In an interview with Jeffrey Brown on PBS, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) referred to the current protests on health care as a "modern-day political rebellion in America," and quoted Thomas Jefferson to say that rebellion is a good thing -- but it should be done in a civil way:

Boehner: And so this conversation that's underway is healthy for our democracy. It was Thomas Jefferson 220 years ago who said, "A little rebellion now and then is good for our democracy."

Brown: Right, but "rebellion" is a charged word, of course, because the rebellion back then was a serious matter.

Boehner: It was. But having Americans engaged in this public debate is healthy. And I would hope that it would continue, but continue in a civil way.

To be exact, Jefferson's famous quote was regarding Shays' Rebellion, an uprising in the 1780's by rural Massachusetts farmers against the confiscation of their lands, when they were unable to pay their debts to the business elites in Boston. Jefferson argued in a letter to James Madison that the rebels should only face a mild, nominal punishment:

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.

Oh please. Say it with gusto:

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. ... God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion; what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." --Thomas Jefferson

Come back in twenty years, Boner.

Everytime I hear a wingnut quote that, I have an urge to ask, "So, you wanna go first?"

It's a source of unceasing wonderment to me how ideologues in this country are invariably convicned convinced that whatever they're doing is good for democracy, no matter how destructive or egregious their conduct.

I don't think they care about democracy at all. They just "want their country back" . Boehner said so. I am paraphrasing, but he said these folks are afraid the country they know won't be there for their kids. That is code for the blacks and browns are taking over.

I think it's important to frame this thinking as we go forward:

We can begin with two principles, I urge, which we hold to be self-evident:

1) Boehner is a misanthrope.

2) Boehner is a pscyho.

Well, if John Boehner is such a fan of a little rebellion every now and then, nobody is stopping him from picking up a gun himself and charging towards the nearest military post. Walk the walk, you know?

And to think, with such erudite and well thought responses as these, Republicans would look down on the left.
Heh.

"A Little Rebellion Now And Then Is Good"

And a little history -- especially misunderstood and distorted -- can be very bad. Shays rebellion was one of the principal precipitants of the Constitutional convention. Jefferson was in the distinct minority of the Founding Fathers in minimizing the event, likely because he was in France when it occurred.

Hey jackass, "rebellion" is NOT a synonym for democratic engagement. Don't pretend you just want people to be engaged and then call for rebellion against the US Government. We aren't stupid, we know what you are doing. Hell, even your dumbass base understands that much.

I would love to see a serious attempt at armed rebellion from the tea baggers. They seem to think that because they have guns they could pull it off. It would be crushed.

Just as long as the GOP isn't in power when it happens, eh John?

Johnboy, it ain't rebellion you guys are engaging in and agitating for so much as plain ol' obstruction, albeit with amped-up rhetoric. Now, if you want to really engage in true rebellion, be my guest, because I for one would love to see you and your ilk rounded up and incarcerated like the cheap petty criminal terrorist sympathizers you are at heart.

suggesting that this tea party crap is anything but sour grapes and sore-loserism gives it far too much credit.

we JUST had an election. the party that trounced the other party is attempting to do what it promised voters it would do if elected. none of this warrants any sort of 'political rebellion' even if that were what it is. but it isn't even that. it's just a temper tantrum that the right is throwing because it can't keep getting it's way after LOSING elections.

now, i would have some sympathy for the republicans if the dems had just shut them out of the policy process (as the republicans did to the dems after winning the slimmest control of congress). ham-fisted majoritarian bullying is not good for the democratic process and doesn't actually produce good policy.

but the dems have actually negotiated in good faith. they've even bent over backwards further than they were obligated to. baucus' gang of six gave the republicans an equal seat at the table when their numbers didn't actually entitle them to it. did the republicans use that opportunity to help draft a bipartisan bill? no. they have decided that it's better to play politics as obstructionists while pretending at being the victims of 'dems run amok'.

Johnny, "And I would hope that it would continue, but continue in a civil way."

I would civil you Johnny lad, a bar of soap in a sock is about as civil as I would get.. I imagine that I would have a sore arm, a soft bar of soap and an appetite. You, Johnny, should have a head that would be on the soft side, a new outlook on life and a thankfulness to what ever gawd you believe in, that I didn't kill your sorry ass....

Just this old Chief's 2 cents
