Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is not ready to accept a trigger option in place of a public option, she said today at a press conference.
"And the evidence seems to point, at this caucus that I just went to, that a trigger is an excuse for not doing anything," she said, reports Greg Sargent. "But everybody is open to listening to what people have to say. The point was made over and over again that for one reason or another the trigger was not effective in the Medicare Part D bill."
But, reports The Hill, she said, "I don't even want to talk about a trigger."
Pelosi has said a bill without a public option will not pass the House. Today's comments seem to show that the trigger would not be an acceptable substituted.
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) backs the trigger option, and the White House has reportedly been trying to convince progressive groups to do the same.

Trigger this. We will bring all our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan if it costs to much in lives and dollars without any chance success within 3 months.

She's on the money. Do they really think people who want a public option (most people) will be tricked into thinking a trigger could be pulled against entrenched corporate interests? Now, the American people might be ill-informed; they're mis-informed on a daily basis. But I don't think they're quite that gullible.
Dems should be getting behind a robust, national public option on its merits: prices will continue to skyrocket without one. And if prices continue to rise, the legislation will be seen for what it is, a dismal failure. People will get upset. They'll say health care reform under the Dems didn't work. Score a few electoral points for the Republicans, especially those in Blue Dog States.
Rahm and Reid need to twist a few arms.

Yes!
The talk of a trigger is an insult to our intelligence... an attempt to 'appear' to be giving the public what they want while actually doing nothing.
I've written to Senator Snowe several times about this.
Thank you Speaker Pelosi!

One word describes the current health care industry in America.
Barbaric.
In fact the current health insurers are more barbaric than any program during the Dark Ages.
The fact we are still debating how to protect the profits of companies that are derived from the corpses of American citizens is barbaric.
And its sad.
Anyone got tips on how to emigrate?

To all and sundry who regard a trigger as "better than nothing" consider this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/08/washington/08drug.html
We are all free to import cheaper Canadian pharmaceuticals just as soon as the HHS Secretary (currently Kathleen Sebelius) certifies they are safe. Since Health Canada, the Canadian FDA, already reviews and establishes the safety of all drugs, this is merely a matter of setting up a liaison with the FDA, right? Right?
Where are cheap Canadian drugs?
Nowhere.
It is scandalous (but predictable) that Bush's Mike Leavitt would not lift a finger to fulfill his duty, but how about Obama's Kathleen Sibelius?
Oh wait, I know!
She is going to wait until the day after health care reform passes, and Pharma lobbying is no longer in play, and announce that the legally enforced monopoly market will be thrown open to competition.
And of course all of the free market advocates on the Right will cheer their approval.
(The last two paragraphs are intended to be irony, if the fantasy of the Right cheering anything helping consumers did not tip you off.)

Oh my, I just coped a gander at the "Freedom of information Act" request for HUD docs.: Grants, misconduct, partnerships..
Transparency takes a lawsuit with this administration.
This is not what the Speaker wanted to come to light. Its seem every Friday evening the new cycle seent to throw up a little blood.
