Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) spoke yesterday to the right-wing Independence Institute, the Colorado Independent reports, and she called on conservative to really come together in the fight against President Obama on health care.
"What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing," said Bachmann. "This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn't pass."
The sanguinary rhetoric continued. "Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom," she said. "And we may never be able to restore it if we don't man up and take this one on."
Bachmann also denounced a system under which some Americans pay half their income in taxes: "It's nothing more than slavery."

Actually, she sounds like she's in desperate need of some kind of health care; psychological help before the slit, emergency room after the slit (if the psychology doesn't work, of course.)
But then she'd have to see a shrink, and I perceive that peabrain can't be shrunk any further.

The imaginary inhabitants of the Real America that exists in her and the other teabaggers' heads, of course. Poor buggers. Freedoms being taken away, one by one, wretchedly oppressed by the cruel taxes imposed by the brutal, subhuman invading brown hoards who have seized control of their beloved country. Time to water the tree of liberty with their patriot blood, evidently, as their ideal, Jefferson would have wanted. (Now there was a guy who knew how to deal with the Brown Menace.)

12.4 fica
2.9 medicare
28 federal (35% is max, but fica goes to 0 by then)
9.3 CA state tax
= 52.6 / (100+(12.4+2.9)/2) = 48.8%
pretty close (at least marginally) before counting consumption and property taxes.

Storm, while the highest rate is in fact about 50% I think Bachmann was referring to paid taxes. As far as I've ever heard, the tax rate is not actually paid by high income earners since they have so many deductions. The highest 'effective tax rate' may be more in the range of 30%. http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/88xx/doc8885/EffectiveTaxRates.shtml

The effective federal income-tax rate on the top 1% of earners was 22.5% in 2007 -- which was about four percentage points lower than in 1987, the first year the Reagan tax overhaul was in effect.
Which of course raises the question: Why was Reagan such a crazed socialist?

You're not too far off, but let's not forget that state and local income tax and property taxes are federally deductible. That alone reduces effective CA state income tax to about 6.7% for the taxpayer in the 28% federal bracket. And all these are marginal rates, of course.
Consumption taxes, FICA and Medicare are quite regressive, too.

Hmmm, storm. My husband and I made about 100,000 last year.
Our fed tax was about $17,000 (we were, as is everyone, taxed on the adjusted gross income, not the gross). So 28% was actually 17%. In addition, our CA taxes were about $4,000: same deal as fed. Let's behonest here.

Geez, no wonder people spend all their time so mad about taxes. No one in this whole damn country except lawyers and accountants seems to understand how marginal tax rates work.
If you're in the 28% bracket, you're not paying 28% of your gross. Most people get that. What they don't get is that you're also not paying 28% of your adjusted gross. Instead (this year, if you're single), you pay 10% of your AGI between 0 and 8,350, 15% on AGI between 8,351 and 33,950, 25% on AGI between 33,951 and 82,250, and 28% only on income over $82,251 (up to 171,550 where the next bracket kicks in).
If you are single and your AGI is at the top end of the 28% bracket, $171,550, your effective tax rate is about 24.3%. That's the most anyone (who's filing single this year) will ever pay if they're in the 28% bracket. The less deep you are into a bracket, the lower your effective rate.
And if you're in the tippy-top bracket it's practically guarenteed that your effective rate is going to be reduced by capital gains or losses, not to mention the ten zillion other ways you have of reducing your taxes up there.

The more important figure when figuring taxes is not how much tax is paid by any one individual, it is how much is left over to spend on themselves.
A person making 250,000 per year in a 25% tax bracket is paying $62,500 in taxes. They still have $187,500 to spend on living high.
A person earning $50,000 in a 0% tax bracket, while paying no income taxes, still has only $50,000 to spend on living high.
What is "fair"?

Hey, I know she totally invited the suicide jokes, but maybe we shouldn't encourage a discourse that urges congresspeople to commit suicide. That way, the next time some crazy person starts talking about how they'd like to see the President dead, they can't point fingers at "the left" for doing the same thing.
I know that Bachmann comes from an entirely different planet than you and I, but we should probably mock her within reason, and not with jokes about death. I'm sure, like me, most of you are angry about the pastor from AZ and from the sports columnist who made the Nancy Pelosi assassination joke, so maybe we should hold ourselves to a higher standard.
Just a thought.

Well, given that Ms. Bachmann herself is the one who is suggesting that opponents of health care reform should "slit our wrists," I don't think the comparison is very apt. Telling Michelle to kill herself is one thing; when she suggests that she might do it herself, however, the only reasonable response is mockery.

Mockery is one thing, but there are numerous comments on this page telling Bachmann, in no uncertain terms, to kill herself. Aren't we supposed to be above that? What makes these comments "jokes" and other death-threat humor a serious issue to be addressed?
I just think we should be careful, because I think any dialogue like this is harmful to the perception of "liberals" by the rest of the country. It just becomes fodder for wingnuts.

If Bachmann offs herself in some overzealous suicide pact, how many of her acolytes do you suppose would be willing to pick up the knife and follow suite? I'm guessing that any rational person left on her side of the divide would run far, far away from her insanity. Anyone left to defend or justify her wackiness would be immediately ostracized from civilized humanity. Joan of Arc she ain't and having her cabal fall apart with her self-imposed exit (stage right) sounds good to me.

The difference is that we're not making threats, we're jokingly agreeing with a suggestion she herself made. Because we're not threatening violence, it's a valid form of expression.
Is it macabre? Perhaps. Lacking in class? You could make an argument. But it's certainly not a serious issue in the same vein as people suggesting, implicitly or otherwise, that violent overthrow of the government is appropriate or that the president should die.

Hey, on second thought, if she lives through the wrist-slitting, she has got Federal Insurance, which is like a golden policy. My mother has it because my father retired from the Post Office 0 years ago. It is PERFECT! She had Medicare, but no medication problems because she was in the Federal System. She never had a co-pay more than $10.
The Federal Employees and Congress, and who knows who else get tax-supplemented health care that is beyond the wildest dreams of most of us.
OK, Republicans! Man UP! Give the entire country what our federal enclave gets (including all the tax-payer subsidies), and we'll see if that works. Guess what? It won't because the feds get way more tax subsidies than anyone even imagines!
Let people pay their way, with a government-sponsored system.
