Holbrooke Brushes Off Afghanistan Election Problems -- Compares Them To Minnesota Senate Race!

In a press conference in Paris, U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke downplayed the issue of fraud in the Afghanistan election -- even comparing it to the Minnesota Senate race!

"During that process there are going to be many claims of irregularities; that happens in every democracy," said Holbrooke. "We recently had a senatorial election in Minnesota which took seven months to determine the outcome, there were so many charges of irregularities. It certainly won't take that long in Afghanistan, but that happens in democracies, even when they are not in the middle of a war."

Two points immediately jump to mind. First, there is widely-documented mass fraud in Afghanistan, while the meticulousness of the Minnesota litigation in fact showed that, while the process had its imperfections and reasonable doubts, widespread fraud was not involved. And second, Holbrooke says how it won't take as long to sort out the situation in Afghanistan. Oh, if only Al Franken and Norm Coleman had guns!

Meanwhile, our political elites loss their collective minds over alleged - and likely - election fraud in Iran a couple of months ago. That fraud angered me as well...still does. The Iranian people deserve better. But do client states that we occupy get a free pass when they do the same thing? Jeez, it's like the numerous fake elections that were held in South Vietnam while we were fighting over there.

I would argue that in a case like this, we should actually be more vocal in our displeasure and opposition. With Iran, there wasn't much we could do then say, "We think you cheated and we don't like it". But in Afghanistan, a country occupied by the US/NATO that gets a lot of cash from us, I have to think we have a lot more influence over the government and election process. If we don't, why they heck are we still there? What's the benefit of occupying a country if that country's government is going to do whatever it likes. I'm not saying they shouldn't...sovereign nations have a right to govern themselves as they choose and if there's election fraud, they should handle it themselves. But if we can't do anything...if we're not even going to acknowledge that it happened, if we're going to downplay the claims in the face of contrary evidence, why don't we just leave?

Further evidence, if you really needed it, that the Obama administration is stupefyingly out of touch with the situation in Afghanistan.

Also, apparently totally out of touch with the situation in Minnesota.

This comment is, quite frankly, atrocious. Is he implying that every charge of vote fraud will be found untrue, as in Coleman's attacks on Franken? Or just what is he trying to say?

Coleman didn't even charge vote fraud. He just disputed the count.

Reminds me of Rumsfeld's "more people die in DC than Baghdad" comment.

Nice.

"so many charges of irregularities" sounds like Ken Blackwell's Ohio election of 2004.

Holbrooke always has been a turd.

Ironically, one of the reasons I opposed Hillary's election last year was to keep Bill-era people like him out of office. Go figure.

I just sent a message to state asking what will happen with our policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan with such a fool playing such a large role.
