Afghan Opium Production Down -- Due To Excess Supply
The Washington Post reports that a new U.N. report to be released today will show opium production in Afghanistan down sharply. However, this is due to the fact that supply of the drug has been so high for the past several years, that prices reached a ten-year low. "Overall, you could say we are now profiting from a fantastic market correction,"said Jean-Luc Lemahieu of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime.

When Stevens goes, another Catholic to the bench?
In the event, if I'm Breyer & Ginsburg, I might be a little worried.

A Supreme Court nomination would offer Republicans another opportunity to strut about with their guns and explain why they hate America (RHA) and particularly the dreaded two-sided coin that is democracy.
Don't get me wrong, when they win, it's fine. No argument. But when the other side wins, that's when they come out with their guns shouting people down at meetings with amazingly bizarre and asinine accusations. (Where is Sotomayor's birth certificate by the way?)

Obama should nominate Ellen Degeneres. She'd start every case with music and dancing, it would drive the right absolutely nuts and plus, she'd probably take it pretty seriously.
Okay, maybe not. But I still like the idea of floating the idea with the birther crowd just to get them riled.

And on the WaPo article. Opium production isn't "down sharply", opium cultivation is (the land area planted to poppies). Due to higher production per area, actual opium production is down "less dramatically" though the authors didn't feel the need to report that number.
They did, however, feel the need to prattle on endlessly about the Taliban (including a crack about them only being able to store so much opium in their caves). This is in spite of the fact that the Taliban represents maybe a quarter of the opium production in the country. The big producers are the Northern Alliance. You know, the people we put in charge of the place?
Stay classy WaPo and we'll stay ignorant.
