The GOP's 40-Year Effort to "Pull the Plug" on Medicare

During the health care fight this summer, the GOP has been warning seniors, in ominous tones, of the danger that Democrats might cut Medicare--conveniently forgetting that this has been the Republican party's official position for more than a generation.

Thankfully, their words have been immortalized.

The below clip comes from a 1961 American Medical Association recording of then-actor Ronald Reagan warning that "one of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine."

Four years later, Congress would enact Medicare. At the time a Congressman named Bob Dole would vote against it. Thirty years later, as Senate Majority Leader, he bragged "I was there, fighting the fight, voting against Medicare . . . because we knew it wouldn't work."

That same year the Republicans, led by House Speaker Newt Gingrich, would shut down the government when President Bill Clinton refused to sign a Balanced Budget Bill that called for cuts to Medicare.

Then in 2006, rising Republican star Michael Steele would advocate cutting Medicare:

In 2007, Gingrich would double down:

In 2008, Republican presidential candidate John McCain campaigned on a platform of cutting $1.3 trillion from Medicare and Medicaid over 10 years.

Last month, leading Republican Roy Blunt said "government should have never have gotten in the health care business":

Yesterday, though, RNC chairman Michael Steele rose to defend America's flagship single-payer system from any cuts--without a trace of irony--insisting "we need to protect Medicare and not cut it in the name of 'health-insurance reform."

But perhaps Steele and other Republicans are beginning to realize how out of step his defense was with over 40 years of Republican dogma. Because today he said "this single-payer program known as Medicare is a very good example of what we should not have happen with all of our health care."

Good to know.

The GOP is going to platform on "killing" Medicare? Yeah we will see how well that sells with the over 65 group. With all the groups the GOP seems to be platforming against (Hispanics, African Americans, and young college educated professionals under 35) it would appear that the GOP's target audience is in full view. The white paternal hierarchy with a pro-privatization agenda!

I'm starting to think that we should cut Medicare/Medicaid entirely. Then we can look at the health reform package holistically.

What a passive way to get our point across! Let Republicans kill Medicare? We need to own the blogosphere; the television, and the town-halls! We will never win the toothless hicks that follow whatever repubs say to scare them, but it is time to stand tall and get credit for what we've accomplished against the strong arms of the billionaires who are the self-interested financial base of the republican party. They have nothing but contempt for 99% of those who are their voting base, but they continue to scare their ignorant souls with bullshit.

We are supposed to get rid of Medicare and Medicaid so everyone will see how bad it is and then vote Democratic? Grow UP! The repubs will just say it is our fault and we would just be embarassed!

It is time to call these fuckers out! Shrinking Violet time is over! Republicans are WRONG! It is time to win!

Just think about it. Grandma and grandpa having to ask their sons and daughters for money to cover medical expense. And everyone who thinks health insurance doesn't need any fixing may get hit with bills they can't even fathom. That would be the only way to make them understand the seriousness of the problem - hit them where it will hurt the most ... their pocketbooks!

I fully agree. There is a time to be nice and a time not to be. This is the time to kick butt. These guys are class 'A' liars, who appeal to those who are too lazy to read anything, or are too dumb to understand the simpliest concepts, like a "dining room table" type of people. Rise up America, and show the world that you are a country worthy of leading the world into the 21st century.

what would lbj do? call sen. tom coburn from oklahoma and tell him, "since the government as the solution is never correct," don't bother calling me or my administration the next time a town is blown away in the next tornado; or when a federal building is bombed killing 168 oklahomans, don't call us; call their neighbors.

But if you're a business in need of some special legislation to cut your taxes, get relief from regulatory agencies or are facing prosecution for violation of anti-trust laws, my secretary will make you a same day appointment.

Agree SBV. With one hand Obama begs for their cooperation, with the other hand, he hands out government checks. The spineless capitulation strategy ain't working. No more carrot, just the stick ...

Nancy was on Hardball after Ted passed, she was sounding very left-of-center. She did say she doesn't know exactly what's in the bill, so she wouldnt unequivocally support it, but she did say she really supports HCR and was most appreciative about Obama's work on opening up stem cell lines. She's a smart cookie. Pretty impressive actually that she is even interested in making any statement or appearance at all knowing that she is going to be asked questions that put her at odds with her husband's MO.

I called this one when Bush jammed his version of the drug plan thru. I told anybody that would listen, and some who would not, that this was the start of the Grover Norquist dictum. Since tax cuts were not working, the only way left to get their way is to bankrupt the nation. We can start by ammending the drug benefit into into a system that is there to benefit the nation, not the drug companies.

Excellent compilation and post!

I do think that their hypocrisy is amusing, but I also think their bigger problem should be credibility.

Why should we believe the gloom and doom now, since their predictions of gloom on this subject have never proved true.

Death Panels indeed! Their own people believe this stuff and always are willing to do so. Witness the "Birther" plurality in Republican Identified voters.

Still the issue of credibility with independents is critical. Steele is convincing some independent voters that the Gubmint is meddling with their Medicare.

You just can't miss the historic schizophrenia of the republican party. Or maybe they just say what someone is paying them to say at any given time. One thing for sure is they have no guiding principles worth a shit.

Didn't John Kerry lose an election because he was accused of being a flip flopper???
Why do those tactics work the the repubs?? It seems that when the Dems try to point out republican hypocrisy it works against them or falls on deaf ears. Can anyone explain this?

Because the republicans are so much better at seeing a nail, and right away hammering the fuck out of it until its thoroughly driven into the wood. Democrats see a nail and get into an argument over the size of the hammer needed, long heavy strokes or short quick ones, who gets to hold it, etc.

Considering that the demography in the future looks dismal for the GOP, courting the over 65 crowd is just brilliant. Also it is important to remember that if the GOP presidents had kept there hands off of surplus medicare revenues (12.8 trillion dollars has been borrowed from S.S. and medicare), it would not be in the dire straits in finds itself in. 2017 will be the first year where more monies will be paid out than taken in, thanks to Reagan and the Bushes.

It's not just the Repuglican party--the AMA was the 'invisible hand' behind Reagan's astroturf recording. This was kept secret at the time, with Reagan doing a great acting job (his forte) at being 'just a concerned citizen.' One hand washes the other, as they say.

Cut Medicare. That's a sure-fire way to guarantee that more than a few people will pull the plug on granny when the money runs out.
