Last week, when Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) circulated an outline of the bill he released today, the reform campaign Health Care for America Now pointed me to letters they'd written to leading Democrats urging Baucus to include a public option in his legislation. Ultimately, he didn't.

Now, HCAN says the Baucus bill is a "failure."

"The Baucus bill is a gift to the insurance industry that fails to meet the most basic promise of health care reform: a guarantee that Americans will have good health care that they can afford," says HCAN's campaign director Richard Kirsch.

The Baucus bill would give a government-subsidized monopoly to the private insurance industry to sell their most profitable plans - high-deductible insurance - without having to face competition from a public health insurer.

Under the Baucus bill, employers would have no responsibility to help pay for their workers' coverage and would be given incentives to have workers pay more for barebones insurance. Americans who don't get health benefits through work would still not be able to get good, affordable coverage.

We urge Senators on the Finance Committee to replace the Baucus plan with legislation that will do what the Senate HELP Committee and three House committees have done: guarantee that Americans have good health insurance that they can afford with the choice of a strong national public health insurance option.

That's not quite the same as saying they urge Senators to vote "no." I'll call to get clarification on that point. Either way, they're not making it a secret where they stand.

Gosh, and they don't even mention the 35% Baucus tax on good healthcare plans going forward. Like the ones for unions and Congressmen. Heh.

Gosh, and they don't even mention the fact that the entire civilized world covers their entire populations with BETTER coverage at a MUCH lower cost! What the fuck is wrong with America? Oh yes, some greedy asshole always has to make huge profits off the sick and dying. I always forget what disgusting people Republicans really are. Compromising with stupid just makes you more stupid. You would think people could remember that Medicare and Social Security were done over the dead bodies of dire warnings of Republicans, and now we cannot imagine life without these programs. Same exact thing will happen this time, and that is why the greedy pigs are screaming NO NO NO.

Requiring people to purchase high-deductible insurance(meaning no preventive care) under penalty of law from for-profit insurers.
I said this on another thread, but the Baucus plan accomplishes the impossible--uniting teabaggers and progressives in protest. Hey, it is bipartisan!

Exactly. Both sides now realize that giving the government anything (tax dollars, power) is like sending your check straight to our government's corporate masters.

Reform is not possible. We need to start over. In the upcoming election everyone should refuse to vote for an incumbent, period.

Well since the Dems are in the majority now the plan to throw out all the incumbents would be a good way to get a majority of Repubs back in power. That would be a complete disaster just like the last 8 years with Bush. The real solution to this is just elect more liberal Dems anywhere you can. Then educate people with facts facts facts! The biggest impediment to a decent system is just that idiots and liars confuse so many people that it is impossible to chicken shit Dems to do the right thing.

I support the tax on high-end health care plans.

One of the problems with today's health care market is that it's so unregulated that in some instances, employees (but mostly executives) are encouraged to use the health care system by not having any co-pays, having deluxe annual physicals and being able to see any specialist without a referral from a primary physician.

The end result is that healthy people use the system too often. Those who aren't healthy never use the system because they lack insurance.
