Florida Republican chairman Jim Greer is warning of a new menacing initiative by President Obama: To indoctrinate our children into his grand socialist agenda!

The source of Greer's ire, as expressed in a new press release, is that the Department of Education has recently announced a September 8 national address by President Obama to America's students, in which the department says Obama "will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning." This would appear to be a pretty much non-partisan message on personal responsibility and character.

Greer sees it differently, though:

"As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology. The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power."

Greer also adds:

"While I support educating our children to respect both the office of the American President and the value of community service, I do not support using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda. The address scheduled for September 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the President's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our President's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates."

It should be noted that Greer is seen as one of the more sensible, mainstream Republicans, as he is a long-time ally of moderate Gov. Charlie Crist.

Requests for comment to the Florida GOP were not returned. A call was placed to the Department of Education, as well, which had no comment.

It's too bad the Florida GOP didn't get back us, as we did have some very important questions. For example, has Greer ever seen a movie called Doctor Strangelove?

I object in the strongest possible terms to chairman Greer trying to warp the minds of our schoolchildren with his nonsensical and hyper-partisan distortion of the president's message. Greer is urging America's schoolchildren to take no part in their own education. If he would prefer that his own children avoid homework, not take tests, and skip out of school whenever they feel like, that's his choice. But, it's irresponsible to say the least for him to be trying to force everyone else's children to do the same.

Gee, it's fun pretending to be a total fucking moron who doesn't understand simple English sentences. Now I know why the Republicans all enjoy doing this so much.

Actually, I don't think so. Many of us remember the tactics used by the germans and russians to indoctrinate the children into their way of thinking. I, as a conservative Republican, don't doubt for one second that the intent of Obama is to do just that. The school systems in this country have become so liberal, they would fawn all over themselves to aid and abet the new regime.

Sorry, you may just be too young and too influenced to realize what many of us fear.

I would not allow my children to watch anything broadcast by this person (Obama) aimed directly at the children of this nation. Especially if it were closed circuit to the schools.

Assuming this guy is a moderate Republican (ever more an oxymoron, I realize) is that he knows that he and his buddies screwed up so badly that the American people have taken away their keys, likely for good. And he's pitching a temper tantrum.

Funny Kleefeld should mention Dr. Merkwürdigeliebe.

Dr. Strangelove: Sir! I have a plan!

[standing up from his wheelchair]
Dr. Strangelove: Mein Führer! I can walk!
President Merkin Muffley: You mean people could actually stay down there for a hundred years?
Dr. Strangelove: It would not be difficult, Mein Führer. Nuclear reactors could - heh, I'm sorry, Mr. President - nuclear reactors could provide power almost indefinitely.
General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?
Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
Ambassador de Sadesky: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

How does that fit your Communistic ObamaNazi conspiracy Mandrake????

This is similar to some of the issues on the health care debate. "We think the public option should be optional!" Agreed. "We think there should be no dealth panels!" Agreed. I agree that Obama should not do what Greer suggested. Now, do we get points for agreeing with you?

Good Lord, these guys have really lost their marbles.

Any connection between Republican statements and objective reality was lost long ago.

He, along with everyone else, should be subjected to extensive ridicule. "Republicans think it's wrong to ask kids to go to school! Why do Republicans hate kids so much?"

The narrow minded perspective of these Republican will be their undoing. They refuse to learn the lessons of the Bush/Cheney administration's failings. Republicans continue the attempt to influence public perspectives by falsehoods and blatant deceptions at their peril. Death panels, birthers, red baiters ("socialists"). These are people we will despise in 20 to 30 years, much as we now do McCarthyism. Have you no decency Mr. Greer?
