Department of Education Edits Out "Help The President" From Classroom Materials On Upcoming Speech

The Department of Education has now changed their supplementary materials on President Obama's upcoming address to schoolchildren on the importance of education -- eliminating a phrase that some conservatives, such as the Florida GOP, happened to have been bashing as evidence of socialist indoctrination in our schools.

In a set of bullet points listed under a heading, "Extension of the Speech," one of the points used to say: "Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."

However, that bullet point now reads as follows: "Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short‐term and long‐term education goals. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."

As I learned during my interview today with Florida GOP press secretary Katie Gordon, the bit about "help the president" was turned by conservatives into an example of socialist political indoctrination. I thought the "Extension of the Speech" heading made the context clear enough -- that it's in relation to Obama's speech about working hard in school -- but nevertheless it was raising eyebrows. The new version is now unambiguously related to those educational goals.

I asked Department of Education deputy press secretary Sandra Abrevaya why this was done, and whether it might have been in response to any political attacks. "We clarified some of the language," Abrevaya told me in an e-mail.

The White House needs to stop giving credence to these outlandish claims by addressing their concerns. It's the only way to put them in their place.

Right, because other Dems and the media are so great at knocking down these ridiculous claims. It frustrates me too, but the WH obviously no longer trusts the public and the media to recognize an absurd lie and to call it just that. Everything that was once normal is now evil and socialist when Obama does it. It's best to appease them now(and shut them up)rather than having to watch a panel of dumb ass pundits debate this bullshit.

Gotta pick your fights and when you're doing it, sometimes the best response is a "yeah, whatever."

But damn, if this had been Bush, any liberal who dared take exception to the words "help the President" in educational materials would have been fired, stalked by Malkin and subjected to continuous tag team abuse by the right wing noise machine by now.

With regards to educating our young, watch Hannity have a brain freeze during this debate with Bob Beckel and a Playboy covergirl (who is really intelligent).

The Florida GOP is right. Why would anyone want to help the president expand health care coverage? That's downright unAmerican.

Thanks for following up on that, Eric.

Yeah, there's something to be said for not changing it and for not giving them any reason to claim victory. But, I think it made sense to take away from them even that flimsy excuse of a hammer.

I wonder what the kids are learning from all this silly fuss. That the President wants to indoctrinate them?

I just finished reading Michelle Malkin's take on the issue, which was utterly predictable. But more interesting - much more - was the very first comment on her column:

"If I had a kid, I would go to the school and pull the damned fire alarm as soon as this propaganda started!"

Now, on what level is this NOT a bad, bad idea? Bring out emergency personnel at the risk of injury to themselves or others who may not heed the sirens, waste taxpayer dollars, frighten children needlessly, and my guess is, doing it purposely is something of a crime. As is a school invasion for the stated purpose.

Literally, shout "FIRE! in a crowded schoolhouse.

I saw this on my local Denver news last night. The ONLY way this crap got on my teevee--I'm guessing--is that the media outlets monitor conservative blogs or get calls/orders from on high. I even teach in a school and no one is talking about it--I wouldn't even know about it if I didn't read TPM. Obama could talk to kids that the sky is blue and the furies would be all over his "rejection" of how the sky is sometimes orange or red because of his bias against sunrise and sunset.
