The Boston Globe reports that Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley picked up nomination papers for Senate this morning, from the Secretary of State's office -- launching a campaign for Ted Kennedy's Senate seat.
This would make Coakley the first candidate to officially get in the race since Kennedy's death..
TPM has placed requests for comment with Coakley's campaign committee and the state Attorney General's office.

I hope she's ambitious enough to take on Joe Kennedy in the primary if necessary.

You think Joe and not Ted Jr.? Hmm. I was really hoping the family would push for the latter. Which, I admit I'm doing just on the basis of a eulogy by a guy who's heretofore resoutely stayed out of the politics and the public eye but, hey, it's not my state so I have the privilege of making sentimental gut calls that comes with the absence of responsibility.

Joe's already been bitten by the bug and I suspect that he thinks that he's spent enough time in the wilderness to pay for his past indiscretions. Massachusetts loves a Kennedy, but needs experience and a certain ruthlessness and Joe's got the chops. Ted Jr. is a nice guy, but if not Joe, then Martha C. would slice 'n' dice him in the primary.
Personally (and as a New Yorker exiled in Red Sux hell), I think it's time for the end of dynasty politics. The Kennedys have had their day (thanks to Ted), but we don't need royalty. We need one of us in the Senate.
Go Martha!

I agree in general about dynasty politics, but Joe is the one member of the family who I think would be up to the task (I don't know about Ted Jr.). He was just starting to really get into his groove in Congress when he quit. He hasn't sounded very enthusiastic about it, but if he does run I think he could become like Ted; he has the same kind of drive and passion, not like Patrick, Kathleen, Caroline, etc. who kind of slouch into politics. He was certainly better than any of the current crop of Mass. representatives, with the exception of Frank.

Tough lady would slice and dice the nice guy? Why does that sound so familiar?
