Alan Grayson's New Pitch: 'The Invention of Truth-Telling'

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) has rolled out a funny picture in a campaign fundraising e-mail, seemingly made for viral campaign tactics -- that his presence in Washington is "The Invention of Truth-Telling."

The poster is a takeoff on the new movie The Invention of Lying set in an alternate reality where people only tell the truth, and one man discovered how to lie and uses it for his personal benefit. Grayson, then, would view himself as living in a world where people only lie, and he is the one man who has discovered honesty -- and yes, he is using it for his personal benefit.

NRCC spokesman Andy Seré gave this comment to the St. Petersburg Times: "'Narcissistic personality disorder' comes to mind. So does 'one-term congressman.' This circus act is getting tiresome."

LOL!!! I love it, I love it. The NRCC is just envious. They know that's an excellent ad.

Yes, Grayson reminds me of the Bruno Gianelli character in West Wing, who once told his White House colleagues that he was tired of working with Dems who would curl up in the fetal position when attacked by Republicans and whimper "Don't -- hurt -- me." This guy is not scared of their bully talk, they know it, and they are scared.

There is also the implicit suggestion that the congressional dems are also incapable of telling the truth. While there is some hyperbole in there, I'm sure a lot of pols feel it hits a little close to home.

What Grayson hit on was a reduction of the GOP's position to something which is very simple, easy to capture in a sound bite or sentence fragment and, while reductionist, essentially true. The ability to do this (with a de-emphasis on the "true" part) has been the core of the GOPs success over the last decade (presumably longer, but I haven't been paying attention that long). And so in a DC sort of way, Grayson really has invented honesty (if you can ignore the fact that Barney Frank has been doing this sort of thing nonstop and on his feet for a couple decades now).

So the question arises, why is the combination of two such successful strategies (honesty and simplicity) so rarely used on the left? There are two obvious answers I see. The first is that dems, like the GOP, have their share of hidden agendas which do not hold up well to honest understanding. The second is that this version of snarky, low-brow debate is viewed as being unprofessional. Both viewpoints lead to a disdain for Grayson's approach (especially now that he's being so self-congratulatory about it and in all honesty, he could probably stand to really study Frank's elevation of the honest comedic snark to art form).

i was re-reading a few of matt taibbi's articles recently, and came across this, from an april 2009 article about the AIG bailout (and the events that led to it):

Stevens isn't the only person in Congress to be given the finger by the Fed. In January, when Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida asked Federal Reserve vice chairman Donald Kohn where all the money went — only $1.2 trillion had vanished by then — Kohn gave Grayson a classic eye roll, saying he would be "very hesitant" to name names because it might discourage banks from taking the money.

"Has that ever happened?" Grayson asked. "Have people ever said, 'We will not take your $100 billion because people will find out about it?'"

"Well, we said we would not publish the names of the borrowers, so we have no test of that," Kohn answered, visibly annoyed with Grayson's meddling.

Grayson pressed on, demanding to know on what terms the Fed was lending the money. Presumably it was buying assets and making loans, but no one knew how it was pricing those assets — in other words, no one knew what kind of deal it was striking on behalf of taxpayers. So when Grayson asked if the purchased assets were "marked to market" — a methodology that assigns a concrete value to assets, based on the market rate on the day they are traded — Kohn answered, mysteriously, "The ones that have market values are marked to market." The implication was that the Fed was purchasing derivatives like credit swaps or other instruments that were basically impossible to value objectively — paying real money for God knows what.

"Well, how much of them don't have market values?" asked Grayson. "How much of them are worthless?"

"None are worthless," Kohn snapped.

"Then why don't you mark them to market?" Grayson demanded.

"Well," Kohn sighed, "we are marking the ones to market that have market values."

i guess he probably WILL be a one-term congressman. way too smart and cares way too much.

anyway, here's the link to the whole taibbi article: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/26793903/the_big_takeover/print

This guy is a powerhouse. I didn't realize he'd taken on the shortcomings in bailout oversight -- in addition to reworking the anti-Acorn bill so it applies to KBR, Blackwater/Xe, etc. and to confronting the Republicans on their lack of any health care plan.
Grayson and Wiener are 2 congressman I can really respect!

What does? The idea of an actual progressive president, as opposed to a centrist?

The propping up of Dems who SAY what you are feeling, only to tear them down and cry betrayal when they do just ONE thing that doesn't match completely with the Progressive agenda.

You guys give it up too easily.

And what does "NRCC spokesman Andy Seré" think of Michelle Bachmann's "antics"? That they are an example of reasoned and reasonable debate

Seré deserves to be ignored and Grayson supported.

Okay, all of his personality is well and good, but whatever PR firm put the okay stamp on this needs to put an "out of business" sign in the window. Its just that much easier to blow him off to the idependant voter and Repubs. Good guy, bad poster!

Remember, when a shill like Sere from the NRCC says something is "tiresome", that simply means "It's hurting us, and we don't know how to respond to it in a way that makes us look good. Please make it stop."

Hooray for Alan Grayson!
