During a House floor speech on Monday night, Rep. Michele Bachmann gave a dire warning: That President Obama has already begun efforts to limit our energy usage from cars and home heating and air conditioning -- and our food consumption is next:

"President Obama said we can't eat as much food as we want and think the rest of the world will be okay about that -- as if that matters to freedom-loving Americans," said Bachmann. "Well, we just heard last week that the Federal Government now under the Obama administration is calling for a re-ordering of America's food supply. What's that going to mean? Now will the White House decide how many calories we consume, or what types of food we consume?"

She spoke to Rep. Steve King (R-IA): "You're from an agriculture State, I'm from an agriculture state. My farmers are very concerned about this."

One would think incessant babbling like this would just spotlight how intellectually bankrupt the Republican party is. Instead, however, the result seems to be a renormalization of crazy. Crazy has gone mainstream. There was a time when newspaper editors and TV news producers would either refuse to give coverage to this kind of nuttiness or at least identify it as such. Now it's repeated alongside more rational viewpoints as though it was equally valid. Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, the teabaggers and all the rest need to be called out publicly and I sure don't see who's going to do it.

Up next: Republicans claim the Obama will make nation eat its vegetables before having dessert; GHWB quoted as saying, "I'm still not eating that fucking broccoli!"

At this rate, we might as well start getting our news from The Onion.

The only positive is that you can only cry that the government is coming to kill you and all of your family (I know, gross generalization, but basically that's the idea) and have it not happen so many times before even the uninvolved low-attention span masses start to think you're absolutely crazy. Can you imagine what the reaction is going to be in 2011 when this stuff is still getting peddled around and America as we know it still hasn't ended? The biggest advantage these lunatics have right now is fear of the unknown which won't be around for much longer.

Spot on.... Also, it takes an awful lot of energy to fuel hate, especially if the target won't hate back.

Thank you! This is just what I have been thinking.

As a related point, now that they have, in his first nine months, compared Obama to Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Satan, and now the anti-Christ, where exactly do they go from here? They've used up every single symbol of evil that exists in nine months. Now what? Keep saying the exact same things for the next 3 years?

Similarly, they have already repeatedly called Obama a Marxist, Communist, Socialist, fascist terrorist who is not an American citizen. Again, whither now? It seems to me they have shot their wad early. There just aren't enough bad words to last anywhere near four years at the rate they are going through them.

The only thing I can think of that is left (and I have tried, really) is to finally proclaim once and for all, that BARACK OBAMA IS NOT HUMAN!!!!1! "Show us the DNA!" "Where's the genome?" Why does he refuse to prove he is human?

I wish I were kidding.

Obama didn't say I couldn't eat all the food I wanted, but my mother often did.

Why does Michelle Bachmann want the American people to become obese?

God, I would absolutely love if Obama made us eat less. But I would settle for agricultural subsidies being redirected from giant industrial farming operations to small sustainable farms. Rather than using tax dollars to fund Americans getting fat, sick and dead by giving hugely unfair advantages to the corporations which already have size on their side, use it to fund local, fresh and healthy produce and meat by supporting something everyone professes to love (the small, independently owned farm).

We should have realized that we were on the wrong path when we had to figure out how much poison we wanted on the things we eat and farmers ceased to produce food, instead producing the feedstock for industrial chemical operations.

God, she is such a loon! She really seems unable to comprehend or correctly assess anything she sees or hears. Her gift for twisting reality borders on magical!

But as crazy as she is, who are these people that elected her?!

Michele, weren't you the one encouraging your followers to fast and pray? It looks like they'll have it easy for the first part of that. So, what's the problem?

Wasn't it Rachel Maddow who called her the Emily Litella of politics? "What's all this I hear about violins on television?"

Here I thought Bachmann was just a deranged bible-thumper. It turns out she's an utter dolt on top of it.

I wish I didn't live in her district in Minnesota.  Teh stoopid hurts, from east of St. Paul, gerrymandered all the way to St. Cloud.  This is all ex-Governor ex-wrestler Jesse Ventura's fault; he helped set up this district in order to help out independent candidates.  Instead, he created a monster.

Um, Michele sweetie, I heard that they're only going to restrict the food supply of Republican voters. Oh, but if you get this nifty "666" bar code tattoo on the back of your neck, you'll go right to the head of the food distribution line.

I think I may have out-crazied her, but I'm not 100% certain. After all, tomorrow is another day
