A new Marist poll of New York finds that New Yorkers overwhelmingly object to President Obama reportedly telling Gov. David Paterson not to run -- even as they themselves don't want Paterson to run!

Only 27% of registered voters believe the White House's alleged request was right, with 62% saying it was wrong. Among Democrats, only 36% say it was right, with 51% saying it was wrong. A follow-up question asked about the idea of Paterson hurting the whole Democratic ticket, and whether they still think it was right or wrong for the White House to intervene -- and here the top-line is 30%-60%, with a 42%-48% breakdown among Democrats.

Respondents were also asked whether they want Paterson to run: Yes 25%, No 63%, with a 26%-65% figure among Democrats.

Appropriately, the Marist press release has this title: "NY Voters to Obama, 'Mind Your Business.'"

So who leaked it and why? Nobody wins with this leak. Did Paterson believe there would be a groundswell of support for him? What would Cuomo gain? Show the White House was against Paterson - so what? If Paterson was looking for something in return, this going public killed that possibility i.e. a Administration job.

Did a Republican operative get wind and leak it? Just to throw a wrench into everything?

As an Independent (the Bernie Sanders kind, not the Lieberschmuck kind), I'm somewhat confused: I thought that the Dems didn't walk in lockstep like the Repubs. Obama tells the MA legislature to screw around with the senator replacement law and the MA legislature obliges. Yet, Obama tells Paterson not to run and Paterson balks. Didn't Paterson get the memo or is he an authentic Democrat?

Obama didn't tell the Mass legislature to do anything. Ted Kennedy wrote a letter before he died asking for the change so his seat wouldn't be empty if he died before healthcare was done. They were discussing it when he did die, and went ahead and followed his wishes.

Obama gave Patrick a call last week urging him to get Murray on board. Murray got on board last week.

The partisan breakdown on this is kind of funny if you think about it.

From a very great distance it looks to me as though the point of this exercise is to give Andrew Cuomo cover when he announces that he intends to challenge Paterson in the primary.

Oops, didn't intend to respond to ready...'s comment. Meant it as a stand alone (?) comment.
