House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) appeared on the Bill Press radio show this morning, and said that Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-SC) written apology for having shouted "You lie!" at President Obama wasn't good enough.

Instead, Clyburn says Wilson should go to the well of the House -- the same place where he made the insult -- and give a public apology there.

"That's a cowardly way to do it," Clyburn said of the written statement. "He ought to man up and go down to the well of the House and say, I acted with a lack of decorum the last evening, and I apologize to the President of the United States, and I apologize to my colleagues in both bodies, and I apologize to the people of South Carolina for having done so.

I hope they censure him!!

He deserves it, and it needs to be done to preserve decorum. Let future Congresspeople know what response awaits this type of behavior.

Need to get away from this utter nonsense of demanding apology from Repugs.

We should celebrate their cowardice and relentless stupidity as what it is: emblematic of the Republican Party.

Joe Wilson Exposes Prez as 'Liar', Wife 'Fair Game'

Reader News (fictional) has learned overnight that Rep. Joe Wilson (Wingnut-SC) was retained by the CIA to hospital ERs 'in or around a US international border that is not Canada' to determine if indeed illegal alien 'Saddam Sanchez and his family sought to acquire $500 worth of medical care from America'.

Mr. Wilson had completed half of a rough draft of his to-be-published op-ed "What I Found in El Paso" but decided shouting "you lie" at the President would be "easier than all that writing stuff."

In further developments, the White House has secretly determined that Wilson's wife, a NOC for the South Carolina Republican Women's Auxiliary is now "fair game."

How would it go down by the way if this Beck booster got up mid-speech, walked over to the podium during the President's address, unzipped his pants, and took a leak in his direction?

He'd say he disagreed with the President's statement and unfortunately a combination of his emotions and his kidneys got the best of him? And apologize by phone, to be hailed in the evening to be hailed as a hero on Fox and the Hate Shows the next day and lifted up on their shoulders?

This guy needs to be nailed to the cross for this. Period.

South Carolina is incapable of maintaining a corruption free self-government and unable to comply with the basic rules of civil conduct in the US Congress. Reinstitute Reconstruction in S.C. now! Rescind the votes of the S.C. delegates to the US Congress. The President should appoint an interim Governor to replace Sanford until such time as the good people of S.C. are proved capable of self-government and giving constructive contribution to the commonweal.

We have our eyes on you, Georgia, next.

Oh come on, now...we're South Carolina. We exist to make the rest of of the country, if not comfortable, at least more clearly able to make a case that they're better.

This is what we expect from our 'representatives.' Embarrassment, ridicule, the scorn of all thinking people. Wilson is the perfect sort of tool (obviously not a 'useful' tool) that we seek out here in SC. Dim-witted, slack-jawed, and it looked like he was going to cry this morning...pussy. He doesn't represent the first district of SC, thank God, we have Henry Brown to ridicule for that post. What was it exactly that Natalie Maines said about Bush...that caused her and her fellow musicians to receive death threats and excommunication from the Toby Keith fan club? Gosh, it's so long ago now...

There's an institutional procedure which needs to be followed and respected. Clyburn understands the history and tradition of the House, and how those traditions and rules have helped keep this country governable in difficult times.

In the traditions of the House, being called to the well and forced to apologize for bringing disrepute upon the chamber is serious. (and no, I'm not being snarky.) If he doesn't apologize to the satisfaction of the members, he can be censured or expelled - which would put his name on a very short list of infamy.

Am I putting too much faith in the traditions of the institution? Maybe. But in this time of uncivility, with the venom we're seeing from the Right, it is my hope that falling back on the rules and traditions might help bring us back from the brink.

And if the Right doesn't care about honor, about character, about a man or woman's good name and their place in history, then I fear for the Republic.

Absolutely Jim. Well said. Wilson IS a coward and he DOES need to do much more than phone in some lame apology. Make him the example. Absolutely.

They behave like children. Let's start treating them that way.

Actually, maybe a better punishment is public humiliation. Put him in that medieval device where your head and arms are locked in... on the steps of the Capitol.

About the surge in donations to Wilson's opponent -- I was thinking about throwing a couple bucks his way, but am wondering if anyone actually knows anything about him. If he is just another Blue Dog waiting in the wings, I wouldn't bother. I don't seem to find an actual campaign Web site, just blogs about the incident and an Act Blue entry to make donations.

Why is anyone surprised that a redneck from South Carolina could behave ignorantly? Having to sit and listen to an "uppity" black President lay out his healthcare plans which makes him less revelant (if that's possible) was more than his pea brain could handle. The health care industry may ask for their money back if those bought can't stop meaningful reform.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that for Wilson to follow Clyburn's advice he would have to actually be a man which he clearly demonstrated that he is not.

Um, I think people should be wary of giving Wilson another podium. The MSM is already showing itself to be sympathetic to him and his point of view, even though his point of view is indisputably wrong.
