A new Mason-Dixon poll suggests that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is in real danger for his own re-election battle in 2010, with him trailing two potential Republican nominees.
Against former UNLV basketball player Danny Tarkanian, who has previously lost races for state Senate and Secretary of State, Tarkanian has 49% to Reid's 38%. Against state GOP chair Sue Lowden, Reid trails with 40% to Lowden's 45%.
A Democratic source put a positive face on the numbers, but even then still acknowledged that Reid has a serious fight ahead: "Harry Reid has caught a few breaks since all of the A-list or even B-list candidates have declined to challenge him. That said, he's got a lot of work to do and must spend the next few months proving to Nevadans he is one of them."

My first thought too. He's losing to the JV benchsitters.

That was my immediate thought as well. If we lose one Democrat in the Senate next year, I wouldn't shed any tears if it was Harry.

This isn't good news.
With Harry intent on proving he's "one of them", he'll move even further right. And he's not going to be terribly motivated to do anything about healthcare if he thinks it will hurt his chances.

If Give Em Hell Harry thinks that Ensign and Enzi are going to save his butt, he has serious C list problems indeed

Excellent point. Reid isn't from a very blue state and this may turn him farther right.

Maybe so. But shepherding the passage of a historic HC reform bill through Congress would look pretty nice on the resume too!

Harry's problem is the total lack of economic diversity in Nevada. As everyone there now realizes casinos don't float like bubbles on the rough seas of financial ruin as easily as everyone thought they would. The state has always needed more economic diversification and if he's smart, Reid will send some serious economic aid to kick-start new industries that aren't reliant on the casino infrastructure to stay afloat.

Lowden - local TV newscaster who married a casino executive. It's the hubby's money that keeps her funded to get legislative changes in favor of the casinos. Definitely on the side of big business.
Tarkanian - big question here is ... can he stuff a towel down his throat like his daddy did? Would be sad if he wins by nothing more than his daddy's name recognition.
So, does Reid have a problem with a bunch of wannabe's running against him? Remember, Clark county has more people living there than the rest of the state and it's hugely Democrat - especially with Hispanics!
Reid's only competitor would be Kenny Guinn who happens to be more of a centrist that a hard-nosed repuglican. ANd I don't think he has any interest in the job.

No match-up poll means much of anything this far out. The numbers of whoever's in take a hit. It's a cheap way to vent.

Reid has a massive war chest - he's virtually untouchable. If he mucks up the healthcare fight though, I might be sending money to his GOP opponent. It would be addition by subtraction if Reid was defeated as it would mean new Senate leadership. Durbin would be up in the running as well, but I think he'd lose out given there would be too much power from Illinois otherwise.
The GOP will sabotage anybody running against Reid if it looks like they have a chance though - Reid is the GOP's best friend afterall, and the gift that keeps on giving.

Maybe it's time to find an actual Democrat to fill Reid's seat. The only more ineffective majority leader in modern history was Tom Daschle and he got his ass kicked for reelection too!

Nevada republicans are self destructive so Reid might not have much to worry about. But democrats and democratic independents are growing increasingly with a party that is behaving repuiblican lite.
