Poll: Palin Still Loved By Republicans -- And Would Lose To Obama In Landslide

A new Marist poll has a mix of good news and bad news for Sarah Palin -- and unmitigated good news for Democrats. On the one hand, she remains a plausible candidate for the GOP nomination in 2012, but in a general election she would lose to President Obama in a landslide.

Among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, the 2012 field stands at Mitt Romney 21%, Sarah Palin 20%, Mike Huckabee 19%, Newt Gingrich 10%, Bobby Jindal 5%, and Tim Pawlenty 1%. But in a general election, it's Obama 56%, Palin 33%.

Also, Palin's overall favorable rating is only 37%, with 43% unfavorable. But among Republicans, it's a whopping 73% favorable, to only 16% unfavorable.

From the pollster's analysis:

Is the GOP nomination within her sights? You betcha! Palin could carry her intense following into key caucus and primary states. But, herein lies the rub. Palin trails President Obama by 23 percentage points nationwide in this same Marist Poll.

Cause for GOP worry? Absolutely.

Timmeh! Pulling a whopping 1%!

Wait until the GOPers learn how you slashed taxes and screwed your state, Pawlenty. Then you'll start to feel the love.

He's probably their most viable candidate, yet boring as wallpaper paste. And polling at 1% -- ouch! Just like the GOP to go for the unviable freaky fringe people and not the ones who could actuqlly win.

Saying that Timmeh is their most viable candidate is setting a pretty low bar, but you're right.

He looks OK in a suit, isn't too bright, but isn't really in love with teh crazy. Kind of a northern Dubya.

Huckabee's the one who worries me. He's fairly well spoken and is REALLY in love with teh crazy.

Ubür-slime Robert Novak has died. I guess that leaves the Palin cheerleading squad one liar short.

Love it. I wonder if the GOP would be stupid enough ....

And it might not be their choice. If the little Quitter thinks she hears God calling her, she'll jump in.

On the one hand, it would be another craqsh and burn for the GOP, and well deserved.

But OTOH we have to listen to the carping and smearing and nasty trash talk from the kook for the next few years.

Let's get Bachman on the ticket, does God make conference calls?

Don't you listen to those liberal elitist pollsters an' their skewed troop-hating polls, Republicans! Sarah will speak down to the heart of people across this land and also, too, winning them over with her charm and common sense answers to America's wantings. Landsliding will be yours with Palan/Bachmann in 2012!

She's got a real chance. So does Mitt & the Huckster. And neither of them needs to get more than 30% of the Republicans to do it (at least the ones in early contests).

The problem the GOP's got goes to their philosophy of choosing a candidate. They believe that a candidate should be selected rapidly, bypassing a bruising primary battle (ala Obama/Clinton), and then everyone rallies behind The Anointed One. To make this happen, their primaries are winner-take-all.

McCain racked up an almost insurmountable delegate lead despite never pulling above 50% among REPUBLICANS in their primaries and caucuses. (He only started getting above 50% once everyone else dropped out.)

So all Palin - or Mitt - or (shudder) Huckabee or Bachmann has to do is beat everyone else in a close race for the first few primaries, ala McCain.

I predict (and hope) that in 2012, the GOP nomination will be won by the craziest candidate. Not the most electable, not by the candidate who doesn't crash an burn, but the craziest.

The sane Republicans (those few left) will know that Obama's getting a second term no matter what, so they won't be fired up. The crazies, on the other hand, will win the day: the more popular and successful that Obama is, the more fired up and motivated the crazies will be.

For our next President, the highest office in the land:
Competent intelligent highly educated fair minded black guy with perfect family: only 56%, a bit over half.
Demonstrably uninformed serial bullshitting and lying devisive rabble rousing white lady in designer glasses and 60's prom/Agent 99 do with unmarried mom teen daughter: 33%, one third!!!
USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

It's gotta suck to be a Republican right now. You get a choice between giant douche Mittens and turd sandwich Sarah Palin. I'm looking forward to watching Clarence Thomas and Tony Scalia grow older and older until Barack Obama gets to replace them with qualified people, for a change.
