If his name was Tom Smith, both of his parents were born in America, he spent all of his childhood years in Philadelphia, he graduated from State U. and worked his way to the top without going through a nationally-renown and loathed political machine, there wouldn't be nearly this much animosity. There would be some, for sure, but not nearly this much.

Instead, he was born to a foreign Kenyan parent and a white mother from Kansas, he spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, he has a bachelors and JD from ivy league schools (remember that the righties hate affirmative action with a passion) and he came up through the Chicago political machine, which is associated with corruption and radicalism. In short, he's considered inauthentic and not a "real American."
