An interesting new pattern has emerged from some Republicans. Both during and after yesterday's House admonishment of Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-SC) outburst of "You lie!" during President Obama's speech to Congress, GOP House members have been emerging to say that it was Obama who started the breach of decorum.
• After the vote was taken, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) declared on the House floor that Obama had insulted Congress, by saying that his opponents were lying about his health care proposals. "He comes in here talking about a lie ... He says we're making wild claims," said Gohmert. "That's no way to act when you're invited into somebody else's house."
It's interesting to see Gohmert take such a sudden interest in the gentlemanly etiquette of the House, considering how he too was heckling Obama during the speech -- albeit through the silent display of a sign, rather than shouting out:

• During the floor debate on the disapproval resolution, Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) said that Wilson had been right on the substance of the immigration question, and quoted the Bible in order to show how Obama had incited Wilson's anger:
"You know, the Old Book tells us, 'A harsh word stirs up anger.' Well we might have seen a little bit of that last week. In the midst of a highly partisan speech by the President of the United States, Joe made a mistake," said Pence. "Immediately, after the speech was over, Joe recognized his mistake and he offered his sincere apology to the President and the President's staff -- and he was right to apologize. But it's important to note that despite his admitted error, the broader national interest was actually served."
• Rep. Steve King (R-IA) also argued last night that Obama "threw the first punch":
"A lot of us said, well, this health care bill is gonna fund illegals, and the President said, 'Prominent politicians are lying to you.' He said that on the floor of the House of Representatives," King said. "I don't think there's ever been a President comes to the House of Representatives as a guest of the members of the House and makes a declaration like he did. I mean, the President threw the first punch."
And King said of Wilson: "God bless him. He said what we were thinking."

I'm sure the base will just lap this up. But it's a pretty stupid argument, given, you know, reality and video evidence. And it's about a week late, to boot. If they thought it was so disrespectful (uppity) for the President to say what he said, why didn't they immediately speak out, instead of trying to get Wilson to apologize.
But I'm sure PoLimDrudge will dutifully push this. Along with CNN: "Are Joe Wilson's supporters right? Should President Obama have said what he said? We'll be talking about this in 'Raw Politics' ". Sigh.

And the old book also says, King Solomon spite those who came up against him, which apparently give Obama the OK to wipe out the Republican party right.

Except for a core group of lunatics, this kind of message just makes the Republicans look bad to the American people. Keep it up, boys. This is what got you in the minority in the first place.

I live in Quebec and the current GOP is strangely familiar. Although the ideology is far-right, instead of far-left, otherwise the GOP is behaving like a separatist party. They openly admit they care only about their supporters, and their issues, the greater good doesn't matter and the parts of the country that don't vote GOP are actively treated as the enemy. Frankly the Bloq Quebecois, despite being committed to breaking up Canada, serves as a much more constructive and loyal opposition than the Republican currently do. Maybe that's why separatism gets more traction in Dallas than Montreal these days.

Gohmert, King, Pence, et al., suggest that Obama started it all by calling them liars first.
To be clear, President Obama only used the word "lie" in relation to the death panel nonsense.
With regard to the illegal immigrant issue, his words were: "There are also those who claim our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally."
The President did not call elected officials pushing the "health care reform will cover illegal immigrants" line liars. He said that such claims were false, which (a) they are, and (b) is keeping with the decorum of the House.

Exactly. There is a difference between calling a false statement a lie and calling a person a liar to his face. And I'm sure they know that, they're just not willing to admit it.

I noticed this Emerging Luntzism, too: Obama, said one back bencher on "Hardball" last night, was the first to use the word "lie" ("liar", whatever) in his speech to Congress. So, you see, that made it Okay for Wilson to spew.
Absent from his obviously coached pushback (whoever this Republican dude was, he didn't appear to have a brain you could find with an electron microscope) was the unspoken:
HELLO?!? THE GUY AT THE FRONT OF THE ROOM IS THE GUY WHO IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE ONE SPEAKING.
Dammit, they've moved the bar again! Now, perceived mitigating behavior on the part of the President deems all heckling acceptable.
(Except, of course, for the dovetailing meme that they're also pushing this week: "Well, the DEMOCRATS BOOED BUSH!!" See, that's not Okay..!)

I've been hearing that tired old whine for weeks now, DEMOCRATS booed the beloved Bush! I don't recall any such dastardly incidents and I'm a glutton for punishment. I watch all of the SoU speeches.
Has anybody seen videos, audio tracks or even contemporary newspaper articles (for what they're worth) decrying the bad Democrats and their raucous heckling of the Decider? I was always annoyed when the schlubs kept giving the prick standing ovations.
Discourtesy, that's Sooo Republican! Not so much the Milquetoast Party.

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is that when Bush made a complaint in the 2006(?) SOTU about his Social Security initiatives being knocked down, Democrats broke into applause, and maybe even some cheering. Bush looked annoyed.

Keith, it doesn't matter whether any House Dems actually booed Bush. All that matters is that it feels like they probably did - that's what their gut tells them. Truthiness, and all that.
Truth doesn't matter - they just invent anything that will fit their narrative.

Somebody tell Gohmert it's not his house. You spend all summer making wild inaccurate accusations you're gonna get called out. And when you're called out for lying you should take it like an adult.

This "He started it!" is exactly what they will claim if they succeed, heaven forbid, in provoking an assassination attempt.
They'll say what he did was the equivalent of shouting fire in a crowded theater and it's too bad (or maybe actually kinda good) and the main thing is he provoked it.
Don't let them get away with any of this. They are nothing but bigots and seditionists, trying to overturn an election by every means available to them and they are treasonous. Carter got in their faces; we can too.

This is a standard, foul, right-wing authoritarian tactic:
- Don't say "I'm bigoted against gays and don't want them to have equal rights," say "There's a homosexual agenda and they started it and I'm only fighting back in self-defense!!!"
- Don't say "I want America to be a fundamentalist Christian theocracy," say "There's a War on Christmas and the SPs are out to get us and they started it and I'm only fighting back in self-defense!!!"
- Don't say "I want to smear John Kerry and call his bravery and service into question so he loses the '04 election" say "John Kerry came back from Viet Nam and spoke out against his fellow soldiers, so he started it and I'm only fighting back in self-defense!!!"
- Don't say "I hate liberals and I have no respect for the rule of law and if I don't win, I'm taking my ball and going home and pouting," say "Obama and the socialists are out to take away our freedoms and DESTROY AMERICA!!! They started it and I'm only fighting back in self-defense!!!"
Always claim the other guy started it -- that way, no matter how ruthless or extreme you get in your rhetoric or your actions, you can still project a sense of arrogant self-righteousness -- even if you threw the first punch.
These people truly are scum.

i agree with pretty much all of that except the "taking my ball and going home and pouting" bit.
i would have preferred that the republicans take their ball, go home, and pout by themselves. at least, i would have preferred it to what they are ACTUALLY doing, which is actively trying to sabotage every facet of the United States government.
they didn't take their ball and go anywhere. they put down their ball, picked up a key and a switchblade, and started scratching paint and slashing tires.

So who's lying and who's telling the truth?
And what IS the truth?
There are plenty on the right who will not believe anything that comes out of the mainstream media, which means they have no choice but to believe Fox and Limbaugh and Newsmax, et al. THAT is the truth to them
There is no way to argue rationally with that kind of thinking.
Then you have a bill (or various bills) that are so long and so full of legalese that they can be interpreted anyway a pundit wants.
I see no cure.
