Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) is getting on the anti-ACORN bandwagon established by Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN), who is of course a potential presidential candidate. This is to say, Jindal is ending the non-existent state funding of the controversial group.
From the Times-Picayune:
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order to keep any state money from going to the controversy-wracked Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has its national headquarters in New Orleans.
According to the state's Division of Administration, no state agencies have existing contracts with ACORN.
The Louisiana Republican Party has put out a press release celebrating the event: "Jindal Issues Order Ending Funding of ACORN"

"(C)ontroversy-wracked?" Really? The Times-P seems to be carrying quite a bit of Republican water, just by using that description. They're 'controversy-wracked the way Bill Clinton was 'scandal-plagued,' John Kerry was 'anti-American,' President Obama is 'Kenyan, or maybe Indonesian,' and on and on and on. Just because Republicans throw a temper tantrum all over Fox News does not make a thing true. No matter how much the corporate media wishes it were so.

Well the state used to

Michael DiResto, spokesman for the Division of Administration, said late Thursday a search by the Office of Contractual Review produced two expired contracts between state agencies and ACORN affiliates.
A $53,300 agreement between Acorn Community Land and the state Attorney General’s Office to “inform the public, particularly individuals at disaster recovery centers about their rights to safe, affordable, accessible housing under FEMA, the Fair Housing Act & Other Local, State & Federal Laws” expired in 2006.
A $1.5 million contract for Acorn Housing Corporation to “provide housing counseling services and outreach to predominantly low to moderate income persons who owned homes located in Hurricane Katrina and Rita affected parishes in Louisiana and are Eligible for Road Home Program Benefits” expired two years ago.

"Well the state used to".
What's your point? It isn't now, and Jindal is ending something that doesn't exist. That's some brilliant leadership.

Jindal is ending something that doesn't exist

Not true - the state gave ACORN money in the past and has had a funding relationship with it. Jindal is taking a pre-emptive step to stop it being reactivated. If the state had never given ACORN any money you might have a point

What, precisely, about the phrase "in the past" don't you get, anyway?
"in the past" does not equal "currently".

So...either Jindal is out of touch and unaware of how his state spends money in the first place, or he is counting the same being true of his 'fans'. We all know that while any political opponent will make hay with the first choice, it is the second one that is the truth.
So sad to know that it will work.

How many people are employed at their National Headquarters? If Kenneth the Page's deranged twin wants to jump on the anti-ACORN bandwagon, I'm sure Oregon would love those jobs up here.

It just goes to show just HOW principled the Republican Party is - that they should go out on this sort of limb and make such a strong statement.

This reminds me of the Republican governors' march to refuse the federal stimulus money. How did that work out?

Will we ever see poll numbers on how many southern Republicans think Jindall wasn't born in the USA? I bet it's the same as Obama's stats.

At the Values Voter summit they had a poll for presidential candidates. In order from first - Huckabee, Romney, Pawlenty and then Palin in fourth place. The main issue of concern for these folks was abortion. This was a poll for the approximately 2,000 attendees.

Except, if you read the Times-Picayune linked article, it looks like the Louisiana branch of ACORN might be in some real hot water over unpaid taxes and other fiscal hijinks. Of course, it's just "investigations", but does look like there's smoke and perhaps a fire....
I think we need to settle in for a long winter of ACORNs falling from the tree.
