Town Halls Turning Into Town Brawls

These town halls are really getting out of hand, as we saw last night in two examples.

In Missouri, at a town hall by Rep. Russ Carnahan, a fight broke out between Tea Party activists and supporters of the health care bill. Six people were arrested. It's not at all clear who started it and both sides appear to be blaming the other. To a certain degree, this is probably a consequence of so many people being packed together in a contentious debate, where the venues have been filled to capacity and people have been turned away as a result.

Check out this amateur video. Both the Tea Party and labor union folks are yelling at each other:

And of course, there's the Florida event of Rep. Kathy Castor, where a fist fight reportedly occurred. Here's a video of the protestors yelling about the doors being closed:

One thing that should be noted, despite the right-wing chants of "You work for us," and "Hear our voice," is that both of these districts are overall heavily Democratic. Carnahan's district voted 60% for Obama, and Castor's district voted 66% for Obama

Which just goes to show that the protests are bipartisan. Though I do find it interesting that apparently representatives don't "work" for conservatives in Obama districts.

More importantly the decision for Democrats to escalate the conflict will likely end badly. For the Democrats. Union goons are not a productive addition to the conflict.

What ignorance. And you seem proud to display it. The sole purpose of the teabaggers is to disrupt the proceedings, not to engage in a discussion with the Congressional representatives. It is called a "democracy" as in we won the election for change in a democracy. But you know that and are just lying like a typical Repub teabagger. The name definitely fits.

Fact: The teabaggers are only strengthening the resolve of the Congressmen to vote in favor of reform. See the comments made by several Congressmen yesterday.

BTW, since when is blatant lying an acceptable family value? Someone clearly failed to teach that to you.

user-pic

Maybe I am missing something but was it not the right-wingers that escalated the "conflict." They are the individuals that chant, show up with Nazis symbols, give death threats to a Congressman, joke about poisoning Pelosi, etc. Oh but it is the Democrats who escalate it by fighting back.

I do not condone violence in anyway but it seems that these Teabaggers are not showing up to have tea but to create a scene with a mob mentality. It was only a matter of time until somebody gets hurt. These actions to do not benefit anyone especially when healthcare reform has been reduced to 2nd graders fighting.

user-pic

I love how the conservatives cry when they get beat down after acting like tough guys. Pussies.

user-pic

"Union goons." LOL Another conservative who gets all of their knowledge from fictional TV shows and movies. I hate to cloud your rhetoric with reality, but since SEIU is the main union standing up to the astroturfers, you're more likely to see nurses there instead of Tony Soprano.

user-pic

I find the characterization "union goons" to be rather ignorant, but in the defense of Shooter242 I do not know that "goon" is really an inaccurate description of the SEIU member in that first video up top. Folks like that are doing our side no great favors. I am all in favor of our side showing up at these town-halls to out-shout the tea-party types, but one crosses the line when one knocks a teabagger down and starts kicking the fellow, justifying the matter by saying "I did not attack him, he attacked health-care."

Which just goes to show that the protests are bipartisan. Though I do find it interesting that apparently representatives don't "work" for conservatives in Obama districts.

Well, that is one possible explanation. Another is that these folks are not really Carnahan's constituents, but rather simply a bunch of rabble-rouses bussed into MO-3 from the MO-2 or MO-4 to get on the news.

user-pic

shooter242, pay atention. All you people are doing is convincing the Democrats they need to push this legislation through using the reconciliation progress and strip it completely of everything the republicans wanting in it. And don't whine about it. The republicans did exactly that from 2000 to 2006 - any legislation being considered was completely a republican bill - Democrats were not allowed to attend meetings, offer changes or their views heard or considered. Politics is a two way street and you're about to go for a ride and your Party can only sit there and watch in silence.

user-pic

I wonder if you could tell me what "shooter242" refers to. It seems to have some signifigance in this debate about inciting violence, wouldn't you agree?

user-pic

I guess reasoning is not your forte, huh? The fact that these protesters are in a heavily DEMOCRATIC district means that, they are FAUX protesting, NOT bipartisan, DUH!!!!

user-pic

At this point, I think we need to stop referring to those who set out to disrupt town hall events “reform opponents”, “protestors” or even “tea-baggers.” It’s time to start calling those who set out to disrupt public events, shutting down political discourse and silence the majority by intimidation tactics what they are – anarchists.

They are zealots possessing no coherent political philosophies and exist only to disrupt the public square. Add in the not-so-veiled threats of violence and you have the classic definition or an anarchist movement.

user-pic

Anarchists? Quite the contrary. This is how extreme authoritarians always act when they're out of power. It's the final sign that the GOP has given up all pretense of having any commitment to democracy.

user-pic

Cheers! Down goes one good shot of fine French cognac!

user-pic

Let them fight it out. The side with the most goons wins. I'm actually looking for a town hall in my district. I'm going with the intent to beat the crap out of a tea bagger!!!!

user-pic

If you need bail money, let us know. I'll donate a disposable gift credit card into the pool.

user-pic

People who lie about health care reform probably need to be knocked out.

user-pic

These right-wing mobs need to be smacked down with a strong law enforcement response. The Democrats typical wimpy, milquetoast response, like the one during the 2000 presidential election Florida recount mob scene, won't do.

This is not a free speech or civil liberties situation. This is an attempt by angry, ignorant thugs and their GOP masters who lost the last several elections to impose their will on the majority through intimidation and violence.

Enough catering to these goons already. Treat them as the seditious, disloyal, treasonous scum that they are.

user-pic

WOW!. These Repugs are becoming unhinged..HA!.

Its fun to watch. But its all fun and games until someone gets shot. These "protests" needs to be watched very carefully.

user-pic

The town halls are organized by districts with district leaders heading them, intended that way so that representatives my engage with their onstituents. The town hall organizers need to card folks at the door and let in only the people who belong to the district, or they show up with their voter registration cards and sign in (as was done during the primary caucuses). Everybody else stay outside. Anyone banging on doors or windows gets hauled off by the police for inciting a riot. Anyone on the inside yelling and screaming gets carted off as well. Ground rules should be laid out prior to each meeting. Pretty simple if you ask me. I'll be happy to show up as a supporter of health care reform, even if its not my district, but will be happy to stay outside.

user-pic

This is exactly what I've been thinking since this started blowing up. Why can't we have crowd control and rules at these things? It's not infringing on someone's free speech to require them to behave at a meeting. If you started screaming in your local movie theater (anything, not just "fire" :-P) they would throw you out.

Simple. Just say, "constituents only, inside voices please." Then have a few cops around to make sure that's the way it happens.

user-pic

Fist-fighting over health care! Tea Party members should be denied medical assistance. Again, conservatives are going crazy because they are NOT the majority, so they are throwing temper-tantrums, believing that if they are loud enough they will somehow sway people in their direction. Instead of choosing to evolve as a political party and movement, they have chosen to go medieval, resorting to running through the streets with torches and going on witch hunts.

I think it's time to properly acknowledge and accommodate these citizens and their right to speak freely. As a sign of goodwill, the democratic leaders should create Free Speech Zones that can accommodate the large number of protesters just like the last President did.

They're made of 8' high chainlink fencing with barbed wire at the top and are usually located a few blocks from the event. This way we can assure the protesters safety from the violent liberals.

user-pic

Touche!

user-pic

You're making too much sense. I think there's a law against making sense with regards to repuglicans.

user-pic

This is a long time coming. There have been too many cases in the last 10 -15 years of Right wing prats shouting down and intimidating people without a response from the left. Physical violence is deplorable but it is preferable to servitude and oppression. If your protest involves violating someone else's right to hear and be heard, you will eventually get punched. When the Brooks brothers riot took place during the Florida recount i was ashamed when I realized that no one in the Democratic Party thought to call the nearest Teamster local. The Party of Roosevelt ought not to lose street fights. As for the term labor thug that's just republican for peasant.

user-pic

Here is a clip of Chris Matthews going after a Freedomworks' spokesperson and calling him a fraud.

Pretty good stuff.

shooter,

I want you, the teabaggers, the birthers, the Limbaugh dittoheads, Newt Gingrich, Jim Inhofe, Jim DeMint, John Cornyn, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly to keep up the good work. Your side has been quite successful since the 2006 Elections.

These successful tactics and rhetoric should keep you on the glidepath to again winning both houses of Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012.

user-pic

This GOP effort to disrupt the healtcare townhalls are populated with people that have bought in to so much misinformation as to be completely ignorant of any of the bills under consideration. They have been fired up by Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity, the champions of lies and misinformtion. These guys can only appeal to the undereducated, non-reading, illinformed fools in society. Mostly they are angry people that have not done well financially themselves and are looking to blame others for their plight. They have become incited to become thugs. They respect no one. The should arrest them each and every time they step over the legal line. A few nights in jail and some healthy fines might make some of them cool off a little. Some of them would protest anything simply because we have a black President which they cannot accept. Who in their sane minds would want to bask in the light of these neandrathals?

user-pic

The guy with brown hair and white shirt who kept saying SEIU attacked the guy was one of the foul-mouthed, angry leaders of the mob who got within centimeters of my face while yelling "Fuck you!" over and over. He wanted to incite a riot and got a small one. I have no doubt SEIU staff are innocent. This cuff was based on the word of some very biased people. In the video, it looks like the SEIU guy is pushed backward or stumbles over someone.

user-pic

Eric: Regardless of the makeup of the people that elected the representative, that representative still works for every single resident of their congressional district. It helps TPM when you acknowledge pure facts instead of pumping hyperbole.

In Chicago we see this type of activity all the time where an alderman tries to pack the hall with their supporters, but it's too late. Word leaked out about the meeting and Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, Independents, heck everyone except those "in the know" get forced outside even though they were the first ones to arrive.

Some of these events are actual town halls where the elected official alerts their constituents of the various town halls they are attending so that residents can try to make the one nearest to them. If they want to screen entrance, just check IDs up against the Congressional database. Too intrusive? I think so, but it's about the only way you're going to talk the people you represent.
