A very, very nervous Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) just spoke with reporters, confirming that his party leadership approached him after his "You lie!" outburst last night, and that he contacted the white House to apologize.
"Well I, uh, last night heard from the leadership that they, uh, wanted me to contact the White House, uh, and state that, uh, my, uh, statements, uh, were inappropriate," said Wilson. "I did, I'm very grateful that the White House, in talking with them, uh, they indicated that they appreciated the call and that we needed to have a civil discussion about the health care issues. And I certainly agree with that."
Wilson then mounted a defense of the substance of his complaint -- insisting that the health care bill would cover illegal immigrants. Non-partisan fact-checkers have disagreed.

This outburst may have a beneficial effect. The MSM let deliberate lies go unchallenged, hiding behind the old "some say that..." dodge (some say that the earth is flat and the moon is made of green cheese). This may force an examination of what's actually true and what's not.
Then again, maybe I'm just giving the MSM too much credit.

You know "basic sanity" can take this debate a long way.

If the debate degenerates to basic sanity and truth, the R's have no chance. And they know it.

Still Crazy After All Those Tears
Joe Wilson Exposes Prez as 'Liar', Wife 'Fair Game'
Reader News (fictional) has learned overnight that Rep. Joe Wilson (Wingnut-SC) was retained by the CIA to hospital ERs 'in or around a US international border that is not Canada' to determine if indeed illegal alien 'Saddam Sanchez and his family sought to acquire $500 worth of medical care from America'.
Mr. Wilson had completed half of a rough draft of his to-be-published op-ed "What I Found in El Paso" but decided shouting "you lie" at the President would be "easier than all that writing stuff."
In further developments, the White House has secretly determined that Wilson's wife, a NOC for the South Carolina Republican Women's Auxiliary is now "fair game."

Oh to have been a fly on the wall to hear Rahm Emmanuel have a word or two with him.
The appropriate answer to Wilson is, of course, to go immediately to:

and fork over whatever your wallet and your whims allow.
...$200,000+ raised just since last night, and counting. For a House race that was close the last time (which is a miracle for SC) that is a fortune. I think Mr. Wilson just made the most expensive little outburst of his career.

It was actually close considering the Dem opponent was an unknown, had no machine backing was outspend 4-to-1 and was a Democrat in South Carolina.

Yeah, an elected Democrat in South Carolina is almost like a freaking unicorn - given that fact, Miller did VERY well last time.
Who knows, though - with all the GOP hijinks this year (Appalachian Trail, anyone?), South Carolina might actually elect a few Dems soon. And Miller having both some coin in his pocket and a newly-besmirched opponent will certainly help his chances next time around.

Beware! Google searches for Rob Miller (Wilson's opponent) will turn up multiple bogus malware sites. Use actblue or navigate through the SC Democratic Party's website. Or just go to RobMillerforCongress.com, which will take you to actblue anyway.

Unfortunately, anybody wanting to have substantive discussions with Republicans on *any* matter will end up disappointed, as the Republicans cannot argue any issue in good faith. Everything, and I do mean *everything* will be viewed through an ideological lens, and if not wingnut-Conservative or Republican, will be attacked or ignored as inconvenient.

I, I don't have a whole lot of, of time. Um, OK, I'm a former employee of Area 51. I, I was let go on a medical discharge about a week ago and, and . . . I, I've kind of been runnin' across the country. Um, um, damn, I don't know where to start. They're, they're gonna, um, they'll triangulate on this position really really soon. OK, um, um, OK, what, what we're thinking of as, as aliens, uh, they're, they're extra-dimensional beings that an earlier precursor of the, um, space program they made contact with. Uh, they, they are not what they claim to be. Uh, they've infiltrated a lot of, uh, about a lot of aspects of, of, of the military establishment, particularly the Area 51. Uh, the, the disasters that are coming, they, the, the military, I'm sorry, the government knows about them. And, and there's a lot of safe areas in this world that they could begin moving the population to now. They are not. They want those major population centers wiped out so that the, the few that are left will be more easily controlled.

Any minute now I expect Wilson's campaign to publish figures on donations HE got since his obscene outburst, and then there will be the obligatory calculation of "Who got more?"
But what no one will be able to put a number to is the amount of goodwill generated for Miller compliments of Joe Wilson and the GOP. Gotta think that number's fairly high, though. I hope Miller sends him a thank-you note and doesn't become a Blue Dog.

The revelations today that Wilson is having financial difficulties provides at least part of the reason why he was tapped by the GOP leadership to heckle the President last night. This will spike his fundraising. Of course it will do so for his opponent as well, but clearly this is a gamble Wilson was willing to take and it's a brilliant move. Already Rush Limbaugh is coming to his defense, imagine how much money that will translate into for Joe.
Given South Carolina's conservative bent, Wilson has a built-in advantage over his opponent and this will galvanize his supporters. Even though he narrowly won last time, he'll win by a larger margin in 2010 because of his outburst last night, which was part of the plan all along. Very Machiavellian move.

It might be interesting if President Obama would invite Rep Wilson to the White House for a beer and a discussion of the facts, followed by a quick press briefing where Rep Wilson is forced to admit his error. I happened to hear on C-Span Radio the hearing he is talking about that wanted to add the provisions on "proving" citizenship before one can have medical treatment. It was truly one of the most un-American proposals I can remember hearing. It was, and I am sure Rep Wilson knows this, also repeatedly pointed out that there is no place in the current proposed legislation changing current law that does not allow U.S. $ to pay for illegal immigrants medical expenses except in a very few very exceptional cases.
As a side note, when a person moves to countries with universal care I believe they are covered on day one of entry into the country. Can anyone clarify this point?

As of 3:00, over $400,000 raised for Rob Miller, Wilson's Democratic opponent. We are heavily amused.
