Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has just announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the late Ted Kennedy's Senate seat, becoming the first candidate to officially announce a campaign.
Coakley paid tribute to the late Kennedy. "As some have noted, no one can fill his shoes, but we must try to follow in his footsteps," said Coakley. "I think we all realize that the urgency of this time is clear, and it is that urgency that drives my decision. Today, I announce my candidate for the United States Senate."
It's interesting that Coakley has not waited for word from other potential candidates -- especially former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy, a son of Robert Kennedy and nephew of Ted Kennedy, who has been much speculated about as a possible player. Somebody had to get in first, and Coakley is it.

I know nothing about Coakley, but three cheers for her not waiting. We are still a democracy, aren't we? Dynastic succession should be the exception here, not the norm.

In Massachusetts Martha Coakley first came to prominence because of her relentless prosecution of Louise Woodward in the alleged baby-shaking death of Matthew Eappen. She obtained a murder conviction which was reduced by Judge Zoebel on appeal. She was also involved in a campaign to preserve the infamous Fells Acres convictions, part of the 1980s wave of prosecutions of alleged sexual abuse in day care centers.
Marth Coakley is no Ted Kennedy.

The article I read noted that she ducked a question on what the Legislature should do with the interim vacancy.
Could it be that she ducked because it is less than a sure thing?
Sheesh...I gotta cut back on reading Beutler posts. I'll be reading goat entrails before I know it

Hmm from comments she might not be the best candidate. But I agree a Senate seat is supposed to be won by election, not handed down through the generations like a fiefdom.
Same thing is happening in Delaware, where the current appointed senator is supposed to be a "place holder" for Biden's son to run.
Maybe when some one has been in the senate for 30 years or more, voters must feel the incumbent should be related to the new candidate.
