The online donations keep coming in for Rob Miller, an Iraq War veteran and Democratic candidate against Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), in the wake of Wilson's "You lie!" outburst during President Obama's speech to Congress on Wednesday night.
The DCCC announced that as of 6:30 a.m. ET this morning, Miller had received more than $750,000, from over 20,000 individual contributors, in the time since Wilson's interjection.

The way districts are gerrymandered today this could very well not be enough, but will at least likely force GOP dollars to SC to defend.
I just hope that donations to Miller are over and above what would have been given to other dems.

Something unique like this, with 20,000 mostly small dollar donors early in the season, likely will increase what goes to other Dems, not take away from it. Any time you can get people giving early in the cycle, they are going to give more and more often as the cycle goes on. There's not a lot of hot competition nationally for the money right now - a few special elections like Bill Owens in NY 23 (give at http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/22718) or the Mass Senate Seat (give at http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/8363)- so most people aren't thinking about giving here as an alternative to giving somewhere else politically.
Early money is great. If only we could do a money bomb like this once a weak, with 20,000 people averaging $30 to $40 each, we'd add 20 or 30 Congressional Seats to the majority.

Amazing. It's a nice warning for others - act like an idiot and there will be tangible consequences.

Joe Wilson raised $200.000.
Rob Miller raised $750,000.
This disparity tells me at least two things. First, the anti-everything folks are more in the minority than they believe themselves to be. And two, when you cultivate a voter base of under educated, low wage supporters and they don't have the money to send to your campaign, it comes back to chomp you in the arse.

You can see for yourself at Act Blue exactly how many people have donated and how much they have given. Using the numbers at 5:30 EDT, he has had 22,226 people that have given an average of $36.60 each. Some of those people have given a couple of hundred, but a lot more have given $5 or $10.

Yeah, this is kind of fun, but maybe it would be good to have some information about what Rob Miller ... you know, believes about things. Is not being Joe Wilson really enough of a reason to give the guy money? I mean, if he is just another Blue Dog asshole, I think it would be a waste.

Unfortunately, A Democrat has to be at least somewhat of a Blue Dog to be elected in a red state like SC. A progressive would be steamrolled in SC.

Here's an idea to try to take back government from the special interests of the health industry (don't know if it's legal or not, but I'll leave that question to anyone who actually implements my suggestion):
1) Start a fundraising drive on the internet.
2) Pool the money to support a strong, effective pubic option, as follows:
a) If a Dem. legislator fails to support a public option, the fund will pay up to 130% of all funds received by that legislator from the health care industry for the past two years to a viable primary challenger who will support such a plan.
b) If a Rep. legislator fails to support a public option, the fund will pay up to 130% of all funds received by that legislator from the health industry for the past two years to a viable Dem. contender who will support such a plan.
c) Make any recipient of funds sign an oath in writing that he will support ANY health care proposal that would lower the cost of health care without reducing services or access (including single payer).
But what, you ask, to do about the legislator that votes against the public option that hasn't received any money from the health industry?. . . um, never mind.

Great plan! Now come up with 130% as much money as the health insurance industry spends on politics!

I think the party of Sanford & Vitter pretty much has a lock on that policy area.

Now at $768,000. Lindsey Graham has now gone on the attack, castigating the PRESIDENT for his "undignified" tone during the speech:

The ratios do tell a story. Sherrod Brown said on Olbermann yesterday that the Republicans have become a white minority Southern party, and that was bad for the country.
For the moment, I think it's best to leave their increasingly regional values out of any consideration in legislating for the whole country: They seem never to know what's in their best interests, are gullible and susceptible to lying and demagoguing, and they are most driven, I am afraid, by their racial fears. I would not feel this way if they did not keep trying to engineer black voters out of their voting rights.
These regional values are far from those of mainstream Americans. In time they might see the errors of their ways. But for now....
So long, pardner.

I'd be interested to find out if there's a way to determine the ratio of in-state/out-of-state contributions for Miller and Wilson. Could be quite enlightening.

As nice as it would be to see Joe Wilson lose his seat because of this, I'm not getting my hopes up. South Carolina remains a VERY Republican state, Wilson is a fairly established incumbent (with the corresponding ability to bring home the bacon for his district) and a lot of time remains before November 2010 for people to forget about this.
Remember that Michelle Bachmann's opponent last November also raised a ton of money immediately following Bachmann putting her foot in her mouth. Plus her district wasn't nearly as conservative as Wilson's and it was a very unfavorable election for all Republicans. Bachmann still got re-elected.
