Obama: More Work To Be Done On Economy
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama discussed the upcoming G-20 Summit, and the need for more financial regulations to avoid a repeat of the economic crisis:
In the weeks and months ahead, we have an opportunity to build on the work we've already done. An opportunity to rebuild our global economy stronger that before. An opportunity not only to protect the American people and America's economy, but to promote sustained and balanced growth and prosperity for our nation and all nations. And that's an opportunity I am determined to seize.
Myrick: Government Run Health Care Means Delay, Death
In this weekend's Republican address, Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) discussed her experience as a breast cancer survivor, warned that government-run health care would lead to delayed care and death:
"Under the government-run health care system they have in Canada and the United Kingdom, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to get those tests so quickly," said Myrick. "One international study found that three times as many citizens in those countries wait longer than a month to see a specialist. When it comes to life-threatening diseases like cancer, delay could mean death."
Obama: Race Not "Overriding Issue" In Criticism
In his interview with CNN's State of the Union, President Obama denied that racism is a dominant factor in criticism against him. "Are there people out there who don't like me because of race? I'm sure there are. That's not the overriding issue here," said Obama. "I think there are people who are anti-government. I think there's been a long-standing debate in this country that is usually that much more fierce during times of transition, or when presidents are trying to bring about big changes."
WaPo: Hillary A Team Player Who Stands Apart
The Washington Post profiles Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, painting a complex picture: "The portrait that emerges from interviews and from the observation of Clinton's early tenure is one of an intensely political figure who wants to remain above the fray of day-to-day diplomacy and to work well with her fellow Cabinet members, but who also wants to stand alone from time to time."
AP: Obama Rolling Into Week Of High Diplomatic Stakes
The Associated Press says that President Obama faces high diplomatic stakes at this week's G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh: "Obama is under pressure to push along stalled Mideast peace, prove the United States is serious about climate change and rally allies against the nuclear threats of Iran and North Korea. Restless leaders in Europe and elsewhere are pressing Obama to reform risky U.S. financial behavior and get Congress on board."
Wilson Makes False Statement About Past Relationship With Clyburn
Roll Call reports that Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) falsely claimed to have supported House Majority Whip James Clyburn's (D-SC) daughter for a state position in the 1990's, as evidence of a past friendship with Clyburn. "I was also pleased to support Jim Clyburn's daughter, Mignon, in 1998 when I helped to gain support, as a state Senator, for her appointment to serve on the Public Service Commission," Wilson said -- though voting records showed he had supported a different candidate. A Wilson aide acknowledged that Wilson made a mistake: "He honestly thought he had voted in favor of her."
Frank Backs Capuano For Senate
Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) has endorsed his fellow Massachusetts Congressman Mike Capuano in the special election for Ted Kennedy's Senate seat. "I cannot think of anything the United States Senate needs more than a strong dose of the commitment, energy and appropriate skepticism of established traditions that Mike Capuano has shown in his 10 years in the House," said Frank.
Palin Fan Wins Dinner Auction With $63,500
The eBay auction to win a dinner with Sarah Palin has ended, with a final bid of $63,500. The winner was Cathy Maples, a defense contractor from Huntsville, Alabama, who describes herself as a "big advocate" of Palin. The proceeds from the auction will go to a charity that aids wounded veterans.

"The proceeds from the (have dinner with Palin) auction will go to a charity that aids wounded veterans."
Right, sure they will. Just like Sarah's $150K campaign clothes were going to be given away and now no one knows what happened to them.

OK, I normally try to stay away from fashion commentary, but I cannot stay silent on this one: what is with that spider crawling up Myrick's shoulder? I couldn't pay attention to what she was saying because I was expecting her to to notice it and start screaming in horror any minute.

It would be nice to know more about her white-hot allegations, though I'm *certain* that as a cancer survivor herself she would obviously have the decency and respect for others to choose carefully the report she quoted and not exaggerate. I just know she wouldn't play around with an issue of such grave importance; she couldn't possibly be that low.

Who do you think you're kidding? (1) My wife waited THREE fucking months to see a specialist when she blew out her ACL 2 years ago. And that's WITH non-profit insurance (Kaiser) on their platinum plan! It took another 3 months to actually get the surgery.
And (2), nice parsing of words there. There's a difference between emergency and non-emergency care. I notice you didn't claim that they wait longer than a month for life-threatening issues, you just happen to mention it in the same sentence. Kind of like W. did with 9/11 and Iraq. I'm sure Karl Rove is proud.

I am sooooo sick and tired of the lies and distortions coming from the repukes. I actually know of people who have had to delay and wait and wait and delay for treatment for breast cancer. What a horrible lie and distortion. What about all the people who die because of no insurance or the criminal insurance industry refusing to pay claims. I hope she rots in hell.
How do these people sleep at night? I really don't know how they do.

Since they are already whining about single payer, I say the dems should just ram single payer through. Why not? The repukes are lying about it already. Give them what they want.
Then in 2 years after the people see how great it is, Obama can win in a landslide and wipe out the repukes, other than in the south. Then, Perry can be the fearless leader of the new confederacy comprised of 3 or 4 hardcore states in the central part of the south, say alabama, mississippi and one or two others and they can secede. AMF. It would save the rest of us a ton of money.

Prior to the end of the auction, they knew enough to change the venue of the dinner to Alabama, home of the winning Palinbot, Cathy Maples. Looks like the auction outcome may have been pre-determined.

Sarah reserved the right to refuse to honor the terms if she didn't like the winner. There was a Palin critic who was winning the auction until the fangirl from Alabama came along. Sarah couldn't be bothered to spend time with someone who disagreed with her, no matter what the cause of the charity.

"Under the government-run health care system they have in Canada and the United Kingdom... (blah blah blah)"
of course nothing actually being proposed creates a health care system like they have in either canada OR in the UK. and the system they have in canada (a type of single payer, like medicare is here in the US) is not the same as they have in the UK (actually government-run, like the V.A. is here in the US).
and virtually no one in either the UK or canada would prefer to have what we have here in the US (private, largely for-profit, health insurance) because, for one thing, access to specialists is restricted and rationed by insurance companies.

Rep. Myrick said that it is well worth 63 grand to get the low-down on "Death Panels". Especially those created in Alaska. Abstinence & Pro-life issues will also be amongst the small talk at dinner.
It has not been confirmed that Moose & a nice sauteed wolf will be the main course.

I hope someone will fact-check Myrick. This is the same old distortion we've been hearing for 60 years. My understanding is that, in most countries with UHC, there may be a waiting list for elective procedures as a cost-saving measure, but emergency care is handled immediately.
One thing the right never mentions is that the infmous "waiting lists" for things like hip operations are in fact cost-control measures - exactly what this right is always saying are needed.
They also ignore the fact that, even in countries with "socialized medicine" like Britain, there is usually the option to buy private insurance and use private clinics. After all, it you're seriously wealthy, you don't realy need insurance, do you?
