In a new post on his campaign blog, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) invokes the memory of America's dead soldiers to explain how we must fight for our freedom against President Obama's socialist agenda:
Will we continue to climb the mountain of personal responsibility, free markets and constitutional limited government; or will we sink into a steep pit of high taxes, suffocating debt and socialism?
The President and his leaders in Congress need to start listening to all of us: "Let freedom work!" Too many Americans fought and died for our freedom to simply give it away with apathy and silence.
One question: Does DeMint include the troops from World War II in this count? After all, those brave servicemen were fighting for an America run by that big-government President Franklin Roosevelt -- and a lot of them even voted for him, too!

Irrelevant. DeMint (and the now mostly-regional Republican party) has drunk deeply of the kool-aid and is neither rational nor in the fact-based universe. By debating him and/or trying to counter his "facts" we legitimize his underlying claim - that Democrats are somehow the enemy.
Our soldiers have given their lives for this country - for the idea of a republic where all have a voice, and where the best path is chosen through reasoned debate and compromise. How dare he invoke their sacrifice for partisan political ends.
The last time our soldiers fought for domestic political ideas DeMint's state, South Carolina, was on the losing end.

Go read the whole thing. It's got some great misinformation in there.
Get that? Obama and Democrats screwed up cash for clunkers and are responsible for the Katrina disaster.
What an asshole. Not very eloquent, but heartfelt.

This is a case in which there's no stupidity vs evil dilemma. Anyone, and that goes for demented DeMint, who puts blame for the Katrina disaster on anyone or anything other than Republicans and republican laissez-flood ideology is engaging in blatant lying, not stupidity, even if they're stupid.

One more point, because this just pisses me off so much...
What is DeMint really dog-whistling here? Our current president and his party = those our soldiers have fought against. That would include:
Saddam Hussein
Ho Chi Minh
Mao Zedong/Kim Il-Sung
Hitler
Tojo
Mussolini
And if that's who's in power right now, what actions are justified? I fear this could end badly.

You nitwits are just sad. The worst thing Kleefield can think of is to invoke FDR as a talisman against a strawman , and Minnie up there is having assassination fantasies.
I guess the idea of personal responsibility is too much for you two to handle.
Keep up the good work. Tsk.

Yeah, that's exactly what the Likudniks said when people were trying to get them to take a chill pill on their over-the-top rhetoric about Rabin.

Personal responsibility? Oh, you mean like the personal responsibility demonstrated by that other prominent South Carolinian, Gov. Sanford?
We just had eight years of shirking and alibis and anything but personal responsibility. More of that classic right-wing projection, eh?

I could just see DeMent and his crowd during World War II: "Rationing?!!! I'm not going to cut down on driving and using gas! I'll use as much as I want! You can't make me stop! This isn't a communist country!"
All for one, and one for one.

"Freedom Works … but only if we let it." Hmmm. would Freedom include a Presidential election in which your candidate lost?
Or perhaps Sen. DeMint is advocating anarchy. He thinks we've put too many restrictions and regulations on Freedom. So, tben he's saying, let's have the government totally step out of the way, and let everyone do whatever they want, and we'll just hope and pray that everyone will be totally honest and responsible and will play fair and abide by the rules, because otherwise ... well, you'd have a replay of the last 8 years.

This assmunch is sooooo running for president. Or at least he thinks he is. Bill Frist thought he was running for president too, until it turned out everyone though he was both creepy and a complete prick.

Look, DeMint is a right-wing nut, but the part about dying is just rhetoric, standard political rhetoric. Lots of politicians talk about sacrifices of past Americans.
Debt, taxes, and socialism have been Republican mantras since before I was born (and I'm 67). This statement is nothing to post about, nothing like DeMint's hope that health care would be Obama's "Waterloo," for example.

Go read the original. He's blaming Obama and Democrats for Hurricane Katrina. That's not just righwing rhetoric, as Absurdum pointed out, it's just plain old lying.

As a former Soldier who fought for our actual freedoms, I'm highly insulted by this piece of shit. And that's all I'm going to say, because everything else I'm thinking is less than polite.

First, thanks for your service as a soldier. And second, you might consider contact Mr. Demint's office and tell them that you are a former soldier and that you are personally insulted by his ignorant rants.

I fired off a (somewhat) polite email last night, after I'd calmed down a bit and talked this over with some people in my last unit. Several of them have as well, so some dissatisfaction is being made known. And you're welcome.

Jim DeMint unintentionally reveals what he believes our troops have been dying for this decade: the Republican Party. And he's right.
