In the wake of objections by many on the right against President Obama's upcoming address to schoolchildren -- reminding them on the first day of school about the importance of education, and telling them to work hard -- many schools across the country are dealing with objections from parents who don't want their children exposed to such a harmful, socialist message.
"I don't recall ever having a sitting president addressing schoolchildren," said Andrew Palomo, the father of a student in suburban Chicago. "For major events, maybe, but not the first day of school. The whole thing makes me angry as an American."
It should be noted that Obama's address isn't really a new thing, though -- and furthermore, the subject matter of Obama's address is pretty tame compared to past Republican presidents. As DailyKosTV points out, George H.W. Bush gave an address on education policy -- not just education itself as a virtue -- to American classrooms in late 1991. And Media Matters notes that a lame-duck Ronald Reagan spoke via TV to schoolchildren in 1988, and promoted tax cuts during the course of the discussion.
So let's check out some other examples of outrage.
• As a precaution in Virginia, the state Department of Education has notified schools that they should be prepared to accommodate students whose parents don't want them seeing the speech.
• Also in Virginia, Loudon County will not be showing the speech -- though administrators say this is entirely due to logistical concerns, that principals already have a full day ahead of them.
• Denver-area mother Shanneen Barron is keeping her kids home from school on Tuesday. "Thinking about my kids in school having to listen to that just really upsets me," said Barron. "I'm an American. They are Americans, and I don't feel that's OK. I feel very scared to be in this country with our leadership right now."
• Houston-area parent Brett Curtis is also against the speech. "I think it's inappropriate because it smacks of political indoctrination of the worst kind," said Curtis. "It's not just a speech. It's a specific curriculum to go along with the speech directly from the president of the United States without review."
• And even a Republican elected official, Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, is speaking out. Kinder released a statement today bashing the address. Key quote:
While I have the utmost respect for the office of the president, and for this president, this public relations tactic has gone too far. The distribution of teaching curricula from the White House to the classroom clearly usurps the authority of our local school boards and school administrators.
We have seen the federal government intervene into our lives in ways that many of us thought we would never see. This is a clear infringement on the rights of our students and those of Missouri parents.
I believe that if parents choose to keep their children at home during this presentation, they should be able to do so without any consequences being imposed upon their children.

Exactly. They live for ignorance. Education and knowledge is their enemy. Heck, the irony is that those claiming that this is "socialist indoctrination" are just proving that they have no clue what so ever what a "socialist" is. They are simply regurgitating what they are told to think and say. Which is why things like this and the anti-health care idiots spread like wildfire. They don't have to think. They just repeat the blatant lies and hate they are told on Fox News, Rush, Hannity, Liddy, etc. And thereby show they have no ability for critical analysis.

Ah, but merely hearing him say things like "stay in school" and "work hard" and "I'm the president" could lead them to believe that he is, in fact, the president. Which is simply wrong and absurd because well, just, just look at him . . .

The wingnuts can't let their children see Barack Obama acting like a sane, sensible leader -- not when they've been raising the kiddies on a diet of Fox News and stories of how the president is a crazed authoritarian terrorist.

Even worse, he may attempt to claim he was born in Hawaii (and that Hawaii is in fact part of the United States). We can't have our kids hearing that nonsense!

We have seen the federal government intervene into our lives in ways that many of us thought we would never see.
For example, having an unaccountable high-level agency wiretapping calls in our country without a warrant! Oh wait, that was the guy you supported. Funny, I don't remember you complaining about federal government intrusion into your life under Bush.

So do I, Mrs. Barron. The Republicans have gone all soft in the head.

Excuse me, but pledging fealty to the President Obama is not "stay in school".
“I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama”
Would you want your child reciting, "I will be of service to George Bush? I don't think so."

it seems fairly well known, at least at the highest of the Republican offices, that the only true republican is the one seeking to dismantle and bring down the Obama administration. - God forbid than any true redblooded republican should offer to - or even mouth, or even hear the words to help - even by offering constructive criticism - would be anathema to the idealogy of subversive rightwing crazy indoctrination. better to bring it down than to help build something constructive and in any way beneficial.

These are the same folks that do not want science or any facts taught in school. They are of no consequence & should be ignored. Further, any parent failing to send their children to school should be criminally charged with child abuse-neglect & sentenced to jail time.

This is just hurtful. Our president is trying to motivate school children and the right turns it into something evil. I have sent a message to my son's principal to find out if they are showing the video at his school and if they are not I'm keeping him home to watch it. I'm an educator, so he and I will just go through the curriculum together.

It's a free country; if you don't want to learn anything, you don't have to, but ---then---the govn't might have to take care of you. Hah! But then your schools are in much better shape-if you go-than the children you hate so much. Then again, if you don't like school, you can bowl, but that takes money. Hmmm, life getws complicated doesn't it. No education, no $$, no government. What's a dumb person to do?

Wasn't GW reading a book to an elementary class on 9/11? Did anyone pull their kid out of that class?
And we really should have a more cogent discussion regarding exactly what socialism is. Everyone reacts in horror at the word, like they have heard the most vile profanity but when you ask them exactly why, there is no real answer. When you ask them how they think this country is actually run and where are our taxes actually going, they don't seem to know.
If you ask if they enjoyed the cash for clunkers program, or the $8000 incentive for first time home buyers, or cheap milk, cheap corn, cheap wheat--which is all subsidized by our taxes--if you ask them if they enjoy paying for the health insurance of every government worker even if they don't get any--if you ask them if they enjoyed the economic stimulation checks GW sent out to all of us, they don't seem to remember. And one of the only things to look forward to as I become an "older" American, is Medicare. That is all paid with by our taxes???? Huh.
And how many of us are getting slammed by increased state fees to register our car, inspect our car, renew our license, recycle our tires, bigger EazyPass bills, higher property taxes, higher school taxes. We have adopted many "socialistic" principles, only we really don't get to experience the benefits, like universal health care and better education systems and more humanitarian care of our mentally ill, handicapped and veterans. A democracy is strong because it is essentially based on socialistic principles of equality and fairness. A democracy is weakened if it blindly embraces purely capitalistic principles. We are a perfect example of that.

With Texas and the South leaving the Union and raising the Stars&Bars over their Capitals, what else could you expect???

After the President of the United States speaks to school children about the value of education, Republicans will make opposing comments extolling ignorance.
