What Happened At The St. Louis Town Brawl?
So what exactly happened at the Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-MO) town hall event last night, in the St. Louis suburb of Mehlville, where six people were arrested outside after a confrontation between a Tea Party activist and some labor union guys? The picture is still murky. Here's a video that has circulated, appearing to show the Tea Party activist on the losing end of a fight, as well someone with SEIU who is on the ground:
The problem, however, is that a recording of a fight or an eyewitness account usually begins after the first punches get thrown, and people just begin to notice that something is going on. As such, we remain in the dark on what exactly happened.
Three people were arrested on suspicion of assault, two for interfering with the police and one for a peace disturbance -- including a reporter who the police believed was getting in the way of their effort to restore order.
For his part, the conservative activist who came out badly in this brawl -- indeed, he was treated at a hospital -- has identified himself as Kenneth Gladney, who claims he was attacked for being a black conservative while he was peacefully handing out signs that said "Don't Tread On Me." The local Tea Party organization has now announced that they'll be holding a new protest tomorrow -- right outside the local SEIU office.
Jim Hubbard, Carnahan's deputy communications director, made it clear to me that the altercation took place after the Congressman had already left. He also said that this event hadn't even been intended as a town hall on the health bill -- it was scheduled well in advance as a discussion on aging issues. "But unfortunately a lot of people showed up last night wanting to cause a disruption," said Hubbard, also adding: "But I think it's clear that there's a national effort by those who oppose health insurance reform to cause disruptions at these sorts of open forums."
TPM reader Michael Purdy, a science writer at the Washington University School of Medicine, said he came to the event in support of health care reform, but not as a directly participating activist. The fight broke out after he'd left, but he gave us an idea of just how stormy the interactions were between the Tea Party and the rest of the attendees. "For example, there was a guy who, when I was walking by with a health care reform sticker on, said 'Oh look, there goes a loser.'"
"There were elements of genuine hostility in the confrontations, but no violence yet," he also said. "Another teabagger said he was willing to recognize the Obama government 'for now,' but backpedaled when I confronted him about it."
A spokesman for the St. Louis County police could not comment beyond confirming that the county police were on the scene, made six arrests and will be applying for warrants next week, and at that time a court date will be set. All six people who were arrested were later released on their own recognizance. But the police report itself has not been approved or reviewed by the department's legal counsel. The investigation is still ongoing, and any citizens who witnessed it and/or had cameras are encouraged to come forward.
What's clear is that some sort of brawl happened, and this fellow Gladney clearly got the worst of it -- and the right-wing media is quite incensed. We'll see how things go from here.
Calls to the local SEIU, plus the state Democratic and Republican parties, were not returned.
Late Update: This post has been edited to make clear that the video shows two people on the ground. One of them appears to be with SEIU, while another could be Gladney.

Problematic. I'd like more information about exactly what happened, but SEIU has been leaning pretty hard on trying to make hay out of the apparently violent tenor of the right wing protests. Not really possible to make an argument like that if SEIU members are themselves behaving in a violent fashion...

That's a fairly judgmental assessment from someone who professes to want more info.

*shrug*
If SEIU members are acting in a violent fashion, as the TPM article implies was a possibility, this is a problem for SEIU's message. However it's not been demonstrated to me yet SEIU members were acting in a violent fashion.
Speaking of which, based on what does Kleefield say the confrontation was between Gladney and "some labor union guys"? The St. Louis Today article didn't specify anything like that. There are people with SEIU shirts in the video but I cannot tell if they're involved in the brawl or not. Am I missing something...?

Not really. The Tea Partyers' actions are unconstructive regardless of what SEIU members' response to them is. We don't know what led to this specific altercation but it's pretty clear that many of the Tea Partyers' actions are quite provocative, and I'm not surprised if some of their targets feel inclined to retaliate.

Wait a minute Eric,
Isn't the guy on the ground a SEIU man? He has a dark blue shirt on like the other SEIU people and he has the same sticker that says "We Can't Wait." He has on tan khaki slacks.
We see a guy in a dark shirt rubbing his shoulder. Isn't he the same guy who was on the ground? If so... that is not Kenneth Gladney.
How did you ascertain that the guy on the ground was Kenneth Gladney?

Okay, for a follow-up with info:
The guy on the ground in the dark blue shirt... where the video opens... he is a SEIU man. He's the man you see emerging a little later rubbing his shoulder.
At approximately 0:05 in the video, you will see on the right side another SEIU man who trips or something... and that guy in the brown polo who goes down too... that is Kenneth Gladley.
There are teabaggers or GOP operatives or whatever you want to call them there... the guy in the white polo with the "67" on the arm (Orlando is his name), Kenneth Gladley... he's the mouthy guy in this video who's in a brown polo and David Brown, Kenneth Gladley's attorney or friend or whatever, he's in the light blue dress shirt. White "67" polo dude, Kenneth Gladley in the brown polo and the light blue dress shirt attorney dude all interacted together in this video. They were "friends" and attended this townhall together according to info I received.
So, you posted that "this fellow Gladney clearly got the worst of it -- and the right-wing media is quite incensed...." when from appearances in that video... the SEIU guy got the worst of it and Kenneth just got tripped up with someone's feet (from what I could tell) and is claiming an assault.

One SEIU guy does pull down Gladley, right before he goes down himself, either tripping or just losing his balance after pulling Gladley down. But the first person on the ground at the beginning of the video is definitely an SEIU guy, with the skinny guy with a pony tail standing over him. It appears that the pony tail guy was the one beating first SEIU guy at the very start of the video, though it's hard to see for sure because it wasn't zoomed in at first. Of course none of this shows us who started the fight or who might have made the first harassing comments that pushed things over the edge. Either way, the whole thing is completely childish, and clearly wouldn't have happened if both sides had kept things respectful from the start.

Wow, let me get this straight. Someone astroturf deutcsh bank got in the face of some union guys who really believe in something, and he got his rear kicked? that's unbelievable. Hope he's got a good health care policy. Maybe he'll think twice the next time.

Gladley is claiming he is hurt, but from the video, obviously not bad enough to stop him from talking to the press to further his claims.
And now he wants donations to pay for his visit to the hospital (to which he took himself and was not transported by an ambulance), because he doesn't have a job.
Sort of points to the concept that the GOP are doing their part to help the economy by hiring unemployed people to go to rallies and hope they get hurt so they can get more money????
REALLY??????
Thus far, the MSM bit on this hard and fast without doing that silly little FACT CHECKER thingamabob!
