A new Rasmussen poll finds Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) trailing his Republican challengers, further corroborating other polls that have also shown Reid in serious danger.
Sue Lowden, who recently announced her resignation as state GOP chair and is expected to launch a campaign, has 50% to Reid's 40%. Former UNLV basketball player Danny Tarkanian, who has previously run unsuccessful races for state Senate and Nevada Sec. of State, has 50% to Reid's 43%. The margin of error is ±4.5%
The pollster's analysis says that the health care debate is not working well for Reid in his home state: "Most Nevada voters (52%) oppose the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats, while 45% favor it."

Not to be too crass about this, but I wonder who'd be next in line to be Speaker, should Reid not make it past 2010, assuming Dems retain a majority (which i do assume). Durbin?

Reid isn't speaker. He's majority leader. Next in line will be Durbin or Schumer. I love Durbin but I'm hoping for Schumer. He's the reason I have a Democratic senator in NC!

Mea culpa FreeRider - thanks for the correction.
Speaker of the Senate's more of a Canadian thing.
For which i also nominate Dick Durbin - cleaning up on both sides of the Lakes.

I can't say I would miss him, Durbin would make a much better majority leader.

Reid only needs one county to win...Clark county - that's were all the people live in Nevada. Since the cost of living is extremely high there and there's a serious slump in gambling as well as high bankruptcies and mortgage foreclosures, Lowden and Tark's boy have some serious obstacles to overcome. Besides, Clark county has a very big Hispanic and Black population and the city is heavily unionized on the Strip - each is a bane to republicans seeking office.

Chicken Harry has been playing it all wrong for a while. He thought endless compromises would make him a statesman or a deal maker, but the Right would never respect someone so weak and in doing so, he lost the Center and Left as well. No base, no respect, no chance.

Reid has a huge war chest as well. Not to mention the GOP will probably not really back his Republican challenger because Reid is the gift that keeps on giving to the Republicans.

Tark's a novelty candidate. They do it every few years hoping maybe dad's popularity at UNLV can translate into a win in Vegas. Lois would probably have been a better choice if they were serious but I imagine she didn't want to give up her council seat for what can only be described as a long shot. If anything Danny's presence (goin right into the Senate again eh Danny boy?) just shows the real problems the GOP in Nevada have.
When the campaign cranks up, Reid's got an ace in the hole for S. Nevada: he killed Yucca Mt. and upwards of 8 waste shipments a day crawling at 35 MPH through the spaghetti bowl. Watch for some water issues to come up in the next session. I just don't see him losing.
