John Ensign (R-NV), a member of the Senate Finance Committee and recent scandal-maker, has submitted 30 amendments for the committee's version of the health care reform bill, the Las Vegas Sun reports.

Most of these changes, which will be voted on in hearings that began this morning, are plays to the conservative base. One would guarantee that seniors wouldn't be dropped from Medicare Advantage and be forced to go on a different government plan. Another would replace the word "fee" with the word "tax" in the bill. One would prohibit funding to ACORN; another would require new health czars be confirmed by the Senate. One would require Social Security cards to be shown in order to get subsidies to buy insurance, in order to prevent illegal immigrants from getting such subsidies.

Ensign seems to be trying to rebuild the support of conservative voters, support that took a beating in Ensign's highly publicized love triangle in which he slept with a staffer, fired her, and then had his wealthy parents pay off both her and her husband, also a former staffer.

He also may be trying to re-assert himself legislatively after laying low after the scandal and resigning as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.

Do any of the amendments require retinal scans or DNA samples for anyone looking somewhat brownish?

Is this the same conservative Republican that admitted to humping his friend's wife then hiring their teenage son as a consultant? Or is this the same conservative Republican that admitted to humping his friend's wife and his parents had to pay her off to keep her silent?

No, Senator Ensign, for the hundredth time--you may NOT use funds from the health care reform bill as hush money to your mistress and her husband.

He checked off all the boxes on the GOP's Obstruction of Health Care Reform form, including taking a shot at ACORN, the GOP chew-toy of the season.

Having read the article in the paper via the link, I was struck by this comment... "“These are huge issues,” said the GOP Senate leadership aide. “These are core issues that almost every Republican in Congress cares about.”

So, ACORN funding via the healthcare bill is huge, the word tax instead of fee is huge, czars are huge, hispanics having Social Security cards is huge (let's face it, they would be the only populace to be carded if this passes) meaning xenophobia is huge...

Is it really any wonder why the GOP is the minority party? With priorities THIS FAR out of whack, they really do deserve it.

Ok, so does anyone else have an issue with this picture of ensign (halo and all)? Creepy.

Even before seeing your remark I specifically signed on the comment on the preposterousness of his inadvertant canonization. This guy's no saint.

It's a domed ceiling, somewhere in congress I assume. The positioning does suggests that the photo was specifically staged for this effect but the original photo wasn't cropped as closely and so was easier to discern for what it was.

Sorry for the anal response, that's just how I roll. (Had the same conclusion as you a couple weeks ago when I first saw the original photo.)

A Dem really does need to propose a "no use of healthcare subsidies to pay off mistress's husband" amendment. Might as well go to town on the BS.

He's been laying low for a while, alright. That's the nature of the problem. He also submitted amendments to any further eating of acorns by squirrels, collecting acorns, Hitler, pulling plugs on Grandmas, ending wars & exposing hypocrit family value senators that get caught with their pants down but but can afford to pay-off their mistresses then lie through their teeth about it & claim religion.

How about an amendment to investigate fornicators who fornicate with other peoples wives, then, hire the skanks son, and then, has their parents pay said skank and her family $94,000! Give it up pervert and keep it zipped. What is with the GOP. Are all of their wives ugly!

I would say that should be LYING low, but in Ensign's case I guess either applies!

Someone needs to offer an amendment to the Ensign amendment changing the word "tax" to "parental gift" everywhere it appears.

Wow. I see one I actually agree with. No, no---two. Seniors shouldn't be forced off their plans, and proof of citizenship should be required.

Am I coming down with the Rethuglican, or did he just speak a little common sense?
