White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs today fired back at right-wing critics who have attacked President Obama's upcoming stay-in-school speech. From today's press gaggle:

"I think it's a sad, sad day that the political back and forth has intruded on anyone speaking to schoolchildren and teachers and parents about the responsibilities that they have as we enter a new school year. If one kid in one school hears one message and goes from being a D student to a C student, then the speech is worth it. If one kid decides not to drop out of school, then the speech is worth it. Right now nearly three in 10 kids in school will not walk across a stage and get a high school diploma. If anybody thinks that's the recipe for long-term economic growth, I've got news for them.
"It's a sad state of affairs that many in this country politically would rather start an "Animal House" food fight rather than inspire kids to stay in school, to work hard, to engage parents to stay involved, and to ensure that the millions of teachers that are making great sacrifices continue to be the best in the world. It's a sad state of affairs."

I can feel a meme settling in: Republicans oppose Obama's "Stay in School" speech.

I know which side I'd prefer to be on. . .

John Harwood put the sad state of affairs, the Barnum and Bailey politics, in perspective.

He noted that there are 300 million Americans. As a matter of statistical probability then, this means that tens of millions are either extremely stupid, dangerously psychotic or both.

But why are these tens of millions Kleefeld's TPM beat?

John Harwood put it a lot nicer than I would have ----
I am just so sick to death of these stupid fuckers. I cannot believe what I read and hear. It's almost surreal listening to these fucking racist idiots

It looks like Gibbs and Obama are fired up today. Good for them. It has been a rough August and I never want to hear the words "robust public option" in that order again for about a yr after this is all over. It is about the only thing anchors seem to understand about health care so they parrot it 24/7 and every online site I go to is all about it.

Well, I don't understand why anyone is surprised by these buffoons. Republicans have been anti-education since at least 1980. They want to keep the populace uneducated so that they can win elections.

Also, they really don't care about the economy as a whole obviously. They only want to make sure that the super-rich keep making obscene barrels of cash. They don't care about anyone else. Therefore, in order to keep the dollars flowing they need to remain in power and keep shoveling dollars to this elite group. The only way that is accomplished is by keeping the population stupid.

See, it's really simple and makes sense, in a twisted sort of repuke way.

I wish I could say I think you're being unduly cynical and conspiratorially-minded.

Yes, I really do wish I could say that. Yep. Yep. I do wish it.

Maybe but the party has really been hijacked like never before - granted it got its start with Reagan that pond scum slime.

One of my friends is a lifelong Republican who voted for Obama last year. I had dinner with her Saturday night and she told me she's changing her registration and leaving the party for good.

Why? Because of this school speech brouhaha.

"This shows you were they are. There's nothing worth saving about that party," she said.

We're at a place in political wranglings that if anybody from the White House confessed that the world is in fact round - the crazies would HAVE to confess it flat - just to avoid ever being on the same side of any issue.

Indeed. It reminds me of the two quarreling kings from the Phantom Tollbooth.

We need a national shame meter. Let the MSM work on that instead of empowering these fear mongers
