Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) finally explained yesterday why Democrats don't want her in office: They're scared she'll become the first female president.
"They want to make sure no women, no woman becomes president before a Democrat woman," Bachmann said, "and so they're doing everything they can to, I think, sabotage women like Sarah Palin, perhaps women like myself, or similarly situated women, to make sure that we don't have a prominent national voice."
Bachmann was speaking on Mike Gallagher's radio show.
Bachmann recently said she would run for president, but only if God told her to.

Being from Minnesota and working with quite a few of her constituents my initial reaction to Michelle's zaniness was not very positive. We had to deal with her before she made the National stage, but now the nuttier she gets the more I like it. I think that she's loosing people. All she really has left is her wingnut base. They are a lot smaller group then the media would have you believe.

I know what you are saying. And no, I am not worried about her chances regarding presidency, that just won't happen. I guess I've just had enough -- I'm just so sick and tired of all the nutjob nonsense those wingnuts keep spouting day in day out about critical issues. I dare say, all opinions are not equal -- all those pieces of wingnuts crap do not deserve equal attention, equal airtime. Quite frankly, Bachmann should be flat-out ignored by the media. And yet she keeps getting what she doesn't deserve AND in some way or other derails debates of important issues (no real, serious policy discussion/analysis/reporting in the media). And god you can see that attention whore LOVES that. My expectation about the MSM was already set so low, I though it couldn't get lower. Still, it sickens me.
Sorry for ranting.

Unless Sarah Palin wants to be the nominee, in which case we'd be in favor of co-Nominees. And we really want David Vitter and Mark Sanford to be in that ticket too, just to show how balanced we are!

They should all run, then they should all lock themselves in somewhere, with all the delegates and agree to pray to God to provide them with their next leader, AND agree not to come out until they reach consensus.
That way, they'll either go the way of the Donner Party, or they'll actually listen to what God has to say, and we still win, 'cuz I'm pretty sure Jesus would be a progressive Democrat. You know, care for the poor, the elderly, the sick, renounce wealth, do unto others, stuff like that.

That's actually brilliant, although of course there's no chance it would play out that way.
But it does give one a droll vision of the Republican primary rhetoric of, oh, late 2011:
MB: God told me to run!
SP: No, God told me to run!
MS: No, Gold told me to run! In a prayer meeting at the C Street House!
And so it would go. After the first round, it gets more interesting.
What would happen after the primaries are over would be anyone's guess.

It's not just that they went away, but they converted as well. A lot of the conservatives currently in the Senate have always been conservative, but 10 or 15 years ago only a few (like Jesse Helms) would have actively promoted freeper-type blatant lies like the death panel stuff. Plus they didn't filibuster every piece of legislation. Now we've got people like Grassley, who used to be a "mainstream conservative", pulling that crap.

There are no more "normal" Republicans. Most of the moderate, sane Republicans left the party in 2006, the rest in 2008. "Normal" Republicans are now known as "Blue Dog Democrats" (at least that what they call themselves; I call them "Vichy Democrats").
Basically the Republican Party no longer has a right-wing fringe. The Republican Party is all right-wing fringe. No one who is both sane and has any shred of self-respect is willing to self-identify as a Republican at this point.

Then when the kid's a whimpering, sobbering, exhausted little lump all curled up in a ball, the smart parent calmly walks back onto the scene, takes Junior by the hand and whisper gently, "c'mon darling, time to go home." I think the issue here is that you are equating a widely accepted and broadly focused statement (the idea presented in his statement was a fairly strong piece of Clinton's campaign) with Bachmann's loony and paranoid statement.
Democrats don't want her to become president because they want the first female president to be one of their own? How about democrats don't want her to become president because she's a republican. Or because she's bat shit crazy.
Her statement would rank better on the laugh test if it weren't so ironic. She's a member of a party which is dominated by old white males and with a strong history of bigotry but it's those misogynistic dems that are blocking her because she's a woman. Right.
And whoever suggested that the other candidate wouldn't affect the outcome of an election? That's kind of like saying the other boxer has no influence on the outcome of the fight.
You're weird.

How about democrats don't want her to become president because she's a republican. Or because she's bat shit crazy." I will accept that if you will accept "The reason that Republicans didn't want Obama to become president wasn't because Obama was bi-racial. How about Republicans didn't want Obama because he's a democrat. Or because they don't like his politics."

Stiggs
September 4, 2009 6:28 PM in reply to The Reluctant Conspiracy Theorist
I would accept that if the arguments being made against Obama pertained to him being a democrat or things that were real. The fact that so many of Obama's critics cling to claims which are demonstrably false (he's a secret muslim, he hates white people, he isn't really an american, he wants to kill old people, he's going to take away everybody's guns, he's trying to indoctrinate our children with a socialist agenda, etc.) is indicative of a willful ignorance on the part of those repeating these charges.
The claims stink of sour grapes and beg the question - what is the source of this dislike and mistrust which can't be openly discussed? To overlook the racism issue would be self-delusional but to stop there would also be foolish.
I think a significant factor is the right's disillusionment with the GOP. The Bush years did a lot to drive people away from the republican party, however years of vilifying the left prevents many of those people from embracing democrats. In order to deal with the cognitive dissonance of not voting for the party which has proven to be the better steward of our country, they create fantasy scenarios to justify their choices.
A strongly supportive piece of evidence for this theory is how the birther / tenther / tea party movements built on the foundations laid by the 9/11 truth movement. People who believe that Bush and company killed 3,000 americans in order to consolidate power needed reasons to not vote for Obama and the far-fetched conspiratorial theories abounded.

And I stand by my snotty and sarcastic response. You did a poor job of explaining why Obama, making a comment that voters might prefer a more "conventional" candidate, is similar to Michelle Bachmann talking about how Democrats are doing everything they can to prevent her from running for president. Where is the similarity? Obama was referring to himself as the "other". As an African American candidate named Barack Hussein Obama, that seems like a pretty good description. Michelle Bachman was making an absurd statement detached from reality about how the opposition political party is trying to sabotage her.
What's the similarity here?

It got worse, much worse...
What she said following the sentence quoted above was:
"But the thing is, the people in our country, they don't care who the voice is, they just want someone, they want to know that someone is speaking out for them against what will certainly bring about the destruction of our great country if we continue to go down the Obama path. "
I just ran that sentence through my Handy-Dandy English-BIRD translator (BIRD = Bigots In Republican Disguise) and the translation came out as:
"Holy Christ-on-a-cracker! America! Wake UP! Don't you realize we just elected a NI66ER as President? Quick! Someone get a rope!"

Hey, Michelle. Bob McDonnell in Virginia says that as a working woman, you are "detrimental" to the family. Also, if you're using contraception, you are "illogical".
But hey, it's the Dems that want to keep a good woman down.

Again, not for the first time and certainly not the last - ignorance is the current commodity of the fundamental right. keep in the darkness - they actually fear the good news found in Isaiah - a people walking in darkness will see a great light - - - - -

"Bachmann: Dems Are Sabotaging Me Because I Might Become President"
Actually, it's the words that come out of her mouth that are sabotaging her. The words that come out of her mouth are things that have been told to her by God. Ergo, God is a Democrat?!?!

Last week sometime I had a moment of insight and glimpsed what may attract people to the Bachmans and Palins of the world. They really believe themselves and nothing, nothing stops them or slows them down. It's tantalizingly easy ... if you don't like something it's wrong; if you do like something, it's good and true. You don't have to engage in any introspection or heavy thinking to figure out what is what. And they never, ever, ever lose their (ill-placed) self-confidence. To some people, "certainty" is a very attractive quality - part of GWB's success. And these women are surely certain, in a way that Rush and Bill and Glenn can't even match. They say the things the say because that's their job and they like saying those things, but you do get the feeling that in random moments they know it's a lot of slanted bulls**t. These ladies BELIEVE - and they are certain - and they are spunky - and they never give up. ----------- My ability to see it died out about a nanosecond later and all that combination of traits started giving me the usual sick chills. But I think they do make some people -- perhaps people who feel powerless and defeated (and who don't believe in using their brains!)-- feel a lot better about themselves. Personally, however, I still keep waiting for Allen Funt and "Candid Camera" to pop out, with the audience laughing their head off because we really believed for a moment that these people could be elected public officials.

Michelle's doing a great job not spilling the beans on her becoming Queen of Earth one day. It's true - God showed her in a dream, a friend of a friend told me. So you see, when she talks about being President she's just being coy but she can't hide her excitement - 'cause she knows she's going to rule it all in the end.

Jon Stewart showed a great clip with her on Hannity. Here's the back and forth:
If you want to see an absolute classic by Stewart, you can watch the whole piece at the Daily Show website. It's a beautiful synopsis of the frothing right. Bachman comes in around 2:45.

Sweetheart, we're not afraid you're gonna be president...we're afraid your fragile little mind is gonna snap for good one day, and you'll walk into the House chamber wearing a C4 girdle to "save" us all from the "menaces" the voices in your head tell you about.

So, a not completely rhetorical question. How, exactly, does god call people like Bachmann?
I'm thinking the snark along the lines of skype. But, I presume that there's some other mechanism. What do people like her report as "God telling them to run for congress?" Is it a feeling of "rightness" when you think about the issue? Or are there signs? like campaign fliers appearing on your car?

Oh, it's an ugly thing! First, he invites them to a visitation, right, and what screwball, bible-thumping beauty queen's gonna say no, right?
Then, he plies them with demon rum! It's a terrible thing to watch, really!

"God" appears on a cloud in the living room of the person to whom "He" is going to speak.
That person asks, "Who are YOU!?"
"He" answers, "Why, I'm 'God'! Doncha know 'Me'!?"*
_____
*Echoes of Al Jolson down on one knee singing "Mammy".
_____
The person then says, "PROVE it!"
So "God" shows his passport.
But, that not being good enough, the person demands, "Where's your birth certificae -- and I mean the LONG form!?"
"God" performs a miracle then and there, making up a long form birth certificate, and hands it to the person.
"OK, you are an American citizen," the person responds, "Now tell me who's conspiring against me."

All I'll say is this: In America any citizen (natural born, original birth certificate required now apparently) can become president. But that doesn't mean some people should be allow anywhere near the nuclear missile launch codes.

"God" is well know as being a knee-slapping practical joker. If "He" told her to run, "He" probably foresees her falling on her face.

The center left (e.g. the mainstream blogosphere like here) needs to debate the greens and the true left (e.g. Z Magazine authors). Conservatives, blue dogs, neoliberals, neocons, and their creation the birthers have nothing whatsoever useful to say and should be ushered firmly from the stage of history.
To be sure they can be quite entertaining when they're not actively destroying things.
