Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) has set up a new Web site, Names of the Dead, to memorialize Americans who died because they had no health insurance:
Every year, more than 44,000 Americans die simply because have no health insurance.
I have created this project in their memory. I hope that honoring them will help us end this senseless loss of American lives. If you have lost a loved one, please share the story of that loved one with us. Help us ensure that their legacy is a more just America, where every life that can be saved will be saved.
Grayson announced this new Web site on the House floor:
Grayson may be leaving himself open to some online practical jokers. At the moment I write this, four names are memorialized in the site's rotating list:
• Lassie Martin, 10, Kanab, UT
• Norma Jeane Mortenson, 36, Los Angeles, CA
• Steve Rogers, 90, New York, NY
• Wile E. Coyote, 55, Sedona, Arizona
All four of those names are fraudulent. Lassie Martin is the dog "Lassie," whose owners on the 1950's TV show were called the Martins (and the town of Kanab, Utah, was one of the filming locations). Norma Jeane Mortenson was Marilyn Monroe's real name. Steve Rogers is the fictional Captain America from Marvel Comics, and of course there's Wile E. Coyote.
NRCC spokesman Andy Seré released this statement: "What is wrong with this man? Alan Grayson's morbid exploitation of 'the dead' for personal political gain may be the most shameless stunt he's pulled yet. Once again, he's proved himself to be an abject embarrassment to Central Floridians who want more than a circus clown for a congressman."
Late Update: The automated list of names has been removed from the site. It may be that mourning "Hugh G. Reckshinn," age 44, from Dumas, Texas, was a bit too much for them.

Well, he's running a worthwhile experiment. If a liberal can win a slightly Republican district in a tough year by being pugnacious and unapologetic about his liberalism, it's a vindication of everything Kos says. If he loses, however, one wonders whether they'll be willing to draw appropriate lessons.

Oh stop... comparing Grayson and Bachmann is like comparing apples and oranges.
Given that Grayson's statements, while outrageous, have the annoying habit of also being verifiable whereas Bachmann's are just straight out of the Twilight Zone, I don't know where you get the comparison.
And I am kvetching about Harry Reid given I would like a firmer hand at the wheel at the moment.

So he got a couple of names punked in by the whacko right...it remains true that 44,000 Americans die annually because they have no health insurance and it remains true that the GOP is the "Party of NO!" obstructing efforts to help Americans without health care insurance and to help those of us with health care insurance to be able to collect when we need it.
So, have a big laugh, dumbos. I'll bet you've been called that one many times...DUMBOS!!!

I like Grayson, but this was a fairly green sort of mistake to make. Years ago I remember my high school set up employment seminars which allowed students to sign in to attend these on name lists that were publicly posted. "Ben Gay" and "I.B. Toff" were signed in for almost every session.

actually, I'm surprised no one has yet written a book documenting all the deaths that have occurred in this country because folks lacked health care coverage (or were dropped by their insurance company once they got sick or their insurance company simply REFUSED TO PAY FOR A TREATMENT that had been prescribed by a doctor.. just because they didn't want to pay for it..)
I'm also surprised that not ONE of these greedy private insurance companies have ever BEEN PROSECUTED for causing the deaths of so many people just so they could line up their own pockets..

I wouldn't be surprised if Bachmann went on Hannity to decry the "shameless use by Alan Grayson of that patriot, Captain America, and Lassie, American dog patriot, and the poor man with the uncontrollable tumescence, American boner patriot, in his disgusting attempt to smear the heroic insurance companies who have made America what it is today."
She'd have to look up "tumescence" before the show and write it on a big card.

Today I heard people say that the secret new Senate health insurance merged bill will declare teabaggers as having a "pre-existing condition" and unqualified to participate in either a public OR a private plan...guess there doesn't have to be legislation to disqualify teabaggers from private plans, so maybe that part is redundant.

Exactly what does it mean to have a 25% greater chance of death without healh insurance? Is that per year? I mean, let's face it folks, we all have a 100% chance of death insured or not. The question is when and how.
This has been batted around for a while now and I haven't heard it stated any other way and it's been driving me nuts. I feel I must be missing something obvious here. Can anyone straighten me out?

To answer your question:
It means one or more of these are true:
1) you are talking about a different study from Health Insurance and Mortality in U.S. Adults conducted by researchers from the Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School,
2) the person citing these statistics is making them up, or
3) the person citing these statistics has no idea how to deal with statistics.
The Harvard study (pdf file) is an excellent research product. The report, which is published in the current issue of the American Journal of Public Health is detailed, but quite readable.
In short, this study says nothing about specific individual risk. Rather, it discusses the impact of insurance on mortality across the U.S. population on an ANNUAL basis. (Although it looks at a population that was first identified and characterized in 1988, it is not a longitudinal study, so they cannot track whether the individuals gained or lost insurance coverage in the 20 years covered by the research. Therefore, it is a point-of-interview analysis, which means annualized data.
The researchers do discuss the application to individuals in the study limitations section and they also cite several studies that looked at this specific issue. Those citations are in the linked article, so you can look them up if you wish.
One thing that can be concluded: not having health insurance at any point during the ages 18-64 means your long-term health is more at risk. They also indicate that even for those who do have insurance, the out-of-pocket expenses have a negative impacts on mortality. Specifically, the Harvard researchers point out that other well-documented studies have found:
1) if you are uninsured at one point in the 18-64 age group, you are more likely to become uninsured again,
2) intermittent insurance coverage is common and accelerates the decline in health among middle-aged persons (ages 35-55),
3) among the near-elderly (ages 55-65), being uninsured at any point in time was associated with significant decline in overall health relative to those with private insurance,
4) regarding cost sharing (out-of-pocket expenses) among the insured, studies show that cost sharing worsened blood pressure control, and was associated with decreased use of essential medications and increased rates of emergency department use and adverse events, and
5) alternative measures of access to medical care for the uninsured, such as community health centers, do not provide the protection of private health insurance.
This is probably more than you wanted to know, but there is a lot more important information in the Harvard study than we are seeing reported. For example, the study notes a significant increase in the RATE of mortality in the past 20 years. They calculated the deaths among Americans aged 25 to 64 years associated with lack of health insurance and found that from 2000 to 2005 the number of people dying from lack of insurance increased by more than 140%.
Although they offer no speculation as to the reason for this horrendous increase (they controlled very tightly for more than a dozen variables) I suspect it could be due to the increased rate at which insurance companies are finding ways to deny coverage and dropping customers when they become sick. And, since that has increased dramatically since 2005, the obvious conclusion is that the actual number of people dying annually due to lack of insurance is probably greater than the 44789 deaths calculated for the 2005 data set.

We have already sent out a response to the Honorable Mr. Grayson with our own website:
www.namesoftheliving.com
We contacted the RNC in FL and they sent it out on twitter. So far, response has been tremendous, although we need more stories!
By the way, my submission on Mickey Mouse's untimely demise did get posted and I got thanked for it by Alan Grayson.
