Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-SC) Democratic opponent, Iraq War veteran Rob Miller, has released this statement, thanking people for the hundreds of thousands of dollars he's received since Wilson's "You lie!" outburst:
Representative Joe Wilson's stunning behavior last night exemplifies all that is wrong in Washington DC. Time and time again, instead of real solutions to help South Carolina families, we see more partisan politics and petty name-calling.
As a former Marine, I believe we should respect our Commander-in-Chief and our men and women in uniform. As a South Carolinian, I believe that Representative Wilson's shameful outburst has no place in the public debate. We need a Representative in Congress who will be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
I am proud to have received the support of thousands more hardworking people who believe we need to change the way things are done in Washington DC. The outpouring of support has truly been humbling. I look forward to working to bring back common-sense leadership and fighting for the hardworking families of South Carolina.

Tsk. I recall it was a little boy who cried out that the Emperor had no clothes on. Wilson will likely hold that seat as long as he wants it.

dude,
Whats this with no clothes on ... little boy's seat?
I don't like Wilson either, but I think you may have him confused with another R-SC politician.

Wilson is an idiot and Miller now has $400,000 in campaign contributions he didn't have yesterday. No wonder Wilson looked like he was gonna cry on teevee today.

Closer to $500,000 now. And with this early money will come institutional attention and support, and the ability to target and raise money from the big dollar donor crowd.
I'd say Miller, with work and focus, can have a budget in excess of $2.5 million for this campaign now - where 24 hours ago he was undoubtedly struggling to figure out how to get it to $1 million.

Of course the little boy who cried out about the emperor had a big advantage over Wilson - he wasn't making anything up. The emperor really wasn't wearing any clothes, whereas Wilson chose to have his childish outburst in response to a demonstrably accurate statement by the President.
Joe Wilson is suddenly in trouble in what should be a relatively safe Republican seat (although it is more marginal than most people realize, Obama won 45% of the vote there in 2008, and Miller took 46%) -- not only will Rob Miller have plenty of money to run a much better funded race than he did in 2008 (when he came surprisingly close), but it will bring a lot of unfavorable attention to many other parts of Wilson's erratic record. In a district with a large African-American population, and a very large military presence, such open disrespect for the commander-in-chief invites a strong backlash.
Already we are learning today about a bunch of previously undisclosed loans and financial problems. His comments insulting the woman who came forward to disclose she was the daughter of Strom Thurmond and his African-American maid will be reprised. Voters in his district will see videos of him losing it on C-SPAN and shouting repeatedly at a Democratic congressman about his "hatred of America." Doubtless more videos will surprise of Wilson acting inappropriately and bizarrely.
I wouldn't be surprise to see the Congressman deciding sometime in the next few months that he wants to "spend more time with his family." If he chooses to run again, he is in for a very very tough race.

One other thing to note - Wes Clark has gathered over 700 contributions on ActBlue for Miller. Looks like the Army is coming in to help the Marine. That's a very nice bit of work by Gen'l Clark.

The Clark item is a nice note.
I do enjoy that Miller is essentially pulling back him apology. Read between the lines material.
One can also imagine the hissy fit the GOP would throw if a Dem did thing during a SOU Address of W.

In 2004 Bush won Wilson's district by 20 points. In 2008 Wilson got about 52% of the vote and beat the underfunded Miller. It could be that Wilson will be the underfunded candidate in 2010.
Not to mention that this controversy has increased how closely the previously unknown Joe Wilson is being examined. CQ dug through his financial filings today and has concluded that Joe has some personal financial problems.
