Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), who is up fro re-election in 2010, says he will be able to address questions surrounding his having been implicated in the D.C. Madam prostitution scandal.

The Thibodaux Daily Comet asked Vitter how he would handle the matter, and Vitter gave them a response. "By very sincerely saying it was a serious sin in my past, 10 years ago, and asking for forgiveness beginning with the folks who were hurt the most by it," Vitter said. "So I think I've done that in a real straightforward way."

Back in 2007, Vitter publicly apologized for having committed a "serious sin," but did not specify exactly what was involved. Vitter's last call to the late D.C. Madam's call-girl operation reportedly occurred in 2001.

The Louisiana Democrats have already put out a reaction to it. "If David Vitter genuinely wants forgiveness, he should start with a full and honest confession," said Louisiana Dem spokesman Kevin Franck. "When he ran for Senate in 2004, David Vitter said allegations that he paid prostitutes for sex were 'absolutely and completely untrue' and now he says he's being straightforward. It's enough to make you wonder if Vitter is sorry because he embarrassed the people of Louisiana with his tawdry behavior or because he got caught."
