Seems like only yesterday, Democratic leaders were telling supporters they supported Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) because "he's with us on everything but the war in Iraq."

That maxim doesn't actually extend to health care, though. Lieberman has come out against a number of aspects of the Democrats' health care reform proposal, including the public option...despite strong support for the measure in Connecticut.

A new Research 2000 poll commissioned by Daily Kos finds that 68 percent of likely voters in Connecticut support a public option, while only 21 percent oppose.

Things get a bit more interesting, though, when you look at the internals.

Among Democrats, for the public option wins out wins out an astonishing 83-8 margin of support. And among independents, it's an almost as impressive 73-15. Only among Republicans does opposition outpace support, 33-55.

So Lieberman's advocating against the wishes of almost all Democrats and independents and about a third of all Republicans. Maybe that helps explains why, if the 2012 elections were held this year, he'd be in terrible shape.

Once again, I call upon all Americans (or at least TPMers) to join me in a cause on which I think we can mostly find common ground. And that is to yell a hearty, "FUCK YOU, JOE!!!"

Two words for ya. Cigna (Bloomfield, CT) and Aetna (Hartford).
Nutmeg Staters were dumb enough to re-elect this guy over Ned Lamont, now we're all stuck with him until 2012!

Or, in the spirit of my fellow traveler Xantar,

Once again, you fail to appreciate the Genius and Morality of the great Traitor Joe. I told you I would betray you when I was running against Ned Lamont, but you wouldn't listen. I signal my intentions every time I visit my corporate overlords at Fox News, and still you don't listen. Now will you believe me that I'm a total lying scumbag?

Love,
Joe

He IS in terrible shape! He is untrustworthy - even to his friends. He's an opportunist, who took Democratic money, balleyhoo, and support running for VP, then turns around and lives off McCain's money as he travels the country with him. He pretends to be religious, yet forgets the words of Hillel,"how you want to be treated, you should treat everybody." In Joe's private worship, that translates to, "support them making the biggest bucks so they can support you." And did I mention loyalty? Anyone who trusts this jerk will find him selling their mother! Congrats Connecticut!

Absolutely, not if I (voted for Ned TWICE) can have anything whatsoever to do with it. Though I think Ned is getting ready to run for governor, there will be a new senator three years from now.

Be careful what you ask for:

"What I was struck by was that not many people were paying attention to him," said Leo Canty, chairman of the Democratic town committee in Windsor, which passed a resolution in February opposing Senator Lieberman's support for the war. "It used to be that he would be more of a presence when he came in."

A few minutes later, however, the audience was riveted as Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the guest speaker at the $175-a-plate dinner, stood on the podium and began the customary round of recognition of candidates and incumbents in the room. When he got to Mr. Lieberman, who is his mentor in the Senate and who helped recruit him to speak at the event, the applause again was muted.

"I know that some in the party have differences with Joe," Senator Obama said, all but silencing the crowd. "I'm going to go ahead and say it. It's the elephant in the room. And Joe and I don't agree on everything. But what I know is, Joe Lieberman's a man with a good heart, with a keen intellect, who cares about the working families of America."

Then, with applause beginning to build, he finished the thought: "I am absolutely certain that Connecticut's going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the United States Senate."

That time, people cheered loudly."

Just to be clear on the timing. LIEberman begged then Sen. Obama to come to CT to support his failing primary campaign. Obama may have gotten a loud cheer then, but LIEberman still lost to Lamont(51.8%-48.2%) when only DEMS could voice their opinion. It was only after LIEberman entered the General Election AND got supported by R's, that he won. The R's in CT didn't even support their OWN candidate - Alan Schlesinger
