Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) has posted this YouTube address, as part of his new fundraising appeal to help defend him from liberal attacks in the wake of his "You lie!" outburst:
"On these issues, I will not be muzzled. I will speak up, and speak loudly, against this risky plan," Wilson proclaims. "The supporters of the government takeover of health care, and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals, are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly-conceived plan. they want to silence anyone who speaks out against it. They made it clear they want to defeat me, and pass the plan."
"Health care is a matter of life and death for so many," he later adds. "I choose life, with health-insurance reform."

The last time George W. Bush stood before a joint session of Congress he had approval ratings in the mid-20s. Three-quarters of the population disapproved of the job he was doing. No president in history, not even Nixon, had such high disapproval ratings. His two terms were complete failures. Yet not one person in that joint session of elected American officials yelled that he was a liar or stood up and walked out on him because he wasn't saying things they agreed with. The man who led us to war on nothing but lies was never treated with such utter disrespect.
My how far we've come.

I think one of the charms about this place is the fact that the management has no problem beating stories to death. Yeah, a couple get out of hand with seemingly trivial details but I feel that is a small price to pay (you can always not read stories you're bored of...).
We live in a culture with phenomenal access to information which in turn has created the 24 hour news networks which pick up the latest news story run with it but then drop it as soon as it gets old. I feel like TPM is an answer to this problem - they pick up the stories and run with it to the end, dragging it out to the conclusion wherever that might be.
And I feel like this story is a good example of how that's important. The guy shouts at the president, apologizes and then asks for money for shouting at the president. Choosing to report the apology because it's "current" but not the flagrant contradiction because the story is "old" is doing a disservice to those of use who have ADHD and are genuinely interested.

Will someone please, please, please note the direct quote from the Republican Committee Rules of the House of Representatives:
"Until the 109th Congress, it was not in order to make certain references to the Senate or individual senators. However, at the beginning of that Congress, the House removed the prohibition on making references to the Senate, leaving only the requirement that debate be confined to the question under debate and avoid “personality.” The precedents of the House allow a wide latitude in criticism of the President, other executive officials, and the government itself. However, it is not permissible to use language that is personally offensive to the President, such as referring to him as a “hypocrite” or a “liar.” Similarly, it is not in order to refer to the President as “intellectually dishonest” or an action taken by the President as “cowardly.” References to the Vice President, in spite of his role as President of the Senate, are measured against the standard used for the President rather than prior standards used to govern the Senate."
Categories of Unparliamentary Speech
* Defaming or degrading the House
* Criticism of the Speaker’s personal conduct
* Impugning the motives of another Member
* Charging falsehood or deception
* Claiming lack of intelligence or knowledge
* References to race, creed, or prejudice
* Charges related to loyalty or patriotism"
http://rules-republicans.house.gov/Educational/Read.aspx?ID=5
Guess the jokers don't read the Rules of the House or their own guide on appropriate decorum. But my question is this: Why is no one bringing this up? According to the House of Representatives Guide of Decorum, this is a censurable offense.

Joe Wilson does not qualify to be a Congressman in the US Congress! His disrespect towards President Obama has demonstrated that he is "unprofessional", "uneducated", and mostly "unpatriotic" to our country. There is no excuse for his behavior unless he admits that he has mental issues or maybe tourettes symptoms! Either one disqualifies his position in our Congress. The only thing that I can think of treating the President of the U.S. with such disrespect is the Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at George W. Bush, who, arguably didn't even deserve THAT! Why do we need a congressman who as a law maker but cannot follow rules by himself? Even a high school student will get a detention for shouting "YOU LIE!" to a teacher in a classroom! Is this the doctrine that you right wing want to shove in our children's brains? This is not a damage that an apology can undo, not to mention with an unsincere apology. If Obama really were a "communist", "chairman Mao" or "Nazi" as you right wing extremist have labelled him with, ironically, Joe Wilson won't even be able to shamelessly record his own YOUTUBE video for fundraising now. He will be in prison already. I am sure Dick Cheney will know how to deal with people like that?! Freedom of speech? In this case Mr. Wilson, you have violated our Constitution by embarrassing our nation! Can I call your act "TREASON"?

Hmm, i haven't seen President Obama apologize for not living up to his commitment of a bi-partisan plan? Seems he just wants to keep pushing HIS plan forward (as he stated many times). For you business owners out there - when was the last time you actively recruited a non-military government worker to be an employee?? In my 14 years as a business owner, the answer is zero. If the government can't compete against UPS or FedEx, how can they compete against insurance companies? They won't be able to. I like the statement of "government option will be self-funded" if that is 100% going to be the case, i'm ok with it - but i don't believe it will stick. When i was watching his speech (at a restaurant) the healthy young bartender (who chooses not to pay for health insurance, but instead pay cash for his visits) is classified as one of those "needing" health insurance. BS! He was liberal, but just realized he will have to fork over about $2400 - $6000 a year for insurance now.... hmmm, seems like a round-a-bout increase in expenses for those that make less than $250,000.... not a tax though... Start with increasing competition amongst insurance companies, decrease lawsuits, don't allow people to get dropped from insurance... and let's see what that step does. Increasing the size of the government is not a good first step. Just look at the USPS.

I feel what has been going on with in both parties has been a disgrace to us as a democratic country. What is happening to our freedom of speech. The people on both sides of the the fence are completely taking advantage of what use to be a great thing, FREEDOM of SPEECH. Let's stop being so reckless and really find out what we all 'want' to say and we as 'the people" try to make some sense out of all this so we can make this happen for US and us, instead of attacking as if we all don't want what is right.
Hey we are all not going to agree but let's try to agree to disagree and move this forward. GEEZ LOUISE!!! Can't we all just get along and stop the rhetoric and entitlement and who is more of a bully and she said he said tactic. UGH!! This entitlement is childish. So grow up America and the democrat and republic parties and all in between and out of between... you all too!!
Ok I said what I had to and I hope I made myself clear. Hey and the only thing I attacked really is the attacking. Let's have civil debates not screaming and shouting and rhetoric. We've heard it all, I'm sick of it and I know a lot of us are. So let's have our children who are watching politics more then ever, show them that in order to be heard you must stay respectful with integrity and not through hateful manners of speaking and bullying. This is America people let's hold on to what we as a country fought so hard for through out ancestors and be the people of the people and keep our nation strong and a united front. Our nation is in a major crisis and we need to think clearly and rationally more then ever to get back on track. So let's fight to unit not fight to break apart. I am fighting right now by putting it out there. It' my shout out!! Do I hear more of the same?

As a Retired OFFICER military veteran, I am disgraced by Joe Wilson's outburst toward the President of the United States! This was NOT the time nor place for this type of outburst! That's what television stations and radio talk shows are for afterwards.
Now, if retired Colonel Joe Wilson had this happen to him on his watch by a soldier, that soldier would have been reprimanded meaning... money taking out of his paycheck, extra duty and dropped in rank. That's how serious it is! I know because once again, I'm a retired Army Officer, I have seen it happen! So, please SIR tell me why you should not have to apologize NOT ONLY to our Commander in Chief on the House floor, but we as the American people want an apology as well! This behavior is NOT to be accepted by YOU, Joe Wilson or anyone else. I may not agree with everything the President of the United States says, but I can agree to disagree. However, this is one issue I do agree with! Health Insurance for ALL American citizens. It's the right thing to do, and for those who think differently, because you have health insurance, shame on you! What a selfish life you live and my GOD help you on judgement day!
I have VA health insurance and don't plan on changing my health insurance. However, I have a heart and it's only the RIGHT thing to do...that is Health Insurance for ALL Americans with a public option. May GOD bless you all!

Many of the republicans were disrespectful to the President but Joe Wilson was the worst. Joe Wilson is “The lier” spreading misinformation and fear. I agree with the other poster who proposed we send a donation check of 6 cents (1 cent for every letter of “you lie”) to Joe Wilson and then send a generous donation to his opponent Democratic candidate Rob Miller! I'm glad we live in an age of clear thinking individuals who know that, in politics, everyone has an agenda and almost everything they do, down to their most minute facial expressions, has been well thought out.
I'm also glad that most people recognize that a person who attempts to shout and yell out of turn, is trying to squelch the free speech of others; usually this is done because that speaker believes it is more important that people hear _their_ message, above all others.
They attempt to squelch out the other voices, so that you only hear _their_ beliefs, _their_ opinions, _their_ arguments. They don't want you to hear the other side, they want to charge you emotionally, so that you can't think clearly about the real subject matter.
I'm glad we live in a country where most people understand this and see Joe Wilson's outburst for what it is.. him trying to talk over everyone else because of his own beliefs, despite what a real look at the issues would reveal, and irrespective of facts or information that would otherwise be illuminating.
Joe Wilson isn't just passionate about his beliefs, he's passionate about silencing anyone elses voice.. that's classic ignorance. I'm glad to see ignorant politicians exposing themselves to the public, so that they can be swept to the side, and not taken seriously. What a ridiculous showboating politician.
So many republicans expected the country to give them the benefit-of-the-doubt, and we did. Then even when we tried to take it back, they thumbed their noses at us, as Mr. Bush kept acting according to his own agenda, and not that of the majority of Americans.. and it was too late, we were powerless to stop him.
Now that their fingers have been pried off of the steering wheel, they want to throw a big fuss, and scream and yell and clang pots and pans so that nobody can get any work done until they are put back in office. That's really pathetic. ..and they aren't going to grow up. We the people have to hold these bad politicians accountable, this might be our only chance to do so.

As a member of Congress, he owes, at the very least, respect to the office of the President. While he is entitled to speak up about his opinions, etc., there is a time and an appropriate place for him to do so. His blatant attempt to disrupt the President's address to the American people was wasted. President Obama paused momentarily, then continued with his eloquent and well thought out comments. Comments that sought to bring about a much needed change while seeking to bring both parties to the table.

Would he have done the same thing to Mr. Bush Or Mr. Clinton. I don't think so. The loss of his job would send a clear message to him. You are a member of the heirarchy and your behavior is expected to be higher than what you displayed.
