grant them every bit of their suspicions and it wouldn't matter, as long as we can place Barack Obama on American soil prior to 1986 he is an American citizen, nothing that was done legally or informally between 1961 and 1986 matters any more than do events between 1913 and 1935 matter for President Ford.

I am not saying the Indonesia brand of Birfers are not acting in bad faith or motivated by racism and hatred of Islam because many of them are guilty of both. But this brand of Birferism is a different and somewhat less deranged form of crazyness than that of Orly et al.

You put up 3 numbered, complete, logical bullet points? Man, you have pushed WAY past the limits of Birfer math and language skills. While I was writing this comment, they were still phoning a friend to find out the name of Spock's mother.

It's just so much easier to scream "OBAMA AIN'T A CITIZEN!!!"

Thanks I think.

The point is that there are two kinds of crazies here.

1) You got your mouth breathers and brown shirts. These people believe the Big Lie. Or don't care. They got their marching orders.
2) You got your modern Goebbels. These people make up the Big Lie. And give out the marching orders.

You have to vary your tactics depending on the crazy. For example that woman LaRouchite confronting Franks was crazier than a bed bug. That doesn't mean she could not explain in detail the argument of her leader, she likely works in the modern equivalent of the Ministry of Propaganda where such skills are deliberately taught. On your other hand your more typical screamer only knows what he knows, and that is that the white working man just doesn't have a chance anymore. You don't get to this guy with census figures on income among ethnic and sex breakdowns, his brain is not working on the plane at all.

This is an excellent point. A truly non-pushing poll would simply ask where was Barack Obama born. That said, more folks believe Obama was born here than believe in evolution, and 18% of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth, so not sure why this gets so much oxygen,

My question is: Why did Obama fly to three different countries to seal his birth certificates???? You can only be born in one place at one time. His ascendancy to president of the U.S.A. is proof positive that this is what happens when stupid, uninformed, uneducated people are allowed to vote.Obama has some 'splaining to do' don't you think? Just don't hold your breath for it. The transparancey he promised has vanished into thin air just like everything else he promised to get elected.
