Numerous reports now suggest that President Obama's health care speech tonight will include a fairly ringing endorsement of--though not a demand for--a public option. And though from all accounts, Obama's position on the public option (supportive, but not insistent) will remain unchanged, the development might come as a surprise to those who were paying close attention to the news last week. And, if it's emphatic enough, it will be a welcome sign to reformers that the public option will fight another day.
On Wednesday, a number White House officials began whispering to members of the White House press corps that the public option was on its way out--a trial balloon that led George Stephanopoulos to ask, "What is "death with dignity" for the public option?"
Ann Compton inferred that the public option was "gone but not forgotten." Even we noticed that White House Adviser David Axelrod was referring to the public option (and the President's support for it) in the past tense.
In the ensuing days, though, progressives really turned up the heat on the administration, urging Obama to, at the very least, articulate his support for the public option in his speech. Without at least a modest gesture, they argued, the public option would be as good as dead.
Those advocates seem to have gotten their way. Obama will reportedly make a strong, affirmative case for a public option, and dispel certain falsehoods about the sort of government plan that Congress is considering. According to the Wall Street Journal Obama will make the point that the public option he envisions "will not provide a level of subsidies that give it an unfair advantage over private insurers, according to aides familiar with the speech preparations."
The question is, how much wiggle room will he leave for himself. By some accounts, quite a bit. But if he leaves reformers with the impression that his personal commitment to a public option remains strong, they'll be there fighting on its behalf tomorrow, and into next week.

No. And that failure will doom the Democratic Party. This is not 1994 Redux. The Democrats will be all but a memory after 2012.

If the Democrats are a memory then so will this country. The Republican who wins will finish the job GW Bush started.

People have to get their heads around the idea that the public option IS the centrist compromise between the left's desire for single payer and the right's desire for no government involvement. Not that Stephadiculous, Crapper or any of the other Villagers will ever be likely to see things this way. But it's the truth and we've to keep fighting both for the public option and for this framing of the issue.

If all your information on the health care debate came from reading the headlines of TPM articles parsing the use of the words "spirit" and "for the moment" and "is," you will be surprised to hear Obama advocate a position on the public option that's exactly the same as the one he had six months ago!

Even scanning the headlines is enough to give you whiplash.
I really appreciate the reporting work that Eric and Brian are doing. But sometimes I start to wonder if they're not sitting there, thinking up the most incendiary headlines, just to get their readers all riled up and the insults flowing. 'Cause we're pretty predictable. . .

I'm quite certain of it, actually. Remember Eric's twice daily stories during the 2008 campaign reporting that Obama was "clinging" to a slim lead or that the gap was narrowing because one candidate or another's numbers had moved 1 percentage point? I was pretty sure by the end of it that Eric was playing with us just as I'm pretty sure Brian is doing the same thing with Obama's stance on the public option.
Case in point: the headline at the top right now currently reads "Obama to Acknowledge the Potential for Compromise on the Public Option." I'm not sure why it was necessary to say that (again) just a half hour after another post already described Obama's position as "supportive, but not insistent." But it's probably bringing in lots of click-throughs.

He needs to be specific, as in:
With a Public Option, premiums will be AFFORDABLE, and therefore people can actually AFFORD to pay for their own heath care. This is not government paying for everyone's premiums; it is making premiums a real possibility for the millions who want to take care of themselves.
Insurance companies will no longer be able to drop people because they are sick, and if you lose your job, you will still be insured, because your insurance company cannot drop you, or raise your rates just because you got sick or lost your job, or even CHOSE to leave your job. Period.

No tort reform withuot a public option. I think malpractice reform is key in getting a workable health care system in this country...but that and either a single payer or public option system have to walk hand in hand.

Progressives and conservatives, and conservative Dems. It'll be like that Gary Larson cartoon about what dogs hear when we speak.
This is what'll be heard:
"Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah public option blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah public option blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah public option"
Good times.

It's been two or three weeks since the Politico or whoever proclaimed the death of the public option, and I still don't get what's with this talk about the public option being dead. The media may be treating it as dead, but they're not the ones who write the bills. Neither, for that matter, is Obama. Right now the status of the public option is that the CPC is saying they won't let the bill pass without it. Until the enemies of the public option (republican or democrat) find a way around that, the public option lives.

I would like to see him explain exactly what he expects to see in the Bill; generally.
Be supportive of a viable Public Option.
Explain exactly what the PO is relative to the health insurance exchange. What the PO will and will not do relative to competition with private insurance. Why it is essential to holding down costs.
And state he will not sign a reform bill, without a viable public option. That he's not going to simply throw the American People to the wolves of forced individual mandates and fines for not having insurance, without the security and check on the insurance companies a PO would provide.
And that he expects Congress to vote accordingly.
I think that's what we need at this point.
4 out of 5 congressional bills have the PO in them.
So why not push it through?
Because a few Senators say reform with a PO does not have the votes in the Senate? MAKE THEM vote no on cloture.
Then cram it down their a$$es through reconciliation if need be.

Yes, yes. It was all the progressive hand wringing that saved the public option. Bullshit. I'd give money that the White House has been purposely leaking these stories about giving up on the public option knowing full well that Obama was going to come out in support of it in his speech.
Think about it: if they had shown their hand on this when it was announced that Obama was giving a speech on health care reform, we would have spent the last week listening to yet more Republican hysteria. Instead, the hysteria has calmed down (relatively speaking) because Republicans were beginning to think they had a victory in getting rid of the public option.
Of course, I don't know for sure if any of this is true, but I like to think my president and his advisors are crafty sons-a-bitches. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Let's hope for a Hail Mary speech that saves the day for Public Option, a cross between Obama's Rev. Wright lecture and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

I hate to sound all vichy, but honestly "the public option" as a binary yes-no right now really isn't something to get all bunchy about. Research it before you go to the wall for it. It's much more important that pools be as large as possible. With a national mandate, there's no reason that the pools shouldn't be limitless. And a co-op with national scope is probably BETTER than "public option" with state or regional scope. Of course it looks like neither may be in the cards, but do realize, Obama could be playing a binary yes-no public option as a way to "cave" and get something better. You have to allow the possibility.
The insurance companies are counting on us keeping our eye on the wrong ball. It's pretty easy to fool say 60% of the people, even "engaged" progressives, who don't have time to research the issues professionally or watch how the ball is bouncing. Honestly, how many of us were just gratified that it came down to "public option" because it gave us something to hang our hat on without doing any more research. They will keep this shell game going. You can't beat them at it.
I don't like "trusting" politicians. But honestly, I think we've got to exercise some trust here, because this is a case where one wise leader has a greater potential for effectiveness than even an engaged polity. The forces mustered on the other side are enormous. We've underestimated them.
We brought this guy to the white house. He's a good man and-- god help me-- I do trust him. Let's go as strong as we can, then let's back off and let him do his thing.

If Obama is spineless because he can't get the public option thru then so are Presidents Clinton, Carter, LBJ, and Harry Truman. Afterall they all had majorities in congress as well. If it were so easy it would have been done already. Moreover if Fox news had been around during LBJs tenure I am sure he would have gotten alot less accomplished.
