There were a few moments during tonight's speech in which Republican members were less than respectful to President Obama, given the usual tradition in this country of deferring to the President during a speech to Congress.
The real star of the night, of course, was Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) who shouted out "You lie!" after Obama said the health care plan would not cover illegal immigrants, and was then himself booed by other House members:
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who for his part went through a real knock-down drag-out fight with Obama in last year's election, has condemned Wilson's outburst as "totally disrespectful," and said there is "no place for it in that setting or any other and he should apologize immediately."
Wilson has in fact just apologized: "This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President's remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility."
It's an understatement to say that Wilson is a big-time conservative activist -- he's actually opening his office this Saturday, to host people marching in the Glenn Beck-organized "9/12 March on Washington." And nothing says the spirit of national unity -- the original premise of Beck's 9/12 movement -- like yelling "You lie!" at the President in the middle of a speech to Congress.
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) could be seen typing on his BlackBerry during the speech, at a point when President Obama said he'd inherited a large deficit because Republicans pass big programs without paying for them:

I sent Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring a quick e-mail asking what Cantor was doing -- was he typing a statement, taking notes, sending an e-mail, etc? Dayspring quickly replied to me that Cantor was taking notes.
And in addition, conservative House GOPers waved their own bill as a "silent protest" against the charge that they don't have a plan:

This just in: Joe Wilson Exposes Prez as 'Liar', Wife Now 'Fair Game'
TPM Reader News (fictional) has learned overnight that Rep. Joe Wilson (Wingnut-SC) was retainbed by the CIA to hospital ERs 'in or around a US international border that is not Canada' to determine if indeed illegal alien 'Saddam Sanchez and his family sought to acquire $500 worth of medical care from America'.
Mr. Wilson had completed half of a rough draft of his to-be-published op-ed "What I Found in El Paso" but decided shouting "you lie" at the President would be "easier than all that writing stuff."
In further developments, the White House has secretly determined that Wilson's wife, a NOC for the South Carolina Republican Auxiliary is now "fair game."

Now I know I've lived too long. The disrespect for Obama has gotten so out of hand that it shames all of us. Let us just imagine what would have happened if someone on the left had called George W. Bush a liar when he was addresssing a joint session...... We cannot tolerate this kind of behavior from anyone in the Congress as it only demeans all of us in the long run.

Sometimes I really wish the Christian Exodus people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Exodus) could just get their way. They could have their little 15th-century revival in South Carolina, and we could just make sure that all the gates in the FENCE around the state only let people go in, not out.

I moved to South Carolina, in 1959, from San Jose, CA. I was stunned to see, on my first day, drinking fountains that said, 'White Only'; then I learned that the schools were segregated. For a 7 year old child who thought all of American was like California, this was a shock. One, day, hiking down a dirt road, I came upon what South Carolinians delicately refer to as a 'Shanty Town'. The poverty was so shocking it was almost more than I could comprehend. This was just accepted as reality by S Carolinians. I've never really recovered from the impact of these revelations. In 1962 I moved back to Monterey, CA, and it was like returning to civilization. When I heard Wilson's outburst, I immediately thought of Preston Brooks. They grow them ignorant and aggressive down in South Carolina.I know not all S Carolinians are like Wilson and Brooks--but they do have a tradition of ignorance and violence.

You forgot that South Carolina was also at the forefront of the nullification crisis in the early 19th century, and that at one point they were threatening to secede from the Confederacy.
One of South Carolina's own 19th-century politicians once said of the state that it was too small to be a republic and too large to be an insane asylum.

What lies? Health care reform isn't going to bankrupt the country although the immoral and crooked insurance companies are doing as good a job as possible on that already. After Congress repeals the Bush tax cuts there will be enough money to get things going on health care. You really do need to start getting some facts rather than the made up news of Fox and talk radio. The rudeness and ignorance of Wilson and yourself serves neither you nor the country well. Obama said that the lies and the liars are going to be called out. Your people are going to be shamed and shown for what they are. I don't understand all the outrage at Wilson's outburst. So what. We don't have royalty in this country and bad manners are just that--bad manners.Obama isn't some namby-pamby blue blood who can't take a bit of heckling. If any thing, he's a world class heavyweight and a bit of heckling tells you how effective his opponents believe he is.
Republicans talking out of both sides of their mouths? News flash: No shit.
Why should we respect the office if we don't respect the man in that office? We don't have a king, and for good reason. The person in that office, is the office at that moment. Bush, a man I believe to be a war criminal, held this very same office. I did not respect him personally nor did I respect any office he held.

September 10, 2009 8:47 AM in reply to The Grand Panjandrum
If we have any hope of building a better future for our democracy, it will depend on the effective use of our institutions and our traditions. To the extent that they are devalued, their power is diminished and we are all the poorer for it.
The fracas at various congresspersons' "town hall meetings" last month are a demonstration of what could happen. In the past, people would have been too embarrassed to holler and scream and disrupt that sort of civic function. Once that barrier is broken down, however, the result is that a handful of radicals can act as spoilers and shut down any constructive civic discourse. When this happens, reason always loses out to coercion, and public policy inevitably suffers.
It's about hearing to some semblance of our social contract. There are always some who will, through disruption and division, seek to nullify the result of an election they don't agree with, but they have to be kept at the margins by adherence to the laws, institutional standards, and, just as importantly, social conventions of respect and reasonable disagreement.
I realize this is in some sense a deeply conservative position to take. So be it. It's worth pointing out that the people we are talking about are not conservatives at all -- they are radicals and reactionaries without a shred of respect for our democracy, for our institutions, or for those of our citizens that are not "like" them (which, of course, now constitute a majority).

Well I'm sure I'll stir up the liberal hornet's again anyway so here goes. First of all I believe, generally, the office should be respected, however, I also think few Presidents have denigrated the office as badly as Obama. To Mr Cassidy ,yes my name is Jim & I am from Texas and proud of it...nothing to be ashamed of as you insinuate in your sarcastic remark. No doubt Joe Wilson was out of line, but no more so tha Nancy Pelosi calling anyone who disagrees with her "un-American". And believe it or not I disagreed with Bush getting bogged down in the Iraqi war, however I don't remember ANYONE complaing after 9/11. And yes Bush created a 4 trillion $ deficit by dong so, however Obama's tarp & stimulus have already run the bill up another 2 trillion in 250 days & he's just getting started! By his own admission we will be 9 trillion in debt by the time he leaves office. (of course he's assuming 2 terms) It's beyond me how ANYONE....republican or democrat can look at the numbers and say "yeah! we can do this" I guess like many Americans the truth is I am so sick of our elected officials from the President on down, Republican AND Democrat I could scream. It appears to me they have been in their protective bubble, where THEY have free Health care and everything is covered, where THEY can write $100,000 checks on the Congressional Bank and when it bounces no one asks them to pay it, where THEY can retire with their full salaries and benefits, and where THEY look @ the American people as a bottomless money pit for them And as for you Mr hickerson ..you don't speak fluent aything

1. Obama has done nothing to denigrate the office of the presidency, and a good deal to dignify it.
2. Nancy Pelosi never said that anyone who disagreed with her was un-American. You are confusing her with Republican leaders under the Bush administration.
3. If you don't remember people complaining after 9/11, then you don't remember much. I complained, and plenty, and especially about the plans to invade Iraq on what was clear to me was a fabricated pretext, and I was far from the only one. Bush's response was basically (and what he actually said to one member of the public who dared to take mild issue with him early in his first term): "Who cares what you think?"
4. The Bush administration ran the national car into the ditch, and now you are criticizing Obama for the size of the repair bill?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. If you don't mind I'd like to take a moment to reflect on them.
First of all, it is because mr. wilson's comment was shouted out during a presidential speech to a joint session of congress that so much is being made of it, by both the left and right. Regardless of whether or not someone thinks it was deserved, nobody can argue that it didn't occur at a moment when there is an expectation and tradition of the highest civility. The subsequent reaction to his comment is inseparable from the context, the setting in which it was made, and that makes a direct comparison to mrs. pelosi's comments moot. My intent is here not to defend mrs. pelosi or what she has said; I only hope to make clear how mr. wilson's outburst goes beyond the normal politician's mouthing off. In my personal opinion he should have respected the setting, and the office of the presidency, if not the man himself, and made his criticism after the speech.
Secondly, I see you have expressed a certain frustration with our elected officials. I think this is something on which you can find a lot of agreement! In the case of healthcare, however, I would argue this is a rare situation in which they are taking a benefit that they enjoy - health insurance based on competition amongst the providers and freedom of the individual to choose what works for them - and extending that benefit to american citizens. This is a very good thing. I also see that you are worried about future deficits, which is good. So is the president! He made clear last night that he will not sign a bill that adds to the deficit; not one dime were his words. At this point it is healthy to question his ability to do that - but the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding is still being prepared.

(Just sent this)
Dear Mr. Wilson,
I was absolutely shocked to hear your outburst during the President's speech to Congress and the people of the United States last night. As you yourself have acknowledged, such behavior is completely unbecoming a member of Congress and it would be sensible to consider resignation. Since I find it unlikely that you will do so, I want to offer you the following to think about.
You, sir, called President Obama a liar in public on the basis of your (potentially erroneous) concerns about the future of health-care legislation. That is to say, you were moved to speak against legislation that will actually help people, that will save Americans from death and suffering. But you, sir, failed to ever question the honesty or motives of our previous President, George W. Bush, when he proposed legislation to attack a foreign nation on what have since proven to be false pretenses. That is to say, you were unmoved to speak against legislation that could only cause pain and suffering to our own troops and to innocents in another country and that would cost us billions or even trillions of dollars. In fact, you were a co-sponsor of the Iraq War bill. Have you, since that time, ever in your own mind or heart called George W. Bush a liar? Why not? Why is it permissible to call our current president a liar based on your own suspicions now, and not possible to recognize as a liar a leader who disseminated information that is now widely known to be false?
Why is one man a liar and the other not?
Ask yourself that, Mr. Wilson. And if, under new health-care legislation, a small number of people who are not American citizens are healed, perhaps you might come weigh that against the tens of thousands (or more) that have been killed and injured as the result of actual lies.
Yours Sincerely,
(name removed)
Spring Island (2nd congressional district), South Carolina

Can we once and for all stop kidding ourselves by denying that bigotry and racism is at the very heart of the angry opposition to all things Obama?
As the level of right wing desperation rises their deep-seated racism and bigotry becomes more and more overt. We heard on the TV and read on the Net during the 2008 presidential campaign all the vile, angry, bitter, disgusting, and, yes, threatening words that spewed forth from those who call themselves American but who are in fact still sons and daughters of the Confederacy and their sympathizers. Most of it was said or posted anonymously but there were some prominent political and media figures who stretched the limits openly such as Rush Limbaugh and his "Barack the Magic Negro" routine. And there were some Southern politicians who used the old code words and phrases reminding that "boy" not to get "uppity" and "forget his place".
Once their worst nightmare became a reality, a black man as president, the level and number of such attacks increased exponentially. As did the number of threats against the life of the president and his family. So it should come as no surprise that we now have a "preacher" openly calling for Obama's death; tee shirts being sold at the so-called "Teabag parties" and on-line with pictures of the Ku Klux Klan on them; state and local Republican politicians trading racist e-mails and racist images with each other and their constituents; a Republican senator, Saxby Chambliss warning the president to show "humility" when he addresses the Congress (by which he means not be uppity with his white betters); and finally, last night, the ultimate and most brazen display of disrespect not just to the man but to the office of the President.
Yes, yes. We are hearing calls for Joe Wilson to be reprimanded or censured or some such nonsense which is the congressional equivalent of hitting a puppy with a rolled-up newspaper and shouting "bad boy" when it soils the living room carpet. I can assure you that when that good ol' boy gets back home, he's going to be treated to rounds of applause and back-slapping from those who see his action as the right and proper thing to have done in the face of such insolence.
But the media which continues to allow a soapbox for these things to be broadcast around the country and the globe because it makes for good ratings are guilty of aiding and abetting this fanaticism. Needless to say, it is the Fox News Network that is the most culpable for allowing sick twisted individuals like Glenn Beck on the air. But those of us who either deny the racism and bigotry that is right there before our very eyes. Or merely, tut-tut and ignore it as just the ravings of a few misguided souls are equally to blame. This is a good time to remind ourselves of Pastor Martin Niemoller's words:
"First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."
And never, ever forget that 99.99999% of them are cowards. Want proof? Check out http://www.joewilson.house.gov/ this morning.

I agree - racism is the motivator for the virulent opposition to President Obama. The press needs to start pointing out connections among the people and groups who are promoting their hatred as principled dissent.
I think it is no coincidence that the Republican party thrives in the states of the Confederacy. They still can't believe they lost the Civil War; a president of color is more than their brains can comprehend.

Labeling opposition to Barry O as racist is an easy way to avoid dealing with the plethora of mistakes he and the other Democrats are making.
(I prefer to call them Commiecrats since 1. it fits their ideology much better, and 2. Some Democrats still hold on to a little bit of common sense and conservatism.)
Conservatives - even old unrepentant CSA descendants like myself - oppose Obama because of his politics not his race.
I realize I will never convince most Commiecrats of that fact since it is easier for them to scream racist than to activate the handful of brain cells they have in tact and actually think about the issues.

I served in the US Army for 23 years, to hear a congressman call the President a liar, when the FACTS clearly support the President, it turned my stomach. How disgusting and shameful. Hell, does Wilson even understand the numbers of "illegal" in his own state that fall under the sharecropper system. Again, there is no acceptable excuse for such a childish act. I could expect such actions at a High School assembly, but a joint session of the Congress. An "unparallel insult" among respectful body of Americans; shameful.

You hit the nail on the head. I wonder how many rich chicken farmers or rich chicken processors have supported Wilson financially?
Must be the same people screaming to send them back too.
Damn politics in the US is confusing.

If Van Jones can be hounded out for calling Republicans "*ssholes", I would not be sorry if the same were to happen to Wilson, given that - in his case - he sorta confirmed Jones' assessment.

That puny little piece of paper the repubs are waving around wouldn't contain the instructions to my doggie daycare provider.

Barry O told one lie after another throughout the speech - including the one Joe Wilson correctly labeled - and got a pass from his fellow socialists in the MSM.
Wilson tells the truth and the sky falls on his head.
Joe Wilson did nothing wrong except apologizing for telling the truth about Obama.
The term, "You lie." could be applied to just about everything that comes out of the Prez's mouth.

The issue has been fact checked by numerous groups, and the consensus is that Obama's legislation does not offer any federal benefits to illegal immigrants - in fact it explicitly prohibits them.
So nothing about Obama's statement with regard to illegal immigrants receiving healthcare benefits was a lie. That's fact, just as much as 2+2=4.
Other things President Obama said may be debatable, but there's a difference between saying something that's arguable and lying, which denotes deliberate intention to deceive - the types of people who claim that he is a liar have hated him since he made the primaries - or are health care executives and lobbyists whose self interests clearly supercede their objectivity.
