Boehner To Vote 'No' On Resolution Disapproving of Wilson's "You Lie!" Incident

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has released a statement, saying that he will oppose the Democrats' expected motion to admonish Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) for his "You lie!" outburst during President Obama's speech to Congress last week:

Rep. Wilson has apologized to the President, and the President accepted his apology. Last Thursday, Speaker Pelosi said that she believed it was time to move on and discuss health care. I couldn't agree more, and that's why I plan to vote 'no' on this resolution. Instead of pursuing this type of petty partisanship, we should be working together to lower costs and expand access to affordable, high-quality health coverage on behalf of the American people.

So the situation is now clear: Democrats will continue to pile on Wilson, while Republicans will circle their wagons and defend Wilson -- who is, of course, the new hero of the GOP grassroots. And for his part, Wilson will probably keep on doing his thing, if his Fox News Sunday appearance was any indication.

This sets the precedent. Heckle the President in front of 30 million viewers and however many else via the news coverage and apologize privately. Increase your exposure by going on all of the wingnut talk shows, and have your outburst complicity supported by your leadership.

Can't wait for the State of the Union Address...

You ain't seen nothing yet. It's sinking lower and lower and Repugs are degenerating to a state where they are too afraid to call out their fellow neanderthals for any misbehavior, which inevitably is becoming a race to the bottom. How long before a Repug just hollers out, "Shut up, Ni**er!" in Congress or at a rally or on Fox news. How long until one of their barely functioning, misguided lemmings does something dangerous and harmful.

This little acty by Wilson, and Boehner here, will seem Mickey Mouse by the end of the Obama administration. I guarantee it.

And that Obama as Joker image we see in posters now reminds me a little too much not of the latest Batman movie but Spike Lee's Bamboozled. It's 21st century black face, and they have it on parade now. Sickening, and it's only just begun...

Majority Leader John Boehner and other House Republican leaders were quite open about their determination to force a vote that would alternately be used to attack Democrats as unpatriotic or expose them as hypocrites.

Late Breaking News: Sens. Baucus and Conrad have just offered their heartfelt apologies to Rep. Wilson for the evil Democrats who are expressing their disapproval of Wilson's shouting out "You lie" at the president on the floor of the House. They are also moving to enact legislation that will bar Democrats from expressing disapproval at anything that Republicans do, regardless of whether current House or Senate rules, or state or federal laws, have been broken.

I say fuck decorum. In fact, let's up the ante. How about if the Dems just shout down any Republican that gets up to speak on the House floor, at any time. And then before they get a chance to return fire, up the ante again. Start breaking the furniture apart and whacking the Republicans with table legs. Smash chairs over their heads. And don't apologize.

Seriously, when and where does this bullshit end? The Republicans continue on with the air of entitlement that the previous administration had, the attitude that laws and rules or only meant for other people, and that Republicans should never ever have to pay the consequences for anything they do. What a bunch of goddam babies.

Umm, I can't think of better language to criticize the behavior of Wilson, Boehner and the right in general. Isn't it funny how effective Republicans have been at taking the charges that should be leveled against them and directing it at those they oppose. Wait, funny isn't the right word...

When I wonder whether Congress has become as undecorous as ever, I stop and remind myself that a Senator once paralyzed an opponent in the hall of that institution by beating him with a cane.

There's an interesting aftermath to that reported in the Wikipedia article on Preston Brooks (the South Carolina Congressman who attacked Sen. Sumner).

After the beating, another Congressman from New England, Anson Burlingame, denounced Brooks on the floor of the House as a coward. Brooks challenged him to a duel and Burlingame accepted. The traditional rules of dueling gave the challenged party the right to choose the weapon and the time and place; Burlingame chose rifles, a weapon with which, as an experienced deer hunter, he had a reputation as a deadly shot. Brooks subsequently backed out of his own challenge, ostensibly because he was afraid of being murdered on his way to the chosen dueling grounds (Burlingame had chosen a site on the Canadian side of Niagra Falls to skirt anti-dueling laws in the US), but I think he actually managed to show the truth of Burlingame's original denunciation.

It is probably also worth mentioning that Sumner eventually returned to the Senate where he was one of the voices pushing hardest during the Civil War to abolish slavery as a means of weakening the Confederacy, and after the war fought to establish civil rights for the newly freed slaves.

Brooks died in 1857 of the croup.

Let's speculate that this happened in 2005 and it was a Democrat who shouted at Bush.

Fox News, talk radio, Redstate, would be screaming at the top of their lungs how disrespectful Democrats are to the office of the President and this is a sign of how low they have sunk. The Dem in question would be forced to recant and apologize numerous times and would incur the wrath of a Congressional reprimand of the highest order. Democrats from coast to coast would quickly toss him/her under the bus, agreeing with their Republican counterparts about how rude and shameless it is to break the rules of Decorum, no matter how you might personally feel.

But, since it's a Republican who did the yelling to a Democratic president, he's now a hero, thumbing his nose at the rules of the House. Because Obama made him do it. It's not his fault. Really.

"House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said, 'Democratic leaders must make a choice today: Either embrace the character assassination tactics Moveon.org has leveled against the four-star general leading our troops in the fight against al Qaeda, or denounce it as disgraceful.'

'Gen. Petraeus and the other commanders in the U.S. Armed Services have dedicated their lives to defending the very freedom that enables MoveOn.org the right to free speech. I support that right, but I find the way they have chosen to exercise it today to be disrespectful and downright reprehensible,' Boehner said in a statement." Enough rope sums it up, I think.

If Dems keep their shit together and act like adults in the face of this circus (hopefully, is this possible?) then the repugs will hang themselves...not with their small base, but with the independents that really matter come voting time.

I think the real question is, and i'm almost afraid to ask it quite frankly, who are the real Dem leaders in the Senate and the House and when are they going to start acting like leaders. Repugs would hang themselves a lot sooner if we had some backbone and conviction on the hill.

The rules that Joe Wilson broke were the House's own rules -- either change them or enforce them.

This is between Wilson and the House, not only Wilson and the President.

Wilson's temper tantrum and childish inability to control himself reflects is an insult to the rules of the House for which he has never apologized.

Totally agree. I despise what he said but he did apologize to the President, sort of. Besides that, his actions were disrepectful of the House and will set a precedent. Lack of action on the part of House leadership will also set a precedent. This cannot be allowed by either political party.

Additionally, anyone remember how many times they wanted Clinton to apologize and all the times they said he didn't do it sincerely enough? Repus make me want to.............

I, too, am in complete agreement with you on that. Wilson's outburst was an offense against the House and all of its members just as much as it was an offense against the president, who was, after all, a guest of the Congress. (When the president addresses a joint session of Congress, he appears at the invitation of the Congress itself. He does not just announce that he intends to give an address and demand that they show up. Behaving rudely to someone who is there at your invitation is normally considered very bad form.)

Really? This is what we're going to go to the mat over?

Can someone explain why the Democrats always pick the wrong fights to dig in for? Joe Wilson is an insignificant little prick. I think most Americans recognize that. But pretty soon, this is going to sound like nothing more than whining. And in the end, all it will do is distract from the real debate. It's not the outburst that's important...it's the fact that Wilson was WRONG in what he said that really matters.

Could we maybe save a little energy for something worth fighting for...please?

It seems to me that civil discourse is worth a bit of fight.

Wilson is going to use this to try to raise money no matter what the Democrats in the House do, so they may as well stand up for principle. If the Republicans want to go on record saying that it is OK to break the institution's rules of decorum, let them.

from Maureen Dowd's column:
Congressman James Clyburn: "'In South Carolina politics, I learned that the olive branch works very seldom,” he said. “You have to come at these things from a position of strength. My father used to say, ‘Son, always remember that silence gives consent.’ ”

I don't know that I agree that the olive branch rarely works, (although I'll believe it of South Carolina politics!) but I do agree with slb that "civil discourse is worth a bit of a fight."

Boehner may vote "no" - all the Republicans may vote "no" ..... but that's not going to be a vote they will be happy to have hanging over them. It's THEIR institution that was disrespected, not just the President ... and someday it may be their President, as well.

The insult for which he still owes an apology is to the Congress and, by extension, the People. In fact, Pres. Obama has to deal with all sorts of abuse and simply ignore it if he's to get the job done. It's Congress and by extension the People who received a much more fundamental and potentially damaging blow - to the very institutions on which we all depend. Not, of course, that Boehner knows or cares about anything other than "beating the Democrats." ---- Of course his motive may be more personal. What if only he and other leaders voted for censure and their "troops" didn't follow?

It would seem the president could once again go to his "let's have a beer together and discuss the issue" mode after which there would be a short joint news conference clarifying Congressman Wilson's error. Perhaps Congressman Wilson could even be the person stating his comments were in error. It seems this is a win - win. If the Congressman refuses to attend he loses, if he attends he has to admit his error.
About the senate bill with the "gang of six" - How can the Democrats ever make progress on controlling the agenda (in spite of their majority) when they continue to act as if the Republicans won the election? It is time to put their agenda forward professionally and forcefully
