U.S. Plans To Isolate Iran If Nuclear Talks Fail
The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration is preparing to further cut Iran's economic links with the rest of the world: "While officials stress that they hope Iran will agree to open its nuclear program to inspection, they are prepared by year's end to make it increasingly difficult for Iranian companies to ship goods around the world. The administration is targeting, in particular, the insurance and reinsurance companies that underwrite the risk of such transactions."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama and Vice President Biden will meet at 11:30 a.m. ET with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Obama and Vice President Biden will meet at 4:30 p.m. ET with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will attend President Obama's meetings as listed above. At 6 p.m. ET, Biden and his wife Jill will host a reception at the Naval Observatory, in honor of the 15th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, which was originally authored by then-Senator Joe Biden.

Michelle Obama: President's Appeal For Olympics Sends Good Message
First Lady Michelle Obama told reports that her husband's trip to Copenhagen to appeal for the Olympics is a positive thing, rebutting criticism that he's taking time away from health care reform and other priorities. "Having the leader of the free world there supporting the bid sends a good message," said the First Lady. "It will demonstrate to the I.O.C. that this bid has unprecedented commitment throughout our government."

"Palin Paradox" Felt Among GOP Officials
The Politico surveyed prominent Republican party officials from across the country, finding a very mixed view of Sarah Palin -- the base loves her, but at the same time there is considerable uncertainty about her. New Hampshire GOP chairman Fergus Cullen dubbed it the "Palin Paradox." "If you were a candidate, you'd still want her to be campaigning with you because she would attract the crowds," Cullen said, but also adding: "How can you quit without finishing your first term and then ask us to entrust the presidency to you?"

Romney Staying Plugged Into Capitol Hill GOP
Roll Call reports that Mitt Romney is staying in touch with Congressional Republicans, in apparent preparation for another run for president: "Romney, who lost the 2008 presidential nomination to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), has kept up a full campaign-like travel schedule and donated to Republican candidates through his Free and Strong America political action committee. But Romney has also managed to remain a fixture on Capitol Hill."

House GOP Extending Target List For 2010
The Hill reports that House Republicans are working to expand their target list for 2010, to include seemingly safe Democratic incumbents whose districts have nevertheless trended Republican: Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA), and Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV). Said Missouri state Sen. Bill Stouffer, one of the GOP challengers to Skelton: "My beef is with the leadership of Congress, and the only way the 4th district can have their say about the leadership is to change their congressman."

Seconded.

However, I don't believe this guy reads any of the comments here, so our efforts are kind of wasted. And my repeated pleas to the TPM folks have also been ignored.

So after being slammed for going on five talk shows to push health care and his other plans, he's accused of not doing anything because of a 1 or 2 day break to push for the Olympics.

Exactly right. No matter what he does, the villager morons are going to carp and whine. As the old joke goes, if he walked on water, the headline would be "President Can't Swim!"

Good point Moose! As for the Missouri 4th District, never count Ike Skelton out. He knows his district very well. And I STILL predict that if a good health care bill is passed, it's going to help Dems in Congress, not hurt them.

No doubt. And on the flip side of that equation, failure to pass a bill -- or passage of watered-down legislation with inadequate subsidies so people are forced to buy insurance they can't afford -- will doom Democrats in Congress, with the Blue Dogs the first to go.

Well golly, he'll be cooped up on that primitive airplane all by himself, without any of his staff or advisors and absolutely no access to any kind of communications or data networks. How can he possibly get any work done if he's not in D.C.?

I was surprised that Palin is titling her book "Going Rogue" Isn't that an admission that the criticisms about her suborning the McCain campaign for her benefit are true? Didn't she deny going rogue when the allegations came out?

Seems like another example of Palin not quite understanding English.

Is being thought of as 'going rogue' a good thing or a bad thing? In the Bizarro world of Palin's base, it can be both at the same time.

Her various fuck-ups and outright failures can easily be spun as positive things to her gullible fan club ... when she quit her term as governor, it's "not politics as usual." When she can't successfully navigate basic campaigning, it's because she's a "maverick."

She attracts the sort of voters who are apparently EAGER to be pandered to, and have their intelligence insulted.

Well put. Yes, there's this sick sociopathic authoritarian streak that exists, to some degree, in all of us, in that we're all susceptible to the instinct that says "That source is telling you something you WANT to be true -- so trust them!", or more generally, to ignore (or not understand) logical flaws in the arguments put forward by one's "leaders". The difference is between the people with the intelligence or wisdom or experience or humility to recognize when that's happening and take steps to avoid it, and the people who gleefully indulge their own preconceptions and boost their leaders no matter what they do or say. "My tribe, right or wrong!"

"Yep, we don't think we're better than other people, the way those cityfolk do... and that's what makes us better than them!"

Wow. Cutting off their access to shipping insurance and reinsurance markets would do more harm to their economy than any sanction levied since the Hostage Crisis. It would be the next thing to blockading their ports and land routes in its effect. And yet, it's exactly the kind of thing that our boneheaded chickenhawk neocons will denounce as weakness and that Ahmadinejad and his clique of boneheaded Revoutionary Guard goons will dismiss as irrelevant until its too late.
