Two new polls find that appointed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) could be in for a real fight in her 2010 campaign.

The new Rasmussen poll has Gillibrand just barely leading Republican former Gov. George Pataki, who has not gotten into the race as of yet: Gillibrand 44%, Pataki 41%, within the ±4.5% margin of error.

The Marist poll has Pataki ahead: Pataki 45%, Gillibrand 41%, with a ±4% margin of error. Rudy Giuliani, who is widely expected to run for governor, also leads Gillibrand in a trial match-up: Giuliani 51%, Gillibrand 40%.

Should we be more worried about Giuliani beating Paterson or beating Gillibrand?

Has there ever been a Rasmussen poll showing a Repub getting crushed?

I didn't think so...those never get published.

Gillibrand's problem is still name recognition. She has never run for statewide office. This is one of the reasons why I think clearing the field of any primary challengers for her is a mistake. She needs to get her name out as much as possible.

I think she's pretty safe though.

Um, yeah - she's in a close reach with a pollster's daydream. Giuliani won't run or won't seriously run and Pataki might run but then people will remember he's George Pataki and that will be the end of that.

Why does anyone even bother to read Rasmussen polls? They are so in the bag for the GOPs...they are the Republican Party's own version of the Dallas Cheerleaders!

Hmm. Let's see -- Pataki was governor for three consecutive four year terms, certainly a well-known New York politician. And Senator Gillibrand, in statewide office since January, leads him?
And Guiliani, who was on the national stage in 2007, and has been a fixture in New York (if not in his marriages) for decades, barely breaks ahead of the margin of error? I'd say Gillibrand is in good shape against the best (yikes!) the GOP has to offer.

Blame the pollsters all you want, but Gillibrand is in trouble because voters don't know what she stands for -- and that's her fault, not ours. She's been flip-flopping on one issue after another (gun control, tobacco, immigration, gay marriage) and Democrats are increasingly concerned about her apparent lack of any core values.

I wish we had a more progressive Democratic candidate that could provide a greater contrast to the Republicans -- somebody who could really excite the base of the party. If that doesn't happen, I'm afraid we could be in real trouble next November.
