D.C. liberals may be preparing for a significant teabagging onslaught at tomorrow's 9/12 rally, organized by Glenn Beck and FreedomWorks and other mainstays of the tea party retinue. But they're also probably engaging in a bit of sleight-of-hand.

"As you may know, FreedomWorks held a Capitol Hill demonstration yesterday, that turned into an impromptu rally for embattled Rep. Joe Wilson," reads an email from a House leadership aide to other members of Congress. "Now, based off of news reports and comments from leaders in the Tea Party movement, it looks like Saturday's event is going to be a huge gathering, estimates ranging from hundreds of thousands to 2 million people."

For reference, 2 million is just a hair under four times the total population of Washington, D.C., and approximately the number of people who showed up to the history-making inauguration of President Barack Obama. Sound like a bit of an exaggeration? It probably is.

A source at a major liberal organization in Washington says, "one of the things we decided to do was try to raise expectations for turnout," adding that he'd not received this particular House memo.

This is not to say that tomorrow's turnout will be small... but 2 million?!

Late update: FreedomWorks says it expect 20,000 to 30,000 teabaggers tomorrow. Assuming they're underselling, the true number's probably just a little higher than that. But then, the weather's supposed to suck tomorrow, so who knows! Maybe we're in for some...weak tea? [CYMBAL]

If the weather is anything like what we're getting here in CT, it's going to be a wet cold gathering.

{Fingers crossed}

I'm in the DC area, and it is indeed wet and cold here (in DC, anything under 80 degrees is "cold").

It may deter the less-than-fully-committed. (Whether the rest should be committed, I am not offering anything other than the opinion that they should be assessed.)
I wouldn't count on too much of a decline from what they would have had for reasonably good weather. Don't underestimate the depth of commitment from them - I've stood in 40 degree drizzle at 3AM, and it's not that rough if you really do care about what you're protesting.
With the media coverage it could have, it will underscore their perseverance - and make them more sympathetic to the like-minded or even waverers.
I would love to see them outnumbered 3 to 1 by riot-geared police without IDs, just so they get a taste of how that feels. Alas, that seems to still be restricted to DFHs.

Somebody should tell the "source at a major liberal organization in Washington" that when you intentionally inflate expectations for your opponent's event, you're not supposed to tell everybody!

Talk about teh stoopid.

FreedWorks Sez: As one wise conservative sage, Morton Blackwell, always says, “You should underpromise and overachieve.” That is what we are trying to accomplish by not giving the media any crowd estimates that they can use against us. We want to surprise them and shock the nation by the massive turnout that we expect on 9-12. I can only ask you to trust our judgment in this, and promise you that we will have a huge turnout.

“…I think we have to remember that this is a March on Washington, which should conjure up images of the street protests in other countries, like Ukraine, Poland in the 80's, Estonia, etc.. If we want the politicians to pay attention, I believe it is imperative that we keep our edge, tailor our message narrowly and maintain the populist imagery…”

I'm sure it's going to be almost exactly like Solidarity. Almost.

...and maintain the populist imagery...

So they aren't even arguing that it is actually populist in nature?

I think my favorite piece in all of this is the argument that somehow these d.bags represent a majority of Americans. The majority of Americans want health care reform (with a public option), out of Iraq and support marriage equality. Compare that with the Bush policies that were so unpopular by the end of his reign that the candidates in his own party ran in opposition to them. And is it just me or does Obama seem a little right of the American populace?

A brief history lesson concerning the founding fathers and the constitution. This country was set up with the principles of majority rule and minority rights. And regardless of any Jefferson quotes you want to dig up, nowhere did they advocate violent revolution to institute minority rule because a small segment of the population is dissatisfied with the outcome of an election.

Or to phrase it more succinctly: scoreboard.

Wow, stiggs. I suggest you expand your reading list. I feel certain that the majority of those you know and of the publications you read agree with the policy prescriptions you mention, but you really don't want to be Pauline "No one I know voted for him" Kael, do you?

Actually, I disagree with all sorts of things I hear and read. I frequently disagree with things Obama says and decisions he makes. But enough about your ignorant inferences into my life.

Did you actually have a point you wanted to make or were you just going to make veiled insinuations about me being an idiot?

Oh, were you assuming that by the "majority of Americans" I meant the "majority of the people I know"? 'Cause actually I was talking about polling. There have been many polls done which strongly indicate popular support for the issues I mentioned. A big one happened early last November, you might have heard of it...

Man it must have been really hard to find a million black people to show up for black jesus's celebration. Thats like trying to find a redneck in Alabama. These racist idiots elected a crackhead felon as MAYOR!!!!! Black folks are almost as racist as the whites i grew up dealing with in my day.Besides my brothas and sistas dont have jobs. Its easy to show up to a march when you got your bills paid by the GOVT or your scamming like those acorn HOES!!!

I'd love to see how this coverage in the Times and the WaPo (both of which are playing it up big and characterizing it as a "massive" display of force by the right) compares to their coverage of the Iraq War demonstrations, which as I recall was weak to non-existent despite much greater numbers, often in much more inclement weather.
