Snowe: Obama Flexible on the Public Option

Appearing on CNBC today, Senate Finance Committee member Olympia Snowe (R-ME) had some very flattering things to say about President Obama and his approach to health care--particularly with respect to his willingness to compromise on the public option and other issues.

"He's been very realistic in his views on health care," she said. "And he understands that there are fundamental differences and disparate views and how controversial they can be. The fact is, I've gotten the impression he would probably do less than more."

On the public option, she added "I've sensed from the outset that he might be far more flexible on that question."

Many months ago when I had an initial discussion with him on health care itself.

But also, in the ensuing conversations, he has seemed to, you know, understand others' views. He obviously puts it forward, because that's been his position. But I think he's always indicated a willingness to be flexible on this and other issues, and taking into account, you know, different views on the subject.... [H]e certainly was more than willing to listen to my views.

We've known for a long time now that Snowe has been in discussions with the administration and Democratic leaders--but it seems that the President has left quite the impression on her. She has long been a proponent of a triggered public option, which explains, in part, why that measure has been the focus of so much discussion the last couple weeks. Separately--and promisingly for liberals--she's also an advocate of expanding subsidies to help middle class people buy insurance, though she's suggested she wants a bill with a low price tag, and it's hard to square those two desires.

Less promisingly, she's also reportedly a proponent of one of the very worst policies in the Senate Finance Committee's legislation.

It may very well be the case that Obama, despite repeated references to the importance of a public option, will jettison it, and Snowe's assessment about "doing less" would be correct.

However.

We pay attention to those things that confirm what we already believe, and ignore information that contradicts what we believe. Snowe wants Obama to be flexible, AND to appear to have been convinced by Snowe, so that's what she's going to focus on.

Yep. I'm beginning to feel like the interim week between Baucus' press conference and committee markup will proceed like August recess. Big news, interrupted by no news, then small news getting blown up and interpreted to no end.

Next indicator of where things are will be the amendment process, but I've been more optimistic the more I've learned about the procedural steps the WH and Senate leadership are preparing.

30 million guaranteed customers for the insurance companies paid for by tax-payer subsidies. I guess that's a KIND of public option.

I am so disgusted by the constant framing of this in which jettisoning the public option is seen as being 'flexible'. When does the other side finally get to demonstrate just how 'flexible' they are? Oh that's right, they don't have to demonstrate that, because they got their clocks cleaned in the last two elections. The losers naturally get to hold firm, while the winners have to concede.

Fucking Democrats.

Yeah, well why can’t she be flexible on the public option? She wants everything and everyone to flex in her direction. What is she giving up?

Not exactly. She shares our goals on EVERYTHING else. Except the Public option. That's part of the whole Republican-Democrat divide. Has been from the beginning of the parties. Republicans want less federal government, more state control. Democrats want more.
