Specter: I'll Call Up Grassley Today And Tell Him End Of Life Counseling "Not A Death Squad"

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) just told a crowd of skeptical progressives that he's willing to take up and dispel the death panel rumor with perhaps its most respected proponent: Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

Specter said he'd call Grassley from back stage and tell him "it's not a death squad."

Progress. Earlier this week, Grassley endorsed the false rumor that Democrats were proposing a "pull the plug on granny" provision in their health care reform legislation, then turned around and scotched an end of life counseling measure the Senate Finance Committee's bill, alleging that it could be "misinterpreted" by the public.

Late update: Awwww. How sad. Seems Grassley didn't pick up the phone when Specter called him. Wonder if he got tipped off!

Here's hoping that the Grassely Gaffe enrages Senate Dems enough to shut down Circus Baucus

Grassley is senile. Time for progressive Iowa to force him into retirement. Just think Iowa, do you really want a Senator that thinks the way Sarah Palin does? THERE ARE NO DEATH PANELS. The bill only allows a doctor to get paid for discussing living wills with their patients. All of us should have a living will at any age, especially Grassley's.

If the Dems don't rake Grassley over the coals for this they will simply encourage more of this bullsh**; and if the Repugs are allowed to throw enough of this crap out there with impunity the Dems will surely lose seats in the next election.

"Awwwww. How sad."

What is this, junior high?

Senator Grassley, we already have death panels---they're called insurance companies. That's what we're trying to get rid of. So, how much money have you received from your local death panels to play the fool, Senator?

Greg Sargent reports that Grassley's telling Iowa that he's been thrown out of Circus Baucus!

Granted that he's probably forgotten what he had for breakfast but that is an offer Baucus can't refuse at this point

The tone here was a little childish.

By the way, AARP says this about the GOP lies:

http://aarp.convio.net/site/PageNavigator/Myths_vs_Facts_splash

Myth: Health care reform means the government can make life-and-death decisions for you.

Fact: Health care reform will NOT give the government the power to make life-and-death decisions for anyone regardless of their age. Those decisions will be made by individuals, their doctor and their family.

Fact: No one, including the government or your insurance company, will be given power to make life-and-death decisions for you.

Bottom Line: Health care reform isn't about putting the government in charge of difficult end of life decisions. It's about giving individuals and families the option to talk with their doctors in advance about difficult choices every family faces when loved ones near the end of their lives.
