A new Rasmussen poll of California finds that of the two Democratic candidates for governor, state Attorney General Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Brown is currently much more electable than Newsom.
The poll tested Brown, who was himself governor in the 1970's and early 1980's, leads all three Republicans: Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, and former Rep. Tom Campbell. Newsom, on the other hand, trails all three Republicans -- though the pollster's analysis suggests that this could change if Newsom were to actually win the nomination, given the state's Democratic leanings.
The numbers:
• Brown (D) 44%, Whitman (R) 35%
• Brown (D) 45%, Poizner (R) 32%
• Brown (D) 44%, Campbell (R) 34%
• Whitman (R) 41%, Newsom (D) 36%
• Poizner (R) 40%, Newsom (D) 36%
• Campbell (R) 42%, Newsom (D) 36%
From the pollster's analysis: "The fact that results are so similar regardless of which Republican candidate is mentioned suggests that the race at this point is all about the Democrats. That's not surprising given the solid Democratic nature of California."

Go Gavin Go!
I would gladly take either Newsom or Brown but if you want to take a giant progressive leap forward I would prefer Newsom. California has a huge Democratic majority legislature and all we need now is a super liberal Governor to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN!

If I were in California I'd vote Newsom in a heartbeat-- and I supported Brown for pres in 1992. Not only is Brown generally out of touch with how campaigns are run, he's turned into a drug warrior, wanting to keep drug offenders in prison and opposing decriminalization. This while a budget shortfall is going to force the release of sex offenders.
Newsom may be the harder one to elect, but he won't sell liberal values down the river for the sake of convenience.

Well, that certainly explains how he lost his race to become California Attorney Genera - d'oh!
Well, I'd only offer that serving as mayor of Oakland, CA for eight years would give even the most die-hard left-wing liberal a different perspective on the drug problem that has plagued our cities.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Newsom fired his long time guru and best buddy Eric Jaye. Hired Garry South and was out last week with a campaign to raise $$$ off of Meg Whitman's announcement
And
The Sacramento Bee discovered that ole Meg hadn't bothered to even register to vote until 2002....
Dan Balz picked that up over the weekend
Yes WaPo Dan Balz!!

He's hired Garry South? That's terrible. I'm very disappointed in Gavin Newsom.
Democratic political shakedown artists - er, excuse me, "advisors" - such as Garry South, Richie Ross and Gale Kauffman comprise collectively the political ceiling that precludes California Democrats from ever being able to rise to their true potential.
